I've got a new dog (arrived week before Christmas - he's about a year old) who just won't stop barking at my horses. We've tried everything we can think of, but still he barks at them. I got speaking to a dog trainer the other day and was telling him about it and he said to get a collar which has the citrus spray in it. When he barks, I hit the remote button, saying "no" at the same time, and a small spray hits the dog and makes him stop - DOES IT? I've priced these collars up and they're nearly a hundred pounds so don't want to waste this money unless I know they do work (and hopefully will work with mine).

So has anyone used one and how did you get on with it? I need to get the one with the remote control as the little monkey knows he's doing wrong and always barks when I'm in another stable or the other side of the yard and not close to him. As soon as I go towards him, he runs off knowing he's in the wrong and of course, when I've moved away, he does it again. I don't want to keep locking him up in the house because that's not fair on him, and apart from this barking at the horses, he is absolutely brilliant in every respect. He isn't on his own either, when I'm in the yard he plays with my two guard dogs who live out permanently in the yard and neither of them bark at the horses, it's just him.

If they do work, does anyone know whether I could hire one rather than buy one? Thanks.

I have one cause Harley can bark at people he doesn't know....

However I was told not to get the one with the remote, but the one that automatically goes off when they bark. This was because your timing has to be 100% for it to have the desired effect (and be fair to the dog! You can't spray him 10 secs after he's barked!). You may not have it in your hand when he barks?

The one I have for Harley has definitly worked and he doesn't bark at people with it on (although if he doesn't he does realise after a while and will start, although it is nothing like it used to be)

My friend had one for her dog though and it didn't have any effect..... We think it is becuase her dog just didn't care (real tough type) whereas mine is a very sensitive boy!

Works wonders on Tyson... Sadly it doesnt pick up his whining and hes figured out exactly the amount of noise he can get away with before he gets sprayed  but when he does a propper bark it sprays him instantly, and now when the door knocks now he just runs around in circles*quietly* its hillarious! :o

The general rule of thumb is if a plant sprayed at the dog at the correct time to correct barking works then so will a collar, if however the dog likes being sprayed or ignores it then they tend not to work. The same goes for the corrector sprays (just high pressured air) all our dogs hate them to the point where you only have to hold the can, but out new pup thinks they are fab and loves it, but them there is nothing Normal about this puppy lol

I used an anti-bark collar for my screaming fence-runner :p and it hyped her up even more...have you used distraction techniques? Long, time consuming and boring but a better option sometimes.

i have used the citronella one with great sucsess.
it was less than £60 at pets at home, it is brilliant, i ran out of spray about 3 weeks ago and the dog has still not barked because she has it on.

i would reccomend it to anyone, stopped the barking within the hour

i had a rescue bitch come here, she barked repeatedly without taking breath for 3 days.
i wanted to nip it in the bud before it became established behaviour, it it the best thing i have bought, she was a happier dog in herself with it on, she was winding herself up barking.

I have a spray collar for my JR cos he barks at other dog when out. Doesn't work!
But works on my rescue when he barks during the evening wanting to play (neighbours)

Thanks for all your responses. I think I will definitely give it a go purely because we've tried every other option. As for distracting him - well, that would mean we would have to constantly stand and play with him all the time, which sadly, isn't something we can do when we are trying to muck out etc. The dog trainer said to go for the remote one, purely because he said if I was in a stable the other side of the yard and he was barking at one of the stables opposite, I could hit the remote whilst shouting "No", even if it was seconds later because he would still be barking. He said if I went for the one which just instantly sprays when he barks, he wouldn't know what he was getting sprayed for. (Hope that makes sense reading it!).

And I don't want him to stop barking completely, it's just at the horses - he can bark as much as he wants when someone approaches my gates (as my other two guard dogs do). They have never barked at the horses, except when they want to draw my attention to one of them, i.e. horse laying down in the stable with colic or cast, etc., but otherwise are quiet in the yard but will go ballistic if someone does approach my house - one was an ex-Police GSD and he is the best guard dog ever and he's taught the Ridgeback when to bark, but however much the two of them try to shut the pup up, he still continues with the result that the two guard dogs now just walk away and leave him to it. I think they're getting a headache from him too. The Ridgeback does take the pup away and play chase with him and the GSD will grab the pup around the neck and give him a judo throw, but the pup thinks it's all good fun.

So spray collar on order now I think. As I said, I hope it will just be for him to wear on a short term basis - he is a very clever dog but he's got to learn that barking at the horses is a definite no. (Apart from that, he's giving us a chronic headache as well).

Hmm Cattle dogs are very intelligent so my two came up with different solutions to the problem of the spray collar.

I used the spray 2 or 3 times at the most with Digger when he got OTT at training, now all I have to say is beep beep and he shuts up.

Blue the Antichrist figured it out after two uses, you shut your eyes and carry on whatever it is your doing until the spray runs out!! Then you can open your eyes and carry on regardless until the Sheila catches you removes the collar and refills the thing but since I beat it she can't be bothered!!

Hi Penniless,
Sorry to come to this thread a bit late but I would get the remote one for all the reasons you give. I have used mine now on two different dogs for two different situations the first was a dog refusing to recall when in the garden. Now just needs the beep. The second dog was for barking.
One thing you might find it a pain but use the manufacturers batteries I tried just getting replacements from a camera shop and they very, very quickly died!!
Hope you soon get things sorted.

We've used one with limited sucess and i don't think i'd recommend them. We bought one on recommendation of a trainer as well.

First time we used it on Dog 1 she thought she was being attacked and freaked out when sprayed, she jumped about like a mad woman trying to find what had got her.

Dog 2 got the idea straight away and we were really pleased - but he worked out he only got sprayed when the collar was on so it became pointless for actually solving the problem.

I have to say we've had more success with a water bottle.

i use the collar daily on my dog - when we leave her she barks so we have an autospray one....

works wonders and no more moaning neighbours :)
