So I have the oppurtunity to buy my loan pony whom I've had on loan since August.
He is a 14.1hh Irish Cob, black with four white socks and full feathered.
He has nice conformation (or so I'm told, I don't really know what I'm looking for other than he has four legs!), no scars or blemishes and no health problems, never been lame sick or sorry.
He's seven years old and I would say he is a happy hack.
I don't really school him as I'm a bit phobic of riding in the school, but I' hoping to have him schooled in spring for me and may even be brave enough to have lessons.
He is bare foot and never been footsore, he will ride on concrete and grass with no problems. He has no stable vices (other than rubbing his bum on things), and ridden his only real habit is putting his head down to nosh grass (which will soon be fixed when I get a daisy rein sorted), he can sometimes be strong in company but we think this is my nerves more than anything.
He's been to a local show showing with me and we are both beginners but got placed in every class, he behaved very well and didn't spook or misbehave.
I love the pony to absolute bits but have been guilty of making heart over head choices in the past with horses that has only ended in heartbreak, so I ask you, what is a fair price you would pay for this horse?
I have popped some pictures below, hopefully it'll show up :)
The horse is passported by the way but doesn't come with any tack or accessories (I have bought him everything even down to the headcollar and lead rope).

Can you sort the size of that first photo out? I'm having to scroll twice the width of my screen so I've only read about one line of your post.

Looks a darling and would defo buy - horses like him don't come along that often, especially ones that you can trust with your children!

Also you know him well so there will be no hidden problems, the issues he does have are all minor, and already have all the tack etc....no brainer to me x

What sort of prices would you put on him? I want to know if I'm being stingey or not with my offer, and to be fair the woman has offered to meet me halfway between her offer and mine, but I don't want to jump into anything :)

Her starting price was £3500 I believe, she then came down to £3000, I offered £2200 baring in mind all his tack and back and teeth checks, shes come down to £2500 so The half way point, not sure whther to stick to £2200 or accept her offer :-/

I don't think 2,5 is outrageous if he's as well mannered as you say. He looks a nice sort. Though if you can get him for 2,2 obviously do!

Unrelatedly, can you feel his ribs? He's certainly going to be one whose weight you will need to watch :D

Why be so rude................if you couldn't read it why bother responding!!

That was not intentionally rude, in fact I can't read it as rude at all, it merely pointed out to the OP a problem, upon which she acted!

- and now I'm back at my pc AND can see the post I'd say that I'd go for the £2.5K! Buying horses with tack you so often have to replace it all anyway as it doesn't really fit so that's already sorted for you. If he's safe, sane and sensible and will have a go at whatever you want him to do then I think he's a very good buy.

Thanks very much people :-) and JFT yes I can feel his ribs easily but you cant see them, which is how I understand it should be? Or have I mistaken that one? He does get a little tucked up every now and again but Ive altered his rugging and feed accordingly and I think were there :-)

The price seems expensive to me but that's not really the point IMO.

If you really like him and already have a history/relationship, I wouldn't let 300 be a sticking point (if it doesn't bankrupt you).

If she is looking to sell and people here are saying the price is OK, then you would be gutted if you lost him for the sake of 300.

If you love him, feel safe on him and he does everything you want him to, I would buy him for £2,500. You may find another horse cheaper that is nowhere near as right for you as this one.

I like to be able to see the shadow of a rib at this time of year particularly, but if they are easily felt... I only ask as he looks overweight in the pics but his confo enhances that / makes them potentially deceptive!

He sounds lovely and it is so difficult to price something that you have had a chance to get to know well so I can see why you are struggling. When I bought my the loan horse his owner had originally priced him at £3,000 when we did the agreement but circumstances changed as they were so happy with the home I'd given him and they found a loan horse they needed money to keep that they offered me the chance to buy him 8 months earlier than planned! They basically only wanted me to buy him and whilst I'd have done whatever I could to buy him if they'd stuck to £3k when I went to them and said I only had £1800 they happily agreed that price.

My horse is totally different to your's but I think our circumstances sound similar. I also had made mistakes with horses in the past and I adore Max and felt safe on him so I would say try and secure him even if it means having to go to £2500. Good luck x

Buy him, £2,5k isn't unreasonable if he'll be your forever horse. Split that over the next 20 years and it's not too much is it? You may never find another like him, you already know him, and he sounds like the sort who is quite literally worth his weight in gold.

he is everything you want in a horse?

if he is then he is worth what you are willing to pay, yes if you hold out you are likely to get him cheaper (IMO) but what if you hold out and he goes to someone else-you may pay £2200 and get problems-you know him and know his history

only you can answer is he is worth £2500 to you
