I have been adding to feed and mixing in. I have just read something saying sprinkle on top and now I think about it vet said to add on top. So mix it in or sprinkle on top (would he even eat it is just sprinkled on)?

Why on earth would it make any difference once he's chewed his food, swallowed it, and got his stomach churning it about?

I’m sure it dosnt but in my panicked state ANYTHING that might be the clue to why he isn’t getting better is being over analysed and better over analysed!! If someone said stand on you head and hum here come the clowns I would ask how many times and how loud!

You are supposed to sprinkle bute on top just before feeding rather than mix into a wet feed... has a coating on it. I don't know about sucralfate but might be the same.

They're film coated so the coating itself is inert and breaks down in the acidic environment in the stomach so the active is only takes released there.

From what I remember if you leave it in the wet feed too long the outer coating breaks down. I used to sprinkle on top then give the bucket a quick shake just before it was given to the horse.

Ulcers can take ages to heal. Especially if they were bad, you may need several “cycles” to clear them up

Yes, this is what I’ve always been told. If the coating is broken down before ingestion, the active won’t get to where it needs to be.

I had to feed it on its own on an empty stomach. It was a fine white powder and I had to mix with a little water and syringe it into mouth. That was done first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. Then had to wait half an hour before giving gastroguard. Wait anither half hour, then feed.

This is how I’ve treated my mare, the vet advised it.

Whereas mine was tablets and advised by my vet to put in feed but not allow them to sit wet, so I mixed in or sprinkled on right as I fed. I don’t leave my horse without forage so feeding on empty stomach made no sense. It’s not like his stomach is ever full like a human, it has a constant trickle of food through it. Worked perfectly well my way so I wouldnt stress too much, just give it time. I’ve had an ulcer and they don’t feel better straight away.

Unfortunately there seem to be a lot of conflicting views on how to feed ulcer meds. Confusing for owners. I just trust what my vet tells me- it’s so easy to start over thinking it all.?

yeah, mine is the opposite way round to MW, i have to give GG on an empty tum, sucralfate 45 mins later and 30 mins after that I can give hay. I'm just following the instructions given (which differ to what is printed on the sucralfate label!!)

K, I'm 4 weeks into a 6 week course and so far my horse is still appearing to be very uncomfortable. it's hard to stay positive but I keep on reading about horses that needed longer courses of meds so just have to try and be patient and keep on going (who needs sleep anyway, i LOVE starting work at 6am in the car )

Im new to the Ulcer club and am reading so any different ways to feed the Gastrogard and Sufralcate. Ive been told 3 times a day?? Give the GG on an empty stomach, wait an hour and give feed with Sufralcate in it, then turn out etc but if riding later on, to give it with a small feed 30 mins before. The tubs going down fast! It seems most are told to give it once a day.

I used to feed sucralfate twice a day and GG once a day in the morning. I followed the instructions from the vet to the letter and she felt better literally in a few days (though they did keep coming back but that's a different matter)

i have to give sucralfate twice, but the evening one just goes in her feed.

So many different instructions make it tough. Vet said to give peptizole in the morning, wait while I muck out then feed and turn out. Then next vet said give sucralfate 2 hours after peptizole so to give in the evening with his feed.

The weather has won. Even 4wd were skidding up the road to yard this morning. No end in sight of below freezing temps. Vet can’t scope at yard so we have postponed till next Friday and just stay on the meds till then.
