This article is very misleading!!!I have witnessed horses being slaughtered in our abbatoirs many times and it is nothing like this article. The horses are treated with the utmost respect and most are not even frightened, there is also a vet present and the abattoir undergoes many strict inspections. Without our abattoirs there would be so many unwanted horses, more horses than people to look after them, which would poss end up in many being neglected. In fact some horses that end up at the abattoir were clearly not well looked after and it is a welcome end to their suffering. I think it would catastrophic to ban horse slaughter, and I am a big horse lover. You would also run the risk of horses being exported live which is horrendous and therefore I would prefer them to be exported as meat!!!!!

Oh good lord. What a load of drivel.
The abattoir provides a necessary service for many horses, whether you like it or not there are unwanted horses in this country and whilst you or I would want to have horses pts at home when the time comes many others do not. Closing down slaughterhouses will not stop this, just deny one avenue of humane destruction of injured or unwanted horses whose lives will be prolonged often with immense cruelty.
From personal experience at the abattoir (having to go to collect samples for research for equine veterinary puproses), I have not witnessed any of the rubbish spouted on the "Robin Cook" page, its utter nonsense. And having met Stephen Potter (a thoroughly nice guy) I am not convinced that he would agree that a horse has the intelligence of a 7 year old child - horses have a brain the size of an orange which controls half a ton of animal, it does not have the full cognitive power of a human child. Whilst I agree that they are sensitive and beautiful animals (I am a horse lover) and would not want my horse to go to the abattoir I think that perpetuating such ludicrous propaganda you are not helping prevent cruelty - quite the opposite.

PS. We do not have Premarin farms in this country, target the US for that.

The price of human euthanasia is the same as a few shoeing’s if we can afford to shoe our horses while they serve us then we can afford to give them a compassionate death. Cost of euthanasia by a vet is £35 average, and if not a pet to be buried on your own land, between £75 and £100 for removal by a fallen stock company. Euthanasia, according to an article by Dr Sean Bowman, an American vet in “blood horse” quotes “ is an induction to anaesthesia just like for surgery the vet continues to overdose the horse, they are not afraid, there is no fear or anticipation of death.

Lets pretend that they do indeed mean humane euthanasia. There are some glaring problems with this statement
-Burying fallen stock is no longer legal
-Price of euthanasia is much more than £35 when you factor in call out etc
-Most stock disposal costs upwards of £100
-Some horses have violent and upsetting reactions to lethal injection

I am getting more and more amused by the proposterousness of this site....

I agree completly with Lucy_Spring and Chestnutxx, I have also had experience of the abattoir and have never witnessed the kind of things that have been expressed on that website. The guys that work in the abattoir have been around and own horses and would never be cruel, laugh or cheer at a horse that has been shot. Some of the horses are treated with more respect at the abattoir in their final moments than they have seen in their lives. Some of the horses that have arrived at the abattoir that I have witnessed are in such a bad state of neglect that you should be going after their owners not the abattoir.

i have to say that that site is promoting histeria.
in this country we have licensed slaughter houses and the animals are not treated with disrespect (from personal experience).
we have a lot of unwanted/injured horses in this country and the slaughter man is one way of humane slaughter. to get rid of it would be stupid to the extreme. these slaughter houses also deal with sheep/cows and so on - all animals too - but apparently not worth an appeal of their own.
horses have no idea that this place means death - they have no concept of death only fight and flight. as long as everything is calm and orderly they have no reason to do either. most horses are used to regular travelling and moving to new places so the majority are completely unfazed - they do not know whats happening.
they do not take pot luck with a captive bolt - a good slaughter man does not miss and in the main the horse hasnt even realised there may be a problem. they do not fall to the ground realising they have been betrayed by mankind - they are dead - end of. there are involuntary muscle contractions (same as with anything dying - infact muscles will twitch for hours - even when completely isolated from the body!). there is some blood from the bolt and urine will be released as the muscles stop contracting controlling the bladder. the horse is then 'processed' like every other slaughtered animal - and it is certainly not alive!

i'm a great believer in knowing where my food comes from - if you eat meat/wear leather then you should know about animal rearing/slaughter etc. all animals have a right to a good life and a humane slaughter. this website, as far as uk slaughter houses are concerned, is total c***p!!!!

To OP:

LS thank you for putting into words what I am too upset to. We had our beloved pony shot last month, I firmly believe this was the only humane way to end his life, he was petrified of needles and was such a stressed pony that I know a lethal injection would have panicked him.

