I have read the posts and although it is a bit difficult to understand it very definitely isn't text speak. The posts were a bit mean and unnecessary but at the same time I would definitely say that if she had said that she was Dyslexic nobody would have said what they did.

On the other hand I have Dyspraxia (balance and coordination difficulties and other stuff) so I understand that it is difficult to say that you have a disability openly straight away so people shouldn't assume that it's easy to tell strangers.

Haven't reall all the replies in this thread, but do know about the threads you mean.
I found roly's writing a bit difficult to work out, and passed it off as text/abbreviated writing. I did not know that they are dyslexic, as I'm sure many others did know know either.
Maybe instead of 'having a go' you could have politely informed people as to why the language was s bad.
That's my opinion anyway..

ETA- That was to lilym by the way, not the person above me!

ok here goes

I,m literate well educated and I have often posted on here , english is my thing and I enjoy the diversity of this forum , its varied posts , its helpfulness .........but , my husband is well educated , an accomplished rider , holds a very responsible job and loves to read the articles and discussions , he wouldnt ever post on here , hes severly dyslexic , it affects his ability to spell words even remotly like they should be , spell check is of no help if the word he types only has one or two correct letters in it , sometimes i can decipher what he writes , mostly i use patience and guesswork .He also cant read or write text speak , so its useful that its discouraged on here .
but....
there is no way he would post starting with ,' oh by the way i,m dyslexic , so be gentle with me' , not after reading this thread , some comments have been helpful and understanding , some he has found upsetting and discouraging in general
So , to sum up , don,t be too harsh with people who do have the courage to write on here , not all of us have perfect grammatical english you know , doesn't make us less worthy of respect and understanding .

lilym - I have just read the post you're referring to and TBH I dont see the problem. The people who commented were not bullying, they did not know the girl had dyslexia although again TBH I know several people with it and dont know of any to spell like that. If someone has a condition where they cannot spell well, they really should spell check as it IS hard to read what she's said!

Nobody is slagging of dyslexics. All of us make the odd spelling and grammatical error. But the post does need to be readable or else of course someone is going to say something! It does look like text speak. Why have you not posted on there to explain?!

I've just read Rolys threads, and have to say I'm disgusted and think some people should be ashamed of themselves.

I'm standing in the corner with lilym on this one. Rolys threads amount to nothing more than schoolyard bullying, it doesn't matter what your intention was, what matters is how YOU made someone with a disability feel.

Posters jumped on the bandwagon, belittling the spelling and suggesting a spellcheck. Don't you realise that a spellcheck doesn't help people with dyslexia particularly?

Attack is showing itself to be the best form of defence here.

I haven't read the Flintus thread and am not commenting on that.

actually lilym has explained several times and still whenever roly posts all she gets is her spelling corrected and laughed at , i take exception to this , as I have also explained spell check is not always able to help the dyslexic poster as it comes up with various words that are incorrect because the original spelling is spelt to dissimilar to what it should be

Spell checkers don't always work for dyslexic people. They may spell the words correctly but have them in the wrong place in the sentence or get the words slightly wrong but spelt correctly. For example I put where instead of were, what instead of want, they, their, they're I get completely muddled up. But as they are spelt correctly spell checker doesn't help me!

Agreed, I am going to stand up in that corner with you.

Had this been localised to one thread of the original poster, where someone had offered corrections to some mistakes and then left it, I might have understood. However, in this case, the replies to the other Roly2's threads were nothing more than a chance for people to belittle- Only 1 or 2 of the posters actually attempted to answer the OP's questions.

Perhaps it would have saved a lot of grief if you had helped the OP with her 1st posting where she could have introduced herself and asked for any spelling errors etc to be overlooked as she had a problem. I hope that no-one on here would have been intentionally nasty if the facts had been know. I had only read the posts not posted but thought it was text language or a troll. If she is willing to carry on posting I am sure that she will get the replies that she deserves now that we all know. Hope that she can put this behind her and carry on posting as generally people are helpful/sympathetic.

My OH is really dyslexic and has terrible trouble with spelling (he asks me to spell check his texts and emails) and there is no way i would encourage him to post on here because i know what people are like and they would just be horrible about his posts.

and sorry but this is over the internet i don't think everyone knows everyone in the world, how can u possibly expect people on this forum to kno that this person has a disability

TBH, I have to agree. It looks like it got a bit out of hand. Makes uncomfortable reading in some parts. Am in the corner with the others.

i take it u do have permission from roly2 to make it public knowledge that they have a disability also?

(i don't mean that in a mean way either just they might not want people to know thats why they never said anything in the first place)

If you or your friend choose to post on any internet forum you expose yourselves to everyone's responses - good and bad. Some people will hate you, mock you, mis-understand you and think you sound like an idiot. Sorry, its harsh but if you and your friend can't take it, you should only ask for advice from friends who you know will be supportive and understanding. I know I don't give a stuff about you or your friend's feelings and will post what I want. If that makes me a bitch and a bully fine - from this post I see you as someone too quick to play the victim card. Live with it or only talk to people who like you.

Flintus thread i read as being a dig a text speakers - i found it amusing and understood it all - i think Lilym you were being a little over sensitive about the issue inhand by having a pop on that thread IMO. (n i undrstd al th frd, ow terible iz dat!)

the Roly threads i think are pretty poor really - yes they are spelt badly - and praise to the person who politely suggests using spell check , as it IS difficult to read badly spelt or punctuated posts.

The people who correct the spelling made me cringe - who on earth do you think you are !! I would never dream of correcting someones spelling on here no matter how poor it is, every poster on here is equal - whether you have posted once or 50,000 times. I think some people need to get over themselves a little bit !! Yes its a pain in the arse if its spelt wrong and yes you could presume its a teenager who can't be bothered but to humiliate someone who perhaps doesn't know any better / has dyslexia or similar?! Not fair - yes you don't know they have a problem unless they start every post by declaring it but thats not the point. It pretty clear its not text speak as even text speak makes sense to some degree.

Putting myself in Roly's shoes i'd be so embarrassed i'd probably never come on here again - and i'm not even a particularly sensitive soul. Is that the sort of imagine HHO wants? I know the equine sport is an elite one but come on, its takes all sorts.

And all this troll stuff isn't an excuse either, what tripe.

Have just read the posts in question and am rather shocked by people's responses to the OP.

Spell check will not always pick up mistakes especially since 'now' and 'our' for instance are actually words and in the computer's eyes not spelt wrongly.

QR -

I just read Roly's posts and I have to say (in my opinion) I found the reactions to them embarrassing.
Yes, text speak and bad spelling are annoying but there are much nicer ways of pointing it out without humiliating someone.

I read Flintus' post last night, without knowing why he started it.
I assumed it was just a lighthearted mockery of text speak and I nearly joined in; but now I see that it was in reaction to Roly's posts and is thus very cruel.
I am so glad I didn't post on it and I am sure there are lots of other people who will be wishing they hadn't too!

That probably depends on how uptight you are. And also if you think its good to laugh at disabled people.

Would you like to hear my cripple jokes?

Hehe, you can see that the 'evil pisstakers' are all the night time posters, and the upright defenders of 'dyslexics of the world' are all morning people. They must definitately all be evil..... (and yes, I know I spelt definately wrong......never been able to spell it, like particularly which I have now sussed)
