I really hope that is not Shy. I was unconvinced at the time but she felt it was for the best and was having such a tough time. She really believed he had found a forever home with a wonderful person. At least the rescue people sound as if they are trying to sort something and they seem to have an idea of what they are doing.

Shy is freeze marked LV 67 on his near side flank, which can be seen from pics of him Shysmum has posted previously on the forum.

The emaciated horse is not freeze marked in the same place, if at all. It’s some poor beggar, though.

ETA Crikey, it sounds like just the same place though, doesn't it 😳.

None of the horses in the photos of the 10 surviving horses is Shy but one was put down last week and there is no photo of that one. That's the one which is really worrying, as Shysmum needs it not to be him or she will never stop wondering about how he ended his life. Let's cross every finger it's not the right place but it does sound horribly like it is.

are you sure it's not the one on the right in the middle row?
He looks a lot like Shy and the freeze marking might not show through the winter coat.

I can't match the markings on any of them to Shy, I've been through them with a fine tooth comb, hoping he is OK because of how devastating it will be for Shysmum if he's not. The black on the stifle ends too high up on that one. I don't think he's there 😞

Just a thought - has anybody messaged Shysmum on here? I know she hasn’t been on in a while but maybe she has her email notifications on for private messages? I know somebody messaged on Facebook, but unless friends it might go into “other messages” so not seen quickly

I don't think they'd be OK with giving out that sort of information from a random request. If Shysmum contacted them I'm sure they would be able to confirm whether or not it's the same person.
Sorry, I didn’t mean for you to pry, that wouldn’t be right. More whether it’s been reported in your local papers or social media, so maybe the name is public knowledge.

Might be easier to just message the rescue and ask if any of the horses have a freeze brand matching Shy's. I'm sure they could then check with whoever was caring for them previously regarding the already deceased horse.

No one was really caring about them. The owner died 2 months ago and the neighbors were feeding them the hay that was left. The lady's son lives abroad and he has wished the horses to be rehomed through the charity instead of being sold. The charity will retain ownership to ensure the horses well being. They already have a lot of offers of homes as colored cobs are very sought after in France.

Since Shysmum has been contacted and it doesn't even look like Shy is one of the horses, I think it is best to let it rest now.

I would regard feeding hay in the wake of the owner's death and then engaging with the rescue to have the horses removed as caring for. I also didn't see any confirmation of Shysmum having already been contacted when I posted my comment. I still don't.

(As an aside, can we please stop with this frankly stupid fashion for declaring a topic ended? It's really starting to grate! Just be a normal forum user and don't post on a thread if you feel that it's done.)

I only replied because I didn't know if you understood French, the horses haven't received any farriery or veterinary care, resulting in 1, potentially 2 being PTS. That's why I said they haven't been cared for.

A poster has contacted Shysmum through Facebook, they've said it upthread.

I didn't declare anything ended, just gave my opinion. But now wish I hadn't posted in the first place about the rescue. I did hesitate as I knew it had the potential to stir drama, but I thought if it could have been my old horse I would have wanted to know asap.
