The Homework Thread!!!

My pup has been doing this, it's often pushy behaviour, I want food, I want attention, me me me, push push push - I hold a treat (well, I take it out of his daily food allowance) up at my navel or a few inches out from my crotch to encourage him to stop there, not head on in and headbutt me *there* :o or just use a hand/rolled up newspaper or something to block her if you don't want to bribe her.

This weekend we've worked on 1. the white sofa in the rental appartment is off limits, and 2. you really need to indicate if you need to pee 2 minutes after we've just had you out as the rental appartment has cream carpets, and 3. I've no idea how we are ever going to get Harry over the shock of bumping into a zombie on the stair case, or the 6'3" bloke with white cat eye contact lenses in who attempted to give him a cuddle!

R was approached head on by an off-lead dog today that he doesn't know and he did nothing but sniff it, do a little 'woo' of greeting when the dog licked his face and then carried on walking without a fuss. :) No lunging, no screaming.

Next task: reproducing this with his nemesis the rough collie.

D is... well, she's awesome. :p I can send her through a flick-flack with one sweep of my arm and then send her off to something else without moving an inch. Super super proud. If she wasn't currently soaking wet and stinking I'd kiss her. :o

My mum adopted a new cat at the weekend. :o

Yes, will try that, but getting the monks to do it! Still, if we start with family and then progress...

I take it back, the little shite lunged at a black lab this evening. Obviously he was on lead and I hauled him back mid-air, still earnt me a dirty look. Disappointed in myself really as when he saw the dog he stopped, sat by my leg and looked up expectantly, as taught, only I didn't have any bloody treats on me so he went back to looking at the dog.

Now being a very effective foot warmer so I will forgive him.

We are starting from scratch the being brave outside after a delightful little yob threw fireworks at us when out for a walk, we have managed as far as Tue garden but any noise and he shoots straight back in and up to his bed :(

Stop grabbing food/ball out of my hand, your teeth are much bigger and sharper than they used to be.

Stop pretending to be deaf when there is an interesting scent on the ground.

LEAVE YOUR BLOODY WILLY ALONE!!!

- But apart from that, we've had a good day :p

Thou must not hump the grumpy rescue collie, or anything for that matter,
Rolling in decomposing deer guts is a definite no no,
The bath in the tack room is for horses water buckets not for swimming dogs,
Biting me on the nose is not the kiss that I asked for,
Cold callers selling telephone products are public enemy no1 (I think I dont need to work on this one as Harry has it spot on).

LEAVE YOUR BLOODY WILLY ALONE!!!

:D

Feeling a bit  today, MIL said last weekend that she much preferred R over D because he was so affectionate, calmer and generally more 'good'. Happened to see my mother yesterday and she came out with the exact same thing. Have just interrogated OH and he says he vastly prefers R.

Poor Daxy-snoot. :( She's a bit more hyper but at least she doesn't scream at passing dogs!

Agility tomorrow, more object discrimination for D and working on sending into the weaves at greater distance, she has developed an annoying habit of entering on the wrong side when I hang back and send her on.

Almost everyone prefers Floofy to B. He is a happy chappy, and entertainer and more biddable, whereas B is huge, smells bad, and is a bit aloof with some people. I don't care, I wouldn't be doing anything or be involved with the things I am now, if it wasn't for him, he is my speyshul dog!!!! And to be honest the constant hyperactivity is a bit of a pain, I prefer B's morose outlook :p

R is ridiculously vocal, smells bad (pees on his front legs), is a complete wuss and throws himself screaming at passing dogs. It's only because he attempts to slink onto the sofa with MIL and will, if allowed, lie with his head pressed up under your chin in a complete full-body snuggle.

D is not cuddly in the slightest, will occasionally lie pressed up against my legs but that's about it. She is, however, pleasantly fragranced, reliable with other dogs and a great deal smarter. :p As you say, if she hadn't been A Bad Dog we wouldn't have done half the interesting things we've done.

Educate the mother -CLASSIC head desk

Brilliant:D:D:D

Had to take Pip to the vet this week and told the vet she was on the raw diet the vet said well done thats the best thing for her. The last vet on being told this asked why she is not a wolf.

Henry. When I recall you in class, it is not acceptable to go and sit neatly in front of Aunty S. just because she has the yummy fish treats that I have thus far been unable to source. Nor, when she ignores you in the hope of getting her own dog back, is it acceptable to start bouncing up and down on the spot level with her face, Henry!

Floof has been recalling beautifully ever since we had a bit of a row on Wednesday night and he got thrown in the car and taken straight home :p
Buuuut...now he has started swinging his arse out when heeling...ARGGHHH can we have two things go right at the same time, pleeeease......

At first I wondered if the daft sod had the two of us confused as we were standing near to each other and dressed similarly, but when the bouncing started I realised that it was not so...:rolleyes:

TYSON RETRIEVED SOMETHING!!!!!!!!!!

Not only did he retrieve something, but he did it more than once! I wound him him to **** by teasing him with a raggy, pully toy thing... slapping him round the face with it and then not letting him have it :D then I lobbed it and he hooned after it, had a wrestle then brough it half way back! Did the same thing again, lots of winding him up then threw it and off he went!! Only this time he brought it ALL the way back..ish

This was a few days ago. Haven't tried it again since, don't want it to just have been a one off :p:p

Homework for Baxterina is stop F-ing pulling me you ignorant *****e!
I took him to see a trainer friend a few weeks ago for some heelwork tips and he said he was one of the hardest dogs he had worked with for heelwork! *gulp*

He is starting to understand that throwing himself to the end of the lead isnt getting him anywhere, but still willfully ignores the OH on the matter.

