Standing Martingale

[ QUOTE ]
Did i say i wasn't using loads of leg etc! I used it with the advise of my highly reguarded instrutor, she showed my how to make the best safe use of it etc...
As i said it doesn't suite everyone, i'm only giving my opinion.

The Showjumper that recomended it was Geoff Billington, at a demo. Other jumpers i have seen using them are:
John Whitaker
Robert "
Ben Mayher..............the list goes on!

I only asked what they're reasoning were???

As I said I have never heard it recommended before and was just wondering why!

As for your riding, you never mentioned it and seens as I dont know you I wouldn't be judging you.

I was just interested to know......

All i can say is it has really helped Jack. His flat work is really good, get good dressage scores etc. He is fine over a single fence, but as soon as ther is a course he gets longer and longer, it is absolutley impossible to bring him back (his neck is just solid muscle). The standing just stops that happening. Usually i put it on for the 1st class. Then he is fine after that, so he is definately learning.

Actually meant AmyMay.

There are plenty of showjumpers who don't believe in winching in all their horses' heads.

Personally i wouldn't use one to jump, but a lot of people do, including a lot of hunters who jump huge hedges. You could put a caverson noseband under or over the mexican to put the standing martingale on.

sorry kayleigh i knew what you meant but you said yourself that it was the extreme, didn't mean to cause any confusion!

*im getting confused myself!*

i really hate seeing horses jumped in standing martingales and I also really hate market Harboroughs as they both restrict movement. My friend jumps/schools her horse in a Market Harborough and it drives me mad as it's so clear that the horse doesn't have enough movement over his back and neck and tends to stag jump. Her response is she wants to prevent him putting his head up or running into the fences...in my opinion it is simply a case of laziness as she doesn't do enough flatwork to get him working properly from behind and responsive to her hands/leg aids. I finally persauded her to put him in a normal martingale and the change in his jump was almost instant...much better bascule and less tension. However it also showed how weak he is with hind/neck as he got exhausted very quickly.

Totally agree jackster ive order the john whitikar one to match my bridle ! love all these ppl on here who do a search beleave what they read then post it lol
Hows about when ur tanking down a field with your horses head bolt upright u try get him to stop and his reaction is to thow his head to the floor flying u forwards !
Ive jumped my horse BSJA in a standing and it worked a treat not restricting him over the fence but just helping me get him back where i need him inbetween fences ! Anyone who thinks im wrong can come take my horse around a british novice then after he has tanked off with u then dumped u even in his honnoverian pelham with a three inch port and rollers then you can tell me what todo with him ! if he goes nice in it and jumps clears and i have his backed checked and ther is no probs i dnt see what the big hoo har is all about loads of the top show jumpers jump in them with ther youngster to get them started in the correct outline !

David Broome in his hey day ,Nick skelton and all of the Edgars regularly used a standing and a running together and it never did them any harm.

You know what I mean.....

I jump my horse in a Standing Martingale with an Elastic insert. She's never fallen over wearing it, She's always been able to help me out if I get it wrong, She jumps really nice in it and when I try to ride her on the flat at home without one it is horrible.

Do you think she looks restricted here?

Somebody who actually answerd my question thanku for ur help xx

I thought you were asking if they were legal for BSJA, then say you have used one? And also, they will do very litle to stop a horse plunging unless you have it on super tight. Try taking all the gear off, you may find your horse is fighting the gear...

oh and i just remembered my cob was ridden and jumped in a standing martingale by her owner and he jumped gates, hedges, etc on her and she never had any probs. Come to think of it i would use a standing martinglae if i had a horse who stuck its head right in the air. Rather that than get smacked in my face

Wher did u get that from the john whitikar one doesnt have elastic in it and id prefer it with elastic in !!!!!1

My horse is riden without any gadgets, his bit is a snaffle. It is not about being strong when he jumps, he puts his head down and charges to the next fence. When he is in a standing i can concentrate on getting his striding etc correct, without fighting, therefore a much safer jumping round. It is not on "super tight" but is there as a reminder and it works. (again it works for me, i'm not saying for everyone).

I bought it off Ebay as it was the only one I could find, however it very poor quality so wouldn't recommend it - JW do do one it clips on to a running martingale.

I am finding it impossible to buy a good quality one that isn't just an attachment - tried the whole of badminton and the only 1 I found was with Kate Negus, but that was an attachment as well. I was going to ask her to make me one but she was so rude I thought no, not giving you my money.
