Talk to me about Fell ponies...

Only lot 3 really catches my eye (the one I posted about above), the owner is open to viewing beforehand so going to see him this weekend. Nothing else really matches what I'm after.

Are you going to the sale CM?

Thats good to know EOAS, I'll have a google of him :)

Hopefully we'll be making our annual excursion to the FPS sales.

As another poster said above, breeders have been selling their foals from home this year, demand has been high but demand seems to have been high for all horses, ponies, puppies etc, just wondering how long the market can remain buoyant for.

I went to see the fell pony I posted about above today, he was really lovely, so easy and quiet but not a boring ride at all. I’d say his stride wasn’t any shorter than my 16hh ish! So I guess I’ll see how much he goes for at the sale...

He wasn’t at chunky as some fells I’ve seen, he’s 5, would you expect him to chunk out some more?

He should have all the bone and feather he will ever have, but carcase wise he wont finish off till back end of 7 if not rising 8.

If you are interested try and buy him before the sale.

A good morning out at the sale, no purchases for me unfortunately. Was good to see the ponies going for good prices. Did you get the one you were after @cumbriamax ?

No unfortunately not. One lot I was interested in wasn't forward at the sale on the day. I'm now regretting not bidding higher on Waverhead Rocket man. I liked some of the foals, but it would've meant buying two as I think foals need to be with other foals.

Good to see foals going for more realistic prices With fillies averaging £1296 and colts £965 Hopefully this will continue as the value of our native breeds is better understood and this won’t be a sale to find a cheap pony. Top price for a ridden 18 year old mare was 3700 gns so just over £4000. The ridden stallion was sold for 2000 gns maybe would have been better sold as a gelding, rather than offering to geld although ridden ponies seem to have been selling well outside the ring.

What sort of weight are they up to? I've had a breeder tell me a 13.2hh fell is fine with a 16stone rider which seems far, far too much to me

I really wouldn't be comfortable with any of mine carrying 16 stone.I would have thought thirteen stone would be about the most and that would be one of the larger, bigger boned ponies in good condition. I recall reading that they are up to 15 stones though so perhaps I am wrong.

I have a 14hh and wouldnt let a 16 stone person on her! I wouldn't let a 16 stone on most horses.
The bigger ones are fine to take about 11 stone of someone who can ride. Any heavier then the riders backside will pour over the back of the saddle and end up causing long term damage as most of these ponies go in a 16 or 16.5 saddle or possibly a 17 on some longer backed mares.
Sorry if this offends, but pony health comes 1st with me.

And then you see some of the people riding them in the show ring ...

We had a 14 hand fell in my rda (now retired) she had a 9 and a half stone weight limit. I rode her at that weight and 5'8 and she barely noticed me, lovely pony, rode bigger than her size.

I'd love a larger fell or dales, forward but safe.

No offence taken. They dont look like huge weight carriers to me but I dont know the breed enough to know if I was wrong and the breeder was right.

I think I remember reading somewhere that they used to carry 16/17stone of goods when they were used as packhorse centuries ago but goodness knows what the source of that information was and how accurate it is. So yhat might be why the breeder said they could carry that weight. Even if they did carry that weight, I would imagine it wasn't good for them. I was once informed that Highlands can carry 20 stone I can't believe that either.

Agree with Elf on a shelf about riders in the show ring but it's not just in fells showing though!
