A post below about a new hat hurting got me thinking - several posters comented on the fact that hat shapes are different, as well as sizes, with traditionals tending to be a bit longer and thinner and skull caps a bit more rounded.

I have always had traditional peaked caps as skull caps have always given me a headache but I need a cap without a peak if I want to do hunter trials next year.

Are their any hats/skull caps without peaks that are more of a traditional peaked shape rather than the rounded skull cap shape?

If not I think I may not do any hunter trials - there is nothing worse than a uncomfortable hat. I know the no peak rule is for safely reasons and I respect that totally, I just CAN'T find a skull cap that doesn't pinch, no matter what size or make. I think if I had to wear an uncomfortable hat, even just for half an hour or so, I would be much more likely to fall off as instead of concentrating on the horse and the course, I would be concentrating on my head! Maybe i'll just stick to hunting, where peaked is much more common anyway!

I had a normal skull cap which gave me a headache so got a champion ventair (with peak) there definetly worth a try as come in skull cap variety in some fab colours as well. I also find the Dublin Onyx is shaped more like a the peaked hats and has a detachable peak which is useful

I think it may have more to do with the make of the hat than whether it is a skull or peaked hat. They are all slightly different - just as well, as we all have different shaped heads

I can only wear Champion hats, and find their velvet and skull caps are the same shape. I tried some Charles Owen hats, but they are a totally different shape, regardless of whether peaked or not.

What make is your peaked hat? I would start off by trying on a skull cap in the same make.

It's Charles Owen - I have tried a Charles Owen skull cap, but nope, on come the headaches!
I do want to try a Dublin Onyx as I have heard good things about them, but nowhere around me stocks them and I don't want to buy on the internet without trying on in person first.

hmm, that's weird! Have you tried a few different styles in the CO? When I bought a new hat recently I wanted a Champion ventair, but although it fitted OK I preferred a different style. The fitter told me that they do all feel different.

IMO you can't beat trying them on with a qualified fitter.
The skull variety and the peak of the Champion Ventair are definitely different shapes. I can't get a 6 5/8 peaked on properly, it won't go down on my head yet the 6 3/4 is too big, whereas the skull fits fine and is ultra comfortable - but the shop only had the sickly pink one and I think I'd prefer black.

I had a similar issue & after trying on everything in the local 3 saddlery shops I tried the Gatehouse junior style.

Yes it's a kids fitting (no VAT), but it's the best I've got. It has no holes, so I have terrible hat hair after, but at least I can do XC.

BTW, why dont they also fixed peaks for XC? I'd rather be wearing a level 3 body protector (the local just asks for a body protector) & a modern hat which conforms to everything. -Does the peak really make a difference in modern hats?
