Sections, folds, slices.... how do you refer to a 'piece' of hay?

Wedge for me! I'm 31 and come from Hertfordshire. Moved 30 miles up the road to Bedfordshire & no-one knew what i meant-they all call them sections!

How long is a piece of string?! :p
Exactly!

Here we call them "slices" but there is nothing written in stone. In fact, there is no such actual measurement, as a "slice" can vary in size according to the machinery which makes the bale. Whenever I get a new batch I weigh a couple of slices then I know how much I'm feeding. I have a little brass spring balance that I can hold in my hand or hang from a hook above the feed room door frame.

Sections or slices but as a kid when I worked at a RS and later as a livery on the same yard they were known as biscuits!

Maybe its a southern thing then as I'm from sussex and YO's when I was a kid on the 'biscuit' yard were from Hampshire?

Perhaps it's a Southern thing - 50 odd years ago when I learnt to ride it was always referred to as a biscuit and I lived in Southampton then!

I leant to ride in the Portsmouth/Fareham areas over 40 years ago and never heard it called anything but a slice, pack or section. How odd :D

Where I'm from. . . .

Small bales - always 'flake'.
Large bales - can also be 'flake' but more likely 'section' or 'slice' if a large square section is folded and broken into 4 those pieces are similar in size to small square bale flakes so called flakes by some.

'Fork full' is used when you're pitching it with a fork (obviously:)) Not a standard size but again, often about the size of a small bale flake.

Firstly...."flaps" made me snigger :-)

Secondly, "rashers" so soon after seeing "flaps" made me really snigger and I am wondering if anyone else sees the humour in that, as wrong as it is:D

Born and bred in South Wales and they were always referred to as "waifs" there. I still call it a waif of hay, but if I am around people here in Wiltshire calling them sections, I join in :-)

Thanks OP for the unintentional humour delivered in this thread :D:D:D