Also MUST buy a long line and start whistle training for recall - he doesnt bugger off per se but definately comes in his own time :D

Once we have these cracked I might even be able to start doing some dummy retrieves and getting him working a bit (rabbit skin for xmas anyone?!)

Pendlehog I just bought 10m of strong builder's cord from the hardware shop for £6 and a trigger clip rather than buy another long line/lunge line/tracking line to ruin. It's only going to get dragged through the mud anyway!!! And it is working really well :) and chicken mince in the pockets. I have seriously gone off chicken....

Just in case my SS is stalking me, I'd really really like another one of these leads in black. :p

Excellent day today, Ricoh did the see-saw all by himself, got a round of applause. :o He is still terrified and tries to grip the sides but no longer shrieks and throws himself off it.

D a superstar as usual except for the weaves, she is still trying to enter on the wrong side (why?!). Mock competition is going to be arranged in the next few weeks so need to work on that a lot.

Got attacked by mum's new cat. Literally attacked, ******* thing bit me HARD.

Not sure if I've ever put anything on here for Storm so here goes. She's now 17 weeks old. :)

What we are trying to learn:

Not to jump up on people. (she jumped on a nicely dressed lady and I got into trouble :()
We've been working on this for about 2 months but then you get my OH who ignores me when I tell him to turn his back on her when she jumps, instead he claps her. Then he moans when he's all clean dressed to go out and she jumps all over him.

Not to pee everywhere when excited. Not easy to get people to ignore the cute puppy. Then she pees on their shoes or feet :p

Not to pull on the lead. I've always been crap at being consistent with heel work. Storm just gets so easily distracted too, so she'll heel for a treat, then pull off to the front, come back to heel for another treat etc etc. If I withhold the treat even for a few seconds she gets bored and pulls off to the front.

Not to play tug of war with the lead whilst we're walking.

Not to stalk and lunge at cars when they go past.

What she has learned:

Finally she has clicked to ask to go out to the toilet. She jumps and shoves the door. Still have the odd accident, but its huge strides. She has been a nightmare to toilet train. She'd hold it in when outside and then sneak off as soon as she got in the house.

She does a very good down and emergency down. Sit, come, wait, touch (she touches with her feet tho not her nose, seen my dog trainer doing this with her collie), crawl, high 5, bang your dead, roll over, stick em up and bed.
Any ideas on other tricks to teach would be great. She loves learning the tricks and I love teaching them. Never had a dog catch on so quick before. Shame she's not catching on to the things I've listed at the top :p

Kao if she is a quick as that, look into clicker training, I was one of those people who thought 'I can do with my voice what I can do with a clicker' but for young dogs, a clicker is the way, the marking of good behaviour is instant and it does not transmit frustration, tiredness, slowness to react, as our voices would.

You can use it for tricks AND control.

TBH I would swap the trick training, she can learn and get reward and have fun from learning basic manners in the same way as she learns to sit and down, if you think about it like manners are also like tricks, not 'hard work'.
Esp pulling and lunging, you need to crack that now when she is small, as when she is bigger obviously, it will be harder.

You NEED to be consistent in heelwork and she will thank you for it, now you are just confusing her. Coming for a treat and then pulling off again? Don't LET her do that and make sure your equipment is correct. The introduction of a FREE command is great here.

Find what food and toy does it for her and get her working on focus, if you type focus training into the search bar, you will find lots of long and boring posts from me.
Once you have focus, everything else will be easier to train :)

We've been doing clicker training in class but TBH I'm quicker with my voice than I am fumbling round with a clicker lol or I forget I have the clicker or I click at the wrong time.
Tried looking for focus training but nothing came up. I've been using 'look' and when she looks up at me she gets a treat. But if there's something more interesting as in another dog, a leaf blowing about or another person, she looses it and ignores me.
I've been using a water bottle and squirting her with it when she grabs the lead or jumps at cars. Seems to be working, only used it for 3 walks so far and by the 3rd walk she wasn't trying to grab to lead. I think the cars might take a bit longer. Tried distraction with the lead and cars with treats and a toy but nothing was working there. The short sharp shock of the water seems to work tho.
She isn't overly food or toy orientated either. Well not that I've been able to find a food or toy she's so keen on, nothing else matters.
Teaching the tricks I can do it in the house where she's able to fully concentrate.

I have 1 of these

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Halti-Dog..._Dogs&var=&hash=item6fc2b35ea9#ht_1728wt_1139

looks the same as the 1 you posted about but cheaper :p certainly the 1 I have is padded and sturdy

Dex is back on a long line- we seem to have grown in confidence over the field and keep buggering off into the bushes- not ideal in the dark/dusk/EVER. He has always been so good with recall and me telling him which way we are going but now he seems to have forgotten that I blumming feed him........

Last night got tangled in something as when he finally came out of the bush was covered in cuts and grazes- and had lost another set of lights- grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Oh and salt water is NOT for frigging drinking you wally!