As it was the last things he saw were my dad and the biggest bucket of feed he had ever been allowed to stick his nose in.

So forgive me for being INHUMANE. But I'd make the same heartbreaking decision tomorrow if I had to.

ETs :the man from the abatoir who put dinky to sleep could not have been more kind or gentle and made the whole process easier, despite being met by 3 wailing women when he arrived.

If we lost the ability to send horses to the slaughter house in this country, it would be the worst possible outcome for Equine welfare in this country.

Sorry but I am totally against this.

sorry - you really should question everything you read - i hope you dont believe everything on the news for example - things do get spun - especially animal rights.
live horse transportation to slaughter is horrendous - however UK slaughter houses are nothing like they have been portrayed

I know i understand this. but the horse in that case study was caused unneccessary suffering!! Live animal transport must be stopped and so should this cruelty the animals in their last hours. I dont believe everything that is written, I am not completely naive but as i said, no animal should have to endure this end to life!!

Perhaps you should sign a petition for better regulation of live transportation of animals, in fact I believe the law is changing in January anyway to improve thigns dramitically anyway.

Ok some of what is in the article maybe true, some of what the posters say must be true.

I'm disgusted by the picture of the fallen horse (the one having been hit in the cheek), so why did this happen if all care is taken??

You have got to be joking!

I've never read such a load of sensationalistic drivel in my life, sorry if that offends anyone.

I think of myself as a horse lover but am realistic enough to know when something needs to be put down. For me, that involves the hunt kennels who are quick and compassionate, both to the horse and myself. I could never send my horse to an abbatoir, to me that is unfair on the horse and in some cases, a cop out from the owner; but that is my personal choice and everyone has different circumstances (as in there aren't many hunt kennels in suberbia, also in some cases, the owner really does need that little bit of money the carcase brings in from an abbatoir). I would rather a horse be taken to a proper abbatoir than be left at home to a lingering death - that to me is cruelty.
What on earth would happen to the many sick, unwanted, useless horses (even as a horse lover I accept there are some useless or rather some unusable ones for whatever reason) if abbatoirs were closed down?; it would see an almost national explosion of cruelty by neglect cases at the very least. Surely these people who want it banned can see that; what is their response to that?

Sorry, I for one will not be signing any petition to see horse slaughter in this country banned, that would surely help further the export trade of live horses abroad and I definitely do not want to see a return to those dark days, they were horrific.

FGS I am just saying that I do not have a problem with humane slaughter of horses or any animals but why should a horse endure the pain that it did in said article at the start of this post!!! If you havent read it then you shouldnt comment and i aplogise if you have read it.
no horse should have to have it life ended in such an inhumane and cruel way. its should be done swift and quick so that they do not notice it!! What i am against is this unneccesary cruel and dispicable end to such a wonderful creatures life.
I AM a horse lover and i too am realistic enough to know when a horse has had its day-but why end it in such a way that they do not die with a happy thought knowing they were loved but with a slow lingering pain which no person on this earth will EVER have to feel.

That is cruelty.

Well said. Why do people insist on believing this kind of propaganda. The fact that it's so badly written alone would make me think twice about any of the 'facts' it contains.

I do hope you dont mean me by the above statement? i run a retirment livery for owners who love there horse for who he is and not what he can do for them and want a decent retirement because he deserves it and a peacefull end not a journey to a hell hole...sorry but any slaughter house is a hell hole, the stentch of death, blood and animals constantly calling out is HELL for any animal.

to be honest i expected the people on this site to pass the remarks they have bar a few (thank you for signing)

keep up the hard faces and stiff backs and you will never know what it feels like to REALLY love an animal for who he is.

I think thats rather harsh to be honest

You cant accuse people of not loving their animals when numerous people on this forum go to hell and back with their horses and all because they question the legitimacy of a link!

But I could make a website in a couple of hours tonight, dig out some horrendous looking photos.. slap it all online and voila.. claim its all first hand knowledge of whats going on.

I for one detest the idea of horses (well, alright ANY animal) suffering in this way but I also want to know that what Im supporting is coming from a credible place!

It IS possible to distort things and the internet is a haven for exactly that

I knew I shouldnt have read it but curiosity got the better of me.

I do however seem to remember a documentary several years ago (I think i was in my teens at the time) that showed some pretty shocking and horrid images of horse slaughter.

Id never condone horses suffering in this way because Im one of the people who do believe they're intelligent animals.. But I do like to know where the information is coming from because its so easy on the internet for everything to get exaggerated
