Tell me all about these breeds

I need a dog that is very little, and can walk for at least 4 hours a day and can jump in case I do get back into agility, must be friendly with other dogs, *though I believe it depends on the upbringing so shouldn't be a problem* not a yappy type
Miniature Pinscher, Norwich terrier, cairn terrier, chihuahua, westie, toy poodle
Can you tell me all your experiences, knowledge on these breeds

You said not yappy but yet most of those breeds you list are yappy?

I don't know much about little dogs, so I don't know what is yappy and what isn't
I used to walk a cairn terrier who wasn't yappy, but apart from that I have no experience of any of the breeds
 
IME most terriers are yappy, it seems to come with the territory! Poodles are surprisingly sweet, but do require grooming and the others have the wiry coat you didn't seem as keen on in your previous post.

No experience of min.pins.
 
I would agree that most terriers (and in general most small dogs) are yappy.
Poodles, Norwich and Cairn Terriers take alot of grooming, as do Westies which can suffer with dreadful skin problems.

No real experiance of Min Pins and Chihuahuas though.
 
The two min. pins. I have met are the yappiest horrid little things I have ever met! (They are cute though!)
Chihuahuas are yappy and my friends C is an aggressive little sod.
Get a Border Terrier.

Well this is going to sound wierd coming from me, but............if I was to have a little dog, it would be a bichon frise

, they are class little dogs, fab out going little characters, very playful, clever little dogs, well made and can walk as far as u need them to and they have plenty of energy and are very loving, the only down side is they need regualr grooming/clipping and they get dirty quickly

cairn terriers are pretty active little dogs but like all terriers can be a devils if pampered and spoilt and a little strong willed, otherwise hardy and fun.
Chihuahuah's are temperamental little things and more like a cat than a dog or should I say rat

and sort of attach themselves firmly to their main pamperer, not very hardy and I cannot see them jumping....well anything

I would not have a westi, have only ever met 2 nice ones, they can be little feckers, and have their fair share of bad skin and dietry issues, they are fiesty little dogs, but then saying that they are just as active and can be as nice as the next dog in the right hands, we rehome loads, not a dog I would ever own.
Poodles are very very clever little dogs and again tend to cling to the main pamperer, they are very agile and fab at agility and love to run and exercise given the chance, they can be bossy little buggers, they like their home comforts.
Again pampered ones can be snappy and temperamental.
Pin pins like whippets are not huge fans of the cold and love their home comforts but I think they can be pretty stubborn and a little territorial for a smaller breed but have only met a few so not a good braod description

If u are looking for active, fun and poss agility dog I would not go far past a poodle or bichon

Border terrier. A small dog, but leggy enough for good agility. V friendly and the ones I know aren't at all yappy.
 
Not on your list, but a Lancashire Heeler would fit the wish list. They are a herding breed, not a terrier so not yappy. Do possess a strong working instinct so need firm training but great for mini agility, (I know of some that have qualified in Working Trials), will walk all day and are all round great little dogs.
Out of your list I think the poodle would be the best, in the right hands they are proper dogs, but think you would have to choose carefully, preferably go to a breeder that has proved they can produce dogs with a brain not just a lap dog.
 
Italian Greyhounds are super little dogs but are a little prone to leg fractures. If you are looking at toy breeds I'd be on the look out for slipping patellas, especially if you are keen on agility and four hours exercise per day. I think something like a Border Terrier might be better, very hardy dogs with big characters and heaps of energy.
 
Any dog can be Yappy if you allow it to be!

I think a Patterdale terrier would be great for you. When mine was younger I used to take him riding with the horses, he would always be ahead even when I was cantering as he was so Quick, I could take him out for miles at a time and he would still want more and he could also jump pretty high for a little dog (3ft!). I used to take him out on my bike as well and again he had no problem keeping up. He really would go all day!

