The Homework Thread!!!

Really chuffed with Evie tonight. Been for a walk with my friend and her GSD who used to be very dog reactive. He has improved hugely but still doesn't like dogs coming in his face. Today we met someone with 2 dogs, one on a flexi and a black lab off lead, despite his feeble calls the lab totally ignored him and started heading for us. As in the past I put myself and Evie between the labrador (a big male who was approaching with a real tail up attitude) and Bud. It sniffed round her stiff legged but all she did was raise her hackles a bit, until its owner eventually came and removed it. It was only then that my friend pointed out that this had been Evie's bete noire type of dog, and she hadn't had a go at all. :D I am sure it was down to the poor bitch being flooded with in so many labs and lab types at the bbq, so thank you Murphy, Max, Teal, Dylan etc:D

Does he really need to retrieve? Does he not play with ANY toy at all??

Mine for this week is blumming back to basics with lead walking- ginger knobber is pulling a bit to much for my liking!!

On a positive note- walked smack bang into a woman with a collie last night (I think she was hiding in bushes waiting for us!!) I just turned around sharpish and said " this way lets go" and blow me down but he did--- without screaming about the lack of saying hello to said collie.....

Then saw a staff pup at a distance- and went a bit nuts.... oh well cant win em all- YET!!

For no reasons other than our obedience training class :o

...& no. NO toys. Not bones, not balls, not squeaky things - only kongs if they have food in.

I've tried everything that people have suggested, he just doesn't want to do it - which is fair enough, I guess. Just not sure where that leaves us with his training class as an awful lot of his new class seems to focus around scent work and retreiving stuff!

Lol! I get this a lot with Bryony, absolutely NO consistencey in her work! One minutes she's angelic and ignoring the leaping lab from down the road, the next she's going nuts, straining on the end of lead at the dog coming towards her. Although I know she means well, she doesn't have scare the ***** out of people! Especially when it must look like I could quite possibley let go of her lead at any time

If I threw it, he would more than likely look at me with a confused expression on his face and then proceed to run through his beautiful training repatoir of sit, down, paw etc to see what the hell he neede to do to make me go and get the kong full of food and give it to him lol!

If he doesn't retrieve, he doesn't retrieve, there are plenty of other things you guys can do.
Your trainer can suggest alternatives :)

I think you're right, I've tried everything I can.. Tysy no likey chasey games :)

Pahahaha- we need video evidence of this!!!

Floof does that as well, tries to activate the jackpot - sit? down? stand? What about BARK BARK BARK BARK? I WANT MY FOOD NOW BARK BARK BARK BARK.
No you fool, I just want you to sit there quietly......

Evie does the same when I pick up the clicker. I immediately get a twirl, bow, roll over etc before I have a chance to say anything, daft girl.
I agree with CC re Tyson, if he doesn't retrieve/isn't toy motivated there is nothing you can do about it. I had a GSD who was the same, the instructor at agility was totally bemused as she had all toy focussed collies, but eventually accepted that my bitch was happy to work for praise from me.

Ricoh had his first agility lesson today. Started out disastrously, stuck in traffic on the A49 for an hour, he whinged and whinged and whinged, turned out all that stop/starting had made the poor lad need a poo which he finally decided to drop when we were 60 seconds away from arriving. :o

He'd got himself all upset and in a tizzy over doing that but luckily calmed really quickly and did some good work. Not a single howl or lunge at any of the dogs there! :D Great focus, confident over jumps, left and right turns over jumps and the tunnel. Had another worry-wart moment over the A-frame but he got there in the end and finished on a high note with that one.

Homework for the next session is to teach him to be aware of where his back end is, he's very clumsy and disjointed at the moment, have been instructed to do some bizarre exercises with a Yellow Pages to help him out.

We are working on:

Sitting when told to

Leaving when told to (esp bacon rolls!):mad:

Not treating every bloke met as an excuse to scrounge a belly rub

Not howling at loud music :o

Not trying to steal puppies from under owner’s noses :o

Oh, wait – this is my homework. :D :p Especially after a glass of wine. Or a bottle. Maybe two (tis Friday after all) :D

:D NN :p

Well today was much better, don't know if it was the Rescue Remedy or not!

