Yesterday I was out hacking on a green four year old in full flourescents with someone walking beside me. I felt her tense up and then heard horses hooves coming fast towards us. They appeared around the corner in trot - one riding and leading another with a rider on the led horse too. I expected them to slow down and ask to pass but instead they continued to trot very fast calling out that they couldn't stop as their horse was further along in the breaking in process than mine!!!!

I wouldn't dream of trotting past another rider on a lane and surely if she could recognise that my horse was newly backed then that was even more reason for her to slow down!

Not much point in this post just felt quite cross and feel like that kind of behaviour can lead to accidents.

Rude! Rude! Rude!!

I was in a similar situation a few weeks ago, riding one of our newly backed girls and two women came quite literally hooning towards and then past me and a pretty speedy canter, forcing my poor girl up onto a bank, thankfully she has a very sane brain, took it all in her stride and simply plodded on!!

I have passed several people like this, idiots

On one occasion it was the chairwoman of a local riding club so she should know better. She was out with a friend, I was on my own and she came past at a stonking pace. Luckily my girl is fine with things like that but doesn't mean the next horse will be
It was a narrow lane, she almost clipped my stirrups. Can't miss a 17hh decked in hi viz yellow :(

Appalling. I've experienced this in the village we stable with riders from another livery yard approaching us in trot and continuing to pass us in trot. I've told them politely (but firmly I hope!) that this is completely unacceptable behaviour. I have to say if someone passed me going in the same direction in trot, I would be shouting loudly!!

..... but instead they continued to trot very fast calling out that they couldn't stop as their horse was further along in the breaking in process than mine!!!! ....

Huh? How does that work then?:rolleyes: That's like saying it's ok for a learner driver to plough through pedestrians on a zebra crossing because they're still getting the hang of the brakes!

How rude:mad:

That is very rude and not horsemanship and would of probably given someone a mouthful if they did the same to her. I always ask to trot past another horse and automatically slow down if a horse is coming either way. Its just etticate. (sp)

I had an idiot do this to me when I was at work. I had an excitable but generally sane horse out hacking and I had him out on his own. We were headed for home and he was just jig jogging, not being silly just had ants in his pants and this girl comes trotting down the road full pelt and straight past me at the speed of light. That set my horse off and we cantered sideways the rest of the way home - luckily only 200m - but the last thing you want a horse that is prone to bleeding to be doing! She said not a word to me as she approached, went past or carried on.

She got her come uppance a week later. I had turned horses out in the field and as I was about to go and bring them in they went over to the fence to talk to this pony as she walked along the lane. The pony stopped and refused to move. I jogged across the field as I did not want the racehorses touching noses with a random pony and asked her politely to move on. She couldn't. The pony wouldn't move, it stood stock still and took whatever she threw at it - which was a lot! As I led my guys back across the field I turned to see if she had left and saw the pony turn smartly around and launch into a full speed trot. I swear she had no control of it! It just looked as the pony had got bored and was heading home regardless of what the rider wanted. I haven't seen her again thankfully!

It is very rude i had this once and my horse went nuts trying to take off after it but on this occasion the other rider didn't say a word just went trotting full pelt past me

Rude, rude, rude, probably the same kind of people who don't thank drivers for slowing down for them on their horses, or drive past you without thanking you when you have just squashed your car into a tiny space between parked cars so that they can have right of way, grrrrrrrr!! :)

That happened to me and my ex-pacer, just barged past no "excuse me" or sorry or anything, so.......I did the same to them!!! Kicked my lad into full on pace mode and flashed past them do as you likey style, while saying "I'm sorry but you set him off and I just can't hold him"!!!!!!!while her horse had a breakdown....well tough ******, she should learn some manners!

They have never, ever done that to me again, they will now either go the other way, or wait and pass sensibly!!

Yeah...we've got Medium Trot Lady in our woods. Being passed by her tends to cause pony to bounce the rest of the way home! Very annoying!

One place it's ok to trot past other riders is on an endurance ride...but even there, you're supposed to call out to make sure it's ok first!

If you meet them again turn your horse side ways to block the lane if you can, otherwise turn to face them and explain you have a young horse which you are teaching good manners.

That sounds like a very good idea - very diplomatic!

Thanks for all your replies I've thought of plenty I could have said to her now but at the time I was lost for words and trying to help my nag stay calm! Luckily she didn't stay het up for too long!

Brilliant - I would have loved to do that!! Reminds me of getting caught riding in fields when I was little and used to pretend I couldn't stop!

How selfish
They could have caused a nasty accident.

I always slow down to pass other horses.
Even myolder boy who is totally safe sometimes gets excited/panicky when he seens other horses.

I feel for you, as this exact same thing happend to me, and I got a mouth full of abuse ! Apparently I have no right to use the bridleways ! I quite often come across riders from the local riding school that are VERY rude and inconsiderate when I am riding my boy. It ruins a nice afternoon and upsets Mr Ned.

That is so rude and completely selfish - I bet they'd be the first to complain if something similar happened to them the other way round.

What is it with people these days - manners cost nothing

Agree it's bad behaviour. Depressingly, just another example of the creeping ignorance/selfishness of other folk, in general.
;)

:):):) Like!

Bad manners, if she was shouting " sorry she wont stop " Help!!
Now that I could understand, I always slow to a walk if any riders are near and ask if its ok to speed up after I pass them. Dont mind in the least if they say no,can you wait till we are out of sight.

Blimey, I can't say I've ever encountered anyone like that out hacking, I must be very lucky! :D

If a car is coming down the road too fast, my horse is quite easy to make look scary... a wild eyed tb leaping about in the road usually makes them give us a wide birth! :D (He's good as gold to be honest!)
