OK....just out of interest....how many people use martingales and flash nosebands and the like?

I have noticed that pretty much all the horses on the yard have either/or ....and I was thinking that surely this must be to do with fashion/whats available...because surely they can't all 'need' them?

My horses have cavesson nosebands, no martingales or other attachments....surely it cant be just be me out there?

So.....who uses martingales/flashes and why?

Not judging....just interested as to your reasons

I think it is just a fashion, people just seem to use them out of habit. I use no martingale or flashes (plain cavesson) on any of mine and happily compete one of mine at BE Novice / * and 1.20 BSJA like this. It surprises me how many eventers seem to use quite harsh bits, flashes, martingales etc.!

no - as long as I stick to the trusty old pelham I have no cause to use a martingale or a flash.

When i attempted to ride Murphy in a snaffle I did put a flash on because he just went round with his mouth half open, but I gave up on the snaffle because he was never going to be happy in it.

I use a running martingale just because she tends to have moments where she stuffs her nose in the air as high as she can. She's also a rearer and I find a martingale helps with safety. Although I did try riding her without and decided it's safer with and I can always revert back to without. And I don't use a flash, just a plain old noseband and snaffle.

Charlie wears a martingale as if he didn't I would have no control out hacking, I am hoping that I will be able to remove it for schooling in the future but not quite yet.

He is ridden in a plan cavesson as anything else causes him to panic and rear.

Millie used to have a martingale but we realised that she actually goes tons better without one, she also has a normal cavesson noseband (and is ridden in a snaffle

I use neither, I have always been strong enough to keep my horse's from going above the vertical and if I wasn't I'd be schooling them til they stopped it rather than using a leather pully system.

As for nosebands my old Highland use to wear a drop cos he was rather opinionate on some matters, after a year or so it got replace with just a cavesson, clealry broken his spirit

Now I don't use one as I don't need one, Arab's look fine without the noseband but I appreciate why horse's with heavier heads wear cavessons.

I use a flash .... on my horse that headshakes - its excellent for holding the nosenet down (stops it flapping up in the wind!)

I use a martingale on the other - cos my jumping instructor told me too. Not sure why ... maybe i should ask her. The neck strap is an excellent "grab handle" though :-)

Ella is in a running martingale as i am allergic having her ears up my nose. Hopefully, she will eventually be schooled out of needing it. She came to me in a grackle, but is now in a plain cavesson - went to a flash initially but didnt even need that so took the strap off it.

Both. I always use a running martingale on every horse i've had. I cannot stand to see horses jumping with their head stuffed in your face and out of control and before you tell me they should be well schooled, not every horse takes they schooling into the ring and a running matingale doesn't hurt one bit. Plus it's nice to have a strap to hold onto when they have a funny 5 mins.

The one i have now has a flash because he opens his gob and sets his jaw. I don't put one on everything though.

Jazz is in caversson with no martingale, but I do attatch a flash for hacking otherwise we wouldn't get out of the yard!

You've not met my horse

Unfortunatly it's a good principle and it sounds good on paper. However in reality not every horse will be schooled into submission. I have had a top eventer try to help me with my horse and after less than half an hour he could tell what she was like. Stubborn as a mule with a serious attitude problem and lazy just to top it all off. So I agree with you that I wouldn't want to use a piece of leather as a substitute for schooling but unfortunatly it doesn't always work that way. (Not picking on you or anything, just in general

If I'm lazy, no martingale and I always use cavesson... usually have breastplate on but more a a neckstrap - not that I ever use it.

When it comes to cleaning time I simplify and the breastplate doesn't see daylight for a while as its more straps to clean!!

My horse is in a flash and a running martingale.

I took her down to the beach last summer with no martingale, no noseband and a rubber snaffle and she was absolutely fine - but at the moment, I'm not her primary rider. They are there for safety reasons, fitted correctly and loosely, and she doesn't object in the slightest.

a martingale correctly fitted will not interfere with the horses way of going and will only come into play when needed so where is the harm in that????

No martingale but have just this week swapped my cavesson for a flash as Taff has discovered the joys of opening his mouth to evade the contact.

I use a martingale for faster work and a kimberwick with a cavesson noseband, George can throw his head up when jumping etc. also gives me a neckstrap to hang onto!

For flatwork, no martingale and a drop noseband as he will sometimes put his tongue over his snaffle if not.

One of my boys has a plain cavesson nose band and no martingale, his snaffle mouth and good as gold.
The other has both, he likes to avaid the bit and will do anything to do so. Stick a flash on his better but still has his head inthe air so the martingale limits this.

Running martingale... yes, but only becaue it is attached to his breast girth, and doesnt do any damage it being there. Flash noseband yes, as he has an uncanny habit of being able to get his tongue over his bit if he can get his gob open.... hence it is strapped shut!

I never said there was any harm in martingales or any nosebands....but my point was, these items of tack are designed with specific purposes in mind, and sometimes IMO they are used when they are not needed.....as I said, the vast majority of horses on my yard have either/or and these are all pleasure riders/happy hackers with a bit of jumping at local shows, we're not talking BSJA or team chasing or anything.....half of them plop their pants when it comes to a good old canter in the woods so perhaps they are used as a sort of reassurance for the rider or possibly people dont know the reasons for using them and just buy what they think looks nice or whatever.

personally, I have had several horses/ponies who all came with martingales and flash nosebands...they don't go any different with or without them, so IMO if they dont make any difference then why use them?

Obviously I appreciate that some horses do need certain items of tack....otherwise they wouldnt have been invented/developed.

As I said, not judging....just interested.
