Should dogs be banned from Badminton

Well if the worst did happen that's what dog insurance with public liability is for ;)

I'll be taking my dog to Bramham for the first time this year, he'll be wearing a gentle leader along with a harness with two leads as a belt and braces approach, he's a big strong dog and I want control, and options if one fails, no flexi lead either (i dont think they make one robust enough anyway lol) I've no doubt he'll love it as he loves people, dogs, and hoovering food whenever he can

I won't take him if its Sahara hot or peeing down, and my oh can stop by and pick him up if he gets tired/fed up at any point, benefit of being a local :)

how many people have dog insurance though?? You might find not many. My 4 king charles spaniels werent insured, my Gordon setter was as he was a show dog and also one heck of big strong boy who could pull me off my feet and I wasnt exactly light when we had him ;) I wouldnt have dared take him to a horse event as any lead can fail and anything can make them decide to go.

If I needed to take all those precautions just to take my dog to an event that your mentioning above id be seriously having second thoughts about taking him. Big strong dog or not anything could happen, you could trip over something/someone and let go and bang hes off. Better to just leave him at home IMO but your dog and your insurance.

Actually as an aside I wonder how insurance companies would view that considering you had chosen to take the dog to such an event, would they cover any damage done??? Just a thought :)

Yes should be banned but as much for dogs welfare, it must be miserable for them, massive crowds and other dogs, very hot (I don't see many owners carrying water bowls for them), boring as they can't be let off for a run and a very long day even if they live round the corner and only been in the car 30 mins.

If you were a dog would you rather be there or at home?

I do think they should :( Despite the fact that I take my dog out to smaller events and she loves walking courses and she finds horses the most boring thing in the world.

Most dog owners at these events are responsible but so many seem to just park at a jump and sit there all day with a very bored dog.

And I really really don't understand why anyone would take a dog to a big horsey event if the dog isn't horse proof. I understand they all get excited and no animal is 100% predictable but some of these dogs are barking and lunging at every single horse?!

If you or your horse has been badly injured or even if it just scuppered your chances of a win money from someone's insurance isn't going to be much comfort. Too little too late.

Everyone I know insures their dogs....

My dog certainly would prefer to be with me. He's not a fan of home alone. If he didn't like shows I wouldn't go if I couldn't get someone to be with him

I have never been to badminton, but have been to county shows and hickstead and he's loved it as he gets a lot of fuss. And I always carry water with me for him.

I wouldn't take a little dog though. I cringed at small dogs at the nf show at how often they were nearly trodden on!!!

My dog is not uncontrollable, the two leads will be a just in case, not something I plan on coming into play hopefully! He's certainly not yappy, used to horses and generally pretty awesome. He's been to events before, just not Bramham :)

I think the fact that dogs aren't banned from events, and my dog will be on a lead, plus the fact my insurance has no exclusions for attending public events they wouldn't have a leg to stand on should the worst happen, which it won't! And collapsible waterbowl will be packed as usual.

personally my dog would be far more interested if it was sheep or rabbits going over the fences! :o

And for my dog, he would rather be wherever I am tbh, not left at home :)

I have three dogs and love dogs, I take them everywhere with me but why can't people just leave them at home at a big event like this..!

Is it really required to take your dog along.??

Yes they should be banned before they cause a accident.

No because people would still pitch up with their dog in tow and end up leaving them in the car because they aren't allowed in. I think what would be better is banning flexi-leads. They are far too easy to drop and could be very dangerous. At least with a normal lead you can wrap it round your wrist. Perhaps some kind of 'policing' at the entry gates and a verbal warning on entry about controlling the dog and that loose dogs incur a charitable donation of at least £x? I was fence judging at Burgie one year and this lady dropped the leads of her 2 Labs so they could say hello to someone. I went mental at her and she seemed to think it was no big deal?? I was up at the massive Trakehner.

I once took the collie to Blair and whilst he had a fun day (we kept moving most of the time) he was a pain at the trade stands!! I'd never take a dog again. I had my very sturdy (for the huskies) dog walking belt on so even if I fell over he wouldn't have gotten loose. The little yappy dogs at the sides are REALLY annoying as well. I doubt the horses notice though, there's a lot of crowd noise and tannoys etc. Most are probably well used to them.

Just to add,Bramham isn't half as busy as badminton, most of the course there is plenty of space. Would I take my dog to badminton, no, not unless I was competing (so that's a never then!) it looks way too busy for me let alone a dog so maybe i wouldn't enjoy it either, I don't like too many people. :p

Fwiw when dogs do find their way to the secretary tent, owners are made to pay a fine/donation to pick them up, not happened to me but I've heard it on the PA plenty of times, usually a terrier lol :)

I couldn't not insure my dog, his breeding makes it more likely to have issues later on - despite being a dirty mongrel! - plus he's proven to be pretty accident prone!!

It would be a shame to ban all dogs just because one or two owners can't keep their dogs under control. Problem is how do you identify those owners until dog is loose - not an easy decision although, I can see a few spoiling it for all dog owners.

Yes.....today is a warm day, the dogs all shown on tv look fed up and bored.
So far TWO dogs have managed to get loose and cause a hazzard on the course.
It is an event for horses....not a dog agility course, and given the time, effort and money involved in getting a horse to 4* its utterly bonkers that a dog should be able to cause an accident that could end both horse and riders career should a nasty accident happen.

Well said.

Its not appropriate to take a horse to crufts even if you think it'd be well behaved, have a lovely time, you've no one at home to look after it and it would spoil your day if it couldn't come with you. All tough luck for you since your horse would be nothing but a potential hazard and PITA to people there for the point of the competition - dogs. I like dogs, I've got one but I can't see the point of them at Badminton.

I don't insure my dogs but do have third party insurance - not as people seem to think in case they bite anyone but in case they cause an accident if they were to escape.

Surely events could demand to see proof of third party insurance for any dogs attending but TBH I see no reason to take a dog along.

Or worse, life :(

Absolutely, they are currently barking on tv and setting our springers off... Can't hear the damn commentary!

Only joking, no.

As the title say's really after seeing another dog on course that could have caused a nasty accident with the dog lead!!

What are every body's thought's..

This was a thread last year!! And YES I do think dogs should be banned from events such as badminton....and screaming children while we are at it!!

Of course they should. Can't believe they are still allowed!

Saw two dogs fighting this year, someone tread in their poo, several loose ones, one get in the way of a tractor...

I don't blame the dogs.

Great comfort should said dog maim or kill someone. Insurance is great, but the loss of a top horse, or worse still a rider....no amount of money will make up for that.

Mine was a response to another post 'what would you do if you were sued' you can be sued for many things, that's what liability insurance is in place for. People are at risk from my dog by death by licking.

Maybe ban people and have a moving wire going round the course you can attach your dogs too for a walk around the course, like the wake board ones if you're familiar :p :)

Qhy does it always take a "nasty accident" for anything to be done in this country.

Why does Health & Safety seem to turn a blind eye to equestrian events?

All I can hear on tv is bloomin dogs! Leave the damned things at home!

They should havekept the racing on! No dogs anywhere near those magnificent beasts!
