does anyone have any opinions on these? are they good / worth having or just a glorified extra layer?

are they waterproof?

Thanks!

I wear a Gillet one every day. They are great because stuff doesn't stick to them (hair/hay etc). I am getting a jacket one as I am so pleased with it. Wind and rain proof.

I've got a Dublin flex-x jacket and love it. It's waterproof in most rain (not in something really torrential I wouldn't think) and is breathable which for me is almost more important.

Warm for its weight, washable.

Funnily enough am starting to wonder about some winter breeches made of soft shell - so anyone with experience of those, would be glad to hear - sorry not meaning to hijack the thread- just widening its scope :D

Excellent, couldn't live without them! I hate coats that rustle, I just can't concentrate. I find softshell very comfortable, breathable, windproof, waterproof, great! I've had several different ones, my fave is pikeur as it seemed to breathe the best.
I'm also eyeing up some breeches ;)

Yeah that's about right. I've worn mine in reasonably heavy rain and stayed dry but they aren't a direct 'replacement for a proper waterproof coat.

I have a lovely black woof wear pro rider one that was really waterproof, but I put it in the tumble drier and the taped seams unstuck and I know just have glue marks along every seam. Really want another (remembering not to tumble it) but it was 90 quid and can't justify it! Really flattering cut though, and so warm.

I have an Ariat soft shell, and it is my favourite coat. Warm enough for most weathers, water-resistant enough for light rain, and very breathable. All my other coats make me sweat so much inside that I might as well not be wearing one!

If you're not bothered about a horsey label I got a super Trespass one off ebay outlet for £40. It's a lovely purple, really flattering fit. It's been out in rain etc and is pretty good. Haven't ridden in it yet as it's far too nice!

I have a musto and a trespass one (trespass one is my favourite, and only cost a tenner from the outlet!). I'd really recommend them, not waterproof, but are showerproof and windproof therefore really quite warm for how thick they are (they're really thin!)

I have a marmot one.

It is windproof and water resistant but if it really hacks it down, no it isn't waterproof.

They aren't designed for downpours. They're designed for being active up a mountain (rock climbing etc) originally so if you sit still on a horse in it for two hours in torrential rain you'll probably end up cold and wet.

I do love mine very much but I don't really find it that useful compared to other coats I have. I just like it as it is very comfy and it is super cool. It's pea green and awesome!

Ideal for days where it might rain but isn't when you leave or passing light shower type weather.

Mine is regatta. Go outdoors have a good choice and not too dear.

I'm not a fan. It is neither one thing nor the other. If I want warm but breathable and it isn't wet then a fleece or a down is better. If I want lightweight and showerproof then my paramo fuera windproof is better. If I want waterproof then I either wear goretex or paramo analogy. Paramo fabrics don't rustle and are soft and breathable, the modern goretex doesn't rustle either although it feels more like a waterproof than paramo. I have an old goretex that rustles so much I wouldn't wear it round horses but it is the sort of thing you pack in your rucksack for emergencies rather than something you wear all the time.
