It’s a very small yard only me and one other livery but I will invest in equipment

A cheap rasp is a handy thing to have as well as it can be used to rasp off the clenches if you can’t lift them (it’s not the ideal way to remove a shoe and makes me cringe if a farrier doesn’t it, but in an emergency…)

I hope this was a good outcome.

For anyone reading that it might be useful, vets can pull shoes if you are unable to attend to it yourself/ cannot get your farrier in an emergency.

That would be a very expensive way of removing a shoe! Surely no vet would come out purely to do that. Really not their job.

I've had to remove the odd shoe in an emergency and a loose/wonky/hanging off shoe can do so much damage so I agree its something anyone with a shod horse should be prepared to do - worth watching how your farrier does it and getting some basic tools. My TB used to loosen/dislodge shoes on a very regular basis (which is why we went barefoot in the end!) but I still have the tools just in case (there are shod horses on our yard too).

I’m referring to a real emergency situation where there is significant risk of damage to the foot, ie nails gone into the frog.
yeah i helped a friend remove a shoe a few years ago as i have tools, if we hadnt been able to do it, it would have been an emergency job because the horse couldn't stand without further puncturing his foot on the nails, had he done that then you are into very expensive vet bill territory anyway!!

Yes. I had had to have vet out as the shoe had twisted sideways with the toe clip in the sole of the foot. And he was on three legs. He removed the shoe. And although expensive trip. Better than a punctured sole
