Silicone on your breeches/jodhpurs? Does it help?

I can't decide if silicone patches actually help you stay on. I've fallen off plenty of times in both silicone and non-silicone jods, what are people's thoughts?

I need some new jods and can't decide if the silicone actually helps when riding a spooky horse.
 
We were talking about this at work recently. My friend said she needed full seat silicon to stay on! (She rides racehorses, pretty sure there’s more to it than her breeches ?)
I laughed at this and my theory is if your coming off your coming off, a sticky seat won’t save you.
However.... after buying some new super sticky full seat breeches and wearing them to ride I did actually feel a bit slidey going back to my normal ones today ? maybe there is something in it!
 
I can't say I've ever noticed a difference, but my horse isn't exactly one to make you need a sticky bum! About the worst she ever does is a little bit of Riverdance - feet do a tapdance while her body stays completely still.
 
I don’t like the super sticky ones but I do like a little bit of stick on the spooky monster who likes to try and send me out the side door! I don’t think they’d help with bucking or bolting (Not really tested this yet!) but I do feel they help when he shoots to the side
 
I'd never tried them until a couple of weeks ago and now I can't go back! They've definitely helped me keep my seat in a few hairy situations but I think they help me keep my position nice too.
 
I generally ride in either high end breeches mostly with suede seats, but I've a couple that are silicon, or cheap running tights with no seat. Seat helps but it's not going to work miracles. I've got a fab pair of pikeur ones that are grippy without being sticky that are great for jumping in
 
One thing I will mention is that silicone knee patches are terrible - I’ve got some old style arion ones and they really rub (to the point of taking the skin off!) if I tense my knee at all! On the plus side they do make me consciously think about not tensing my knees!

That's my kind of horse!

But yes, I wear stickybum breeches, I can't do with sliding around in the saddle.
 
I’ve not noticed a difference and I find my silicon breeches ride up , it’s not the silicons fault though they are not tight enough at the bottom . I do have a gel out pad though so maybe this is why I do not notice the difference in wearing them or not .
 
I definitely prefer them and have noticed a difference. These days, the only non-silicone ones I’ll wear are Decathlon Kipwarm ones, which are rubbery and slightly grippy. I’ll only bother with full seat ones, though; I honestly can’t see the point of the ones with just knee patches. My first pair of riding tights had silicone knee patches, but I don’t think they did much, as it was my bum that needed the stickiness, not my knees!
 
I didn’t notice a massive difference at first (or so I thought) but when I rode in non silicone ones one day on my spooky 4 year old I definitely felt more slidey!
So now I only ride in silicone ones, after being a sceptic originally.

Ive tried lots but I prefer the Eqcouture ones.

I don't like feeling stuck to the saddle or anything sticky. They also stick to the leather seats in my car. I hate the way they feel when posting. I do like that they are less material compared to some of the suede seat ones, so they can feel cooler in the warmer weather. I just wear the ones I have for hacking since we do a lot of walking or some cantering (so no posting trot, really). I've tried a few styles and patterns.

It's actually becoming difficult to find good quality full seats that aren't silicone. The ones I do have are mostly Pikeur.

If I'm going to fall off, I don't know if silicone will save me, tbh. But if it makes some feel more secure, than why not I suppose.

Me too, not a big fan of sticky seats. I like to be able to move in the saddle. :)

There was a top class German rider who actually decried all sticky bum breeches/jods on the basis that it prevented a rider being able to make the tiny (or bigger) adjustments needed in their seat. Also that if they became unlevel in their seat it prevented them naturally re balancing, i.e. fixing them in the wrong position rather than keeping them in the right position!!
I think all those bubbles and blotches on ones bum and thighs are horrid! At least the manufacturers seem to have given up on all the bling now.
 
I love my gel sticky bum riding tights. My WB does 180 degree spook spins on a regular basis and I do think it helps. Anything that gives a little edge is helpful in my book.
 
Don't like them. Don't like being glued to the saddle. I prefer fabric that has some slip resistance, but need to be able to move freely. Did once ride in some running tights which was fun, my saddle was beautifully polished but was incredibly slippery.
I have a suspicion that the new trend for stretchy riding tights is a cheap way to manufacture breeches and slapping silicone on the bum and knees is to stop people being hurled out of the saddle.

Yeah, I think that is part of it for me, not being able to make adjustments or reposition. Especially in dressage work, which is our main endeavor.

I was wearing a newer pair of suede full seats in a riding lesson where I got quite sweaty due to the heat, I felt so stuck everywhere, I hate that feeling and to me, that is what silicone breeches are like.

My horse can do some moves and/or teleport, but I'm still not tempted to have a more sticky bum.
 
I find they have damaged my new saddle as they were a bit aggressive with the silicon.

Also concerned about their ability to break down in landfill in the future. Will the silicon still be intact long after the fabric has broken down?
 
I do think some people think they glue you to the saddle. They most certainly do not. It’s perfectly easy to adjust your seat all it does is provide a small amount of resistance. You shouldn’t be sliding all over your saddle constantly readjusting in any case just changing your weight distribution to give aids to the horse. They also lose the initial stickiness after being worn a few times. The old faux suede seats often don’t stretch enough and you can end up with them pulling on the knee and not being able to fully sit. I’d never willingly go back to them.
 
I didn't think they did much, until I rode in an old pair without any sort of grip and felt like I was sliding all over! I do prefer a suede seat rather than silicone though.

I don't think that they glue you to the saddle, but they do give you some extra "stick" I am also not sliding all over my saddle and constantly readjusting, that is not what people are referring to. It just has a different feel and stick that I, and others, are simply not comfortable with. It does not mean that we are all over the place in the saddle.

I have worn and washed a few pairs, and they seem to have retained their stickiness, I was hopeful that they would wear out more. Like I said, I am open to them as I do find them cooler, but just have not liked to thus far. I have no problems with pulling on the knee and not being able to sit in a good quality pair of suede full seats that fit correctly. If they are too small or don't fit right, sure, I have a pair that does that.

I only wear sticky breeches if I’m doing XC/ sponsored rides. I’m adamant that I would have eaten dirt the other day if I hadn’t got my sticky bums on! Honestly not sure how I stayed ? my life flashed before my eyes

This is how I feel tbh dont like them for everday riding. Never wear them for hacking (or snything where I have beige jods-I have no silcone beige!) But I do wear a 'special/lucky' pair ? for jumping lesson or xc, where the grippyness makes me feel a bit more secure for hairy moments! I think I notice the benefit more because I normally don't ride in them, feels like Im wedged into the saddle and going no where ?
