Sections, folds, slices.... how do you refer to a 'piece' of hay?

I've always been told a 'section' of hay, from a bale that averages 10/12 sections.. I've notice some of you calling them folds.. so guys, what is the correct term for a section of hay?

I call it a slice - but now on round bales so dont call it any thing!!!

I'm sure some "helpful" person could point out the differences and history and argue a slice is the wrong term.

Is it a regional thing? For years and years I never heard anyone call them anything apart from a section but then I moved away from home and I hear them called all sorts of random names now

A slice to me is when your referring to a small bale and a fold is when referring to a large bale.

Use to call it cakes where I grew up in Devon but since moving to London/Herts I use slice or section as no one knows what I am talking about.

I call it a section, but someone I know calls it a biscuit which I just can't get my head around because its not circular and covered in chocolate

Call it a section now when using a small bale, a slice when using a big bale.
In the past, I used to call it a 'biscuit'... as my gran did, and I copied her!

I've just realised I think I say leaves when it relates to straw though and I dont know why. That's odd.

I call them a leaf or leaves of hay too - but i am born and bred Brummie. I must have picked it up from somewhere.

I've always called it a clat, I've heard various other things, but this is what mum and dad always called it (North Devon and I'm 31) But then North Devon sometimes seems to have a language all it's own. take a chiggy pig (chickie pig/ chuckie pig) for example, nobody other than those who are local to my area has a clue!
