The Homework Thread!!!

Kao you need some high value treats, I buy a cooked chicken most weeks and cut up for treats, also buy chipolatas and cook and daughters boyfriend makes a mean livercake. My dogs find it irresistable.

At Pips our Lancashire Heelers training class we had to teach a trick which would win a prize well we taught Pip to ring a bell like they have on hotels receptions desk. Well she had it down to a t and she rang the bell with her foot and then proceeded to run around the hall and my daughters boyfriend had a job to catch her. If she hadnt done that she would have won first prize and she came 2nd to a adult Cocker who did a beautiful roll but sat after adoringly at his owners side.

We have videoed her on the phone and if we can figure how to put it on here we will it just so cute.

I can't afford to buy a cooked chicken for myself let alone the dog lol but I do cook a chicken once a fortnight for tea so I can take the bits off that we won't eat.
I might try to cook some liver treats if I can find the recipe.
She loves primula cheese but too much of it and she gets the skits. So I had been keeping that for dog training day only. Plus if she's distracted by something else she couldn't care about me having the cheese :(
That is a neat trick and sounds just like what Storm would do (the running off after lol).
You could possibly send the video to email or get a USB cable and do it that way. Would love to see it :D

Re the treats, I use the German burger meat stuff with my dog, its called Frickadella - no idea how to spell it, but its not too pricey & he goes mad for it! You can cut it into the teeniest pieces and it lasts forever.

Thanks I'll have a look for it :D
Found a recipe so I suppose I could make it myself but omit out the likes of the onion?
Plus make some for myself, sounds quite nice lol

Also don't feed her before a walk or go training. Sounds harsh but it just means the food comes out of your pocket rather than a bowl and she will work harder for her food. My pup has never really eaten out of a bowl, everything he gets comes from my pockets, a Kong or gets given to him if he is sitting quietly or doing whatever it is I have asked him, he 'activates' any food given to him, if that makes any sense. Even with kibble, you can feed some in a bowl and take a few handfuls out into your pockets from her daily allowance and feed that as a training aid before she has eaten.

Yup already do that, that was the same thing my trainer told me. She does definitely work better when she's hungry. Might need to time walks better tho as even 2 hours after eating there is a noticable difference in her food drive.

When I take the little one out at 7.30 in the morning he hasn't eaten anything since about nine or ten the night before. He of course gets something nice and big a safe amount of time after the walk, but throughout the walk he is getting food from my pockets constantly, for giving me attention, recalling, heeling etc.
For actual structured training class tomorrow, it will be nearly 12 hours between meals so he is mega keen.
It's just imprinting, food comes from me, you only get it when you are paying attention.

New Year, new stuff to work on!

Good stuff:
Was told today that we make 'a lovely picture' in heelwork when I relax
He has a lot more focus/is less distracted
Started hide searches
Did our first long downstay

Not so good stuff:
I've been clicking at completely the wrong time for the dumbell hold, he is spitting it out instead of holding it because I was rewarding the release and not the hold (I have not enough hands :o)
I need to stop lobbing balls into the next country - threw one right out of the field :o
He is still a willful little sod where balls/the sleeve/bite cushion are involved :p

Did a corker today, curlydog heeling beautifully, click, treat, dog drops treat and sends it bouncing off to the right, dives between my legs to get it, sends me sprawling on my arse. :o

oopsie!! My Oh came back completely covered in mud tother day- apparently dex had seen a bunny at just the wrong time, sending him flying!

Currently working on improving recall - he is good 90% of the time but if he sees other dogs playing with tennis balls I have no chance of getting him back:mad:
On a related note I am working on his impulse control.
Also working on "down" (he was really good but is being a princess and refusing to lie down if the ground is cold/wet/muddy )

On the plus side his focus has improved and I think his attention span has improved from gnat-with-ADHD to somewhere in the region of goldfish :D I also felt much better last week at "school" when my instructor pointed out that the vast majority of people with small dogs don't even bother coming to obedience training during autumn/winter.