Mixed stuff up for him, came in a different gate, did obedience up on the table to get him working remotely, started walking properly/striding out in heelwork (I was accused of 'mincing' last week :o) and doing actual corners as opposed to big wide circular swoops, he is walking beside me much more smartly and paying attention.
Before I had been kind of bimbling along, looking down, throwing food at him, and he was bored and under stimulated as a result.

A lot more control work today but he is still being a gobby little knobber in certain phases and we really, really need to work on shutting the hell up and looking at me before he is allowed to get stuck in to any of the fun stuff.

This week RECALL- I have told you gobshite that me saying "Dexie come"- means bloody well come, sit at my feet and look at me, not stop wait for me to be within 1m of you before beggaring off again- that is "wait" which is what you also do when I say wait...... I feel the squeeky ball may be worn out this week!!

I am guilty of this. :o I don't mind plodding about but trying to mix it up and keep it exciting is surprisingly knackering. I now have a solution in being able to send him over the agility fences to get him all fizzed up temporarily. :p

Today's lesson: "Do not splat both your paws really hard on Mr Trainer Bloke's nether regions just because he is withholding your Favouritest Ballie Thing Ever, he is not a flyball box and he really won't like that"

:p

Pleased to say the heelwork has really improved.

Hehe CC!!!

Currently trying to teach Pix to fetch. Found an LED light ball and am so happy that Pix can see it! The one thing that I have really missed is being able to throw a ball for her. She keeps looking at me though in a "if you wanted it, why'd you throwed it?!!" way hehe! ;) Am tempted to scent it but not sure. Well shall persevere!!! hehe! :D

Maybe you should explain to him that the region he splatted is probably Mr Trainer Blokes favouritest ballie thing too! :)

I was actually complimented on how Pickle had improved at training this week, hardly any vocal cheer leading and he actually managed to walk to for a few paces. Sit and down not bad now, although his bum still pops up when he is in the down. Funniest thing is when the pups are having a play at the end and he disappears in the middle of a scrum of 3 labrador x Akita litter mates (I know:rolleyes:) and emerges from the midst of them brushing his paws and leaving them all looking slightly bemused. :D

MM what is it about Heelers that they have to supply a running commentary:
D

Pip is doing well in her mixed beginners class and the trainer always choses her to demonstrate something, she cant take her eyes off him and its mutual but he does have a Dobe which might explain it.:D

For homework apart from practising our walking, sitting, down and we have to get them to sit, down & stand at a distance we had to teach a touch trick. This is with a paw and Pip caught on quick and we have got quite cocky and we use a dish which we slide along the floor and get her to run up and touch it with her little paw. The trainer brought his Dobe in to show this trick and Pip was enthralled, she is such an intelligent little dog and a pleasure to teach.

Well we certainly haven't been asked to demonstrate anything. :o In fact at the assessment thing last week the trainee trainer pointedly borrowed every dog but Pickle.
Has Pip shown the Heeler smile yet, Pickle does it to my son but not to me, I am most offended. I think its because N is typically male and plays rough with him and winds him up so Pickle gets really excited when he sees him.

No we havnt seen the LH smile yet, of our last 2 only one Jessie ever did it, when Pip is pleased to see you her ears shoot right back and she launches at you.

She made her first kill yesterday on her 6month birthday, S had shot a pigeon which had fallen in the field, he couldnt find it so came back for Pip,(didnt bother with the Dobes because they would have eaten it before he could get to it). Pip found it and it wasnt dead and she shook it and killed it and then preceded to try and eat it.

YES YES YES, Dylan has finally learnt not to mug everyone :) :) :)

Last 4 months Dylan turned into a looon, I thought we had put a lot of work into manners with him, obviously not. One big thing I hated is he started to jump up at people he met. He is easily paws on shoulder now. So we spun around and walked away when ever he did it. Ben got people at work to fuss him as soon as he sat down. And for the last few days he was let loose in the office again (had to go back on a lead) and didnt jump up. Ben had a Oh S**te moment as the head boss came in, unnannounced and Dylan went bounding over, and sat down looking expectantly...phew.....

Starting agility weekly in a fortnight think he will love it. He can already weave and stop (unlike my supposed gundog lol) hoping his recall might come back now.

How do you stop a lab goosing everyone? My lurcher is the same height but never sticks her nose in a crotch. We have got some monks staying in the cottages at the moment and lab thinks, yay, men in skirts...(((blush)))...thats me and the monks blushing, lab thinks its great.