Toby is nearly 13 now so has slowed up a little, he still loves long walks/rides though he just takes longer to recover as he gets a little stiff afterwords. Even at the age he is he is still faster then the young lab and still loves to chase/kill Rabbits, squirrels and most importantly Rats.

Yep, I think a patterdale would be ideal for you!

How about a little lurcher - mine is a first cross bedlington Whippet. Stands just 17" at the shoulder ( similar to an italien greyhound). She never yaps, is like a cat around the house. Easy to train. Jumps like a stag. Is super fast. Being a crossbreed she is less likely to have the pedigree problems. And her coat doesn't shed.

I see lots of these dogs as a groomer -

I have had (and still have an older) MinPins - can be yappy indeed. Not something that are huge on big walks, either. Toy poodle, can be yappy - must admit I prefer a miniature poodle (I have one now, and he'd walk and go for ages). He's a bit barky though. He gets in to trouble for that a rather lot. Lots of grooming on poodles unless you're happier to have them kennel clipped (ie short utility type clip which looks cute). Norwich, love their characters. I don't agree that they or cairns require lots of grooming. Handstripped twice a year and a brush now and again so long as they aren't neutered (which ruins the coat). Westies a slightly higher maintenance as many times thru breeding the coats have become too soft for the breed standard. Skin problems are rife. I wouldn't get a chihuahua for the same reasons as a MinPin (though I do love my pins, bless).

Now, I'm not an agility expert - but I do believe that your poodle would be the best bet from your list.

Smaller than a Cairn, but bigger than a Norwich, -- border terrier. Even less demanding re grooming, less yappy than many of the other breeds. Not too bad on teh agility/obedience front - a bit leggier than Norwich so probably better on the jumping. Still, poodle is smaller and could do the job better.

horsecrazy: that dog (patterdale) is absolutely stunning! I don't think I've seen one before, but I like it.
It seems similar to the Cairn and the Norwich, which are my fave looks at the moment.
Border terriers seem popular on here, I'm not a fan though. I don't know what it is really, just never liked them enough to have one
 
I'm glad you posted that as I forgot to google the breed, mainly coz I fell for the patterdale instantly by that picture.
I really like those lancs heelers, I've never even heard of them, but nice little dogs.

There are also dogs called Manchester terriers which are like mini dobermans (I think they look like them anyway)

or what about a whippet? They are small, exercisable, good at agility, and dont require much grooming! plus are very cute!


I was gonna suggest a border but if u dont like them...... then no

westies are sort of like small boxers in terms of inherited and acquired skin diseases, health issues and everything else! although they are very cute, it can be expensive to insure them as a result of the risk

mini poodles are a good idea!
Im with cala in that bichon's can be neat little dogs, but they can also be yappy awful pains in ur a** so.........

lancashire heelers are good dogs, but can have problems with their limbs due to them being a bit shorter in comparison to body size (like corgis and dachsunds etc)

Lol Thankyou, that's my favourite photo of him, hes been shaved since which is why he looks different in the photo's I took yesterday. They really are a great breed if dog and as (I think I am right in saying this - please correct me if I'm wrong) they are not a recognized breed with the Kennel club they tend to be quite cheap. I think Toby cost us £90 but that was 12 years ago, now I think they are around £150.


It may also be worth looking at a Patterdale x Jack Russel or Patterdale x Border Terrier, both of which are great great crosses!
 
The manchester terrier looks like the min pin. What are they like personality wise?
I do like whippets, but they aren't small, or can you get some that are small?
 
If im honest I have only ever met one out of a walk, it is like a slightly chunkier mini pin, and it was ever such a nice dog.
I think like a lot of these breeds they are what you make them...... with training and time etc.
I think they are really pretty little dogs.

I think whippets kind of vary in size, but they are generally quite small, I htink bitches are smaller than dogs.
Cala and Splotchy are the ones to check for that!
 
Just googled, that is soo cute, I love the whole whippet, lurcher, greyhound look.
What sort of size are they? What other breed is about the same size? Because a measurement means nothing to me lol
