On a bit a whim, an oversized TB x Welsh D just backed 5yo was purchased to be a project stop gap until my yearling is ready.

He squeezed into the trailer (just) and headed up the M5 to temporary accommodation with a friend of mine, so I can test drive him with help on hand.

He has been here 10 days and so far very positive!!
He spent the first day snorting and spooking and the ceramic manger in his old stone stable :D but soon got over himself and is now very settled.

He has been out on the roads in company and met bikes, tractors etc with no drama. The giant killing Heston straw bale had him sitting on his nannies lap, but otherwise the worst he has done is have a bit of a huff and a puff.

He managed to survive the zooalogical gauntlet (otherwise known as the rescue goats, pigs, donkeys, shetlands that need to be navigated to get to the school). Schooling session one was hence a write off and involved lots of gawky spooking at everything. But back in there the next day following a nanny around, then flew solo again the third day and much improvement.

He has had a little trot and canter solo around the fields and whilst had a spooky huff and puff there has been no sign of any naughtiness.

We also tested him over some poles and very pleased with his response - for such a huge green baby he is aware of his feet.

We will quietly chip away over the winter, just needs to find his balance. Then next year he might go out eventing with my friend and I'll play with the dressage.

Some little bits of video if anyone's interested.

Ooo, he is very nice! How big is he?

Honest answer is I don't know!! Don't have a stick. He was sold as 16.3hh, but the nanny we use is 17.1/2hh and there wasn't much between them stood up. He is probably 17hh, but a big type, neck up in front of you and a bit of a chunk!

I think he is lovely but it must be cold on top :p his stride is so long as well (especially when not used to seeing much over 14 h lol). Congrats, is he giving you your mojo back?

I can almost see you in Scotland from up top!
Yes mojo is returning, I can't put my finger on it but I think this one could turn out special. If nothing else he will surely sell into the Beaufort, but I think he is more than that. I hope.

glad to hear it. I would get dizzy I think-it's bad enough riding the 16.2h I have lessons on!

Let's think of the positives. Trying to keep the canter together will save me gym membership. Although I mustn't get too complacent and think 'can now eat as much cake as I like', as tempting as it is, the yearling isn't going to be big enough to carry my lard!

He's lovely. I'll have him in the 14.2 version! Is that you on board?

I could chop him off at the knees if you like? (Or on second thoughts maybe at the shoulder!!),

No it's not me on board, my feet don't leave the ground these days, that's my friend who will hopefully pop him around some events next year.

:eek::eek::eek: Project, you say?

Project?

That movement! So lovely and unmanufactured.

If he was 2" smaller I'd have him in a heartbeat. He's a bit special, isn't he?

Where do people find these nice horses that aren't warmbloods with ££££££ in the breeding before the foal even pokes a hoof out?

He was listed >>>> as a potential weight carrying hunter. I feel like I've robbed the breeder because yes, there is something special about him.
