I have the same unruly armTurns out I have an unruly right arm so it was confined to my pocket until I can learn to control it
I have to hide mine behind my back as pocket means treats

Sorry to derail this thread a bit but I've entered a show tomorrow and there's about 45 dogs in the ring before me. How much time would you leave from the start time? The few shows I've done so far we've been in as one of the first ones so don't have much experience with the timings! Thanks!

Honestly I usually get there about 30-60mins before judging starts for the day and set myself up ringside but my dog doesn't bench well and I like to have a spot with the show trolley and chairs.

That's what I did the last few times but I'm hoping to have a slightly shorter day since I'm only bringing the one dog and leaving the others at home! It's actually the Deise show (Co.Waterford) so not a big one and hopefully we'll still have a nice little spot to set up for the short while we will be there!

If you know entry stats for breeds have a look at Kilkenny today and see how many absentees were on the list for those breeds. Will help you out!

Sorry I didn't respond! Thanks we had a great day! Got there at 10 and they started a bit late (about when I arrived) so ended up in at almost 12.30 but better early than late! Got his green star and BOB and also 3rd in junior stakes so lots of happy tail wags! Enjoy my fab photography skills

I am dabbling in a bit of showing with my golden retriever (he’s not really a show boy but all good fun and practice) next show im going to enter class ‘golden retriever junior’ and there is a ‘av gundog junior’ (not avnsc, there is a separate class for that) and a ‘av sporting junior stakes’ class.
Would you enter either/both of these classes too? Can anyone explain what the ‘stakes’ classes are?

Av gundog junior is likely to be put on for people chasing their JW points, especially numerically small breeds
Stakes are seperate entirely from breed judging and usually have small cash prizes as they are sponsored. You'd be eligible for special beginners unless you've won a CC previously?

Ahh so would you not really bother entering av gundog junior? We are not chasing JW points
There is no special beginners at this show, we are at a show on Saturday and entered that as well as golden retriever junior

Our first Champ show today, came away with a first, second and third 
We also got some words of wisdom from the judge outside the ring which was lovely. Annoyingly, he's perfect to warm up and at training but I need to play around with what works in the ring as on the group movements he's far too interested in the other dogs and doesn't listen
He was better by the second class but going to try to get to lots more open shows to play with what works.

When reading a critique, what would a ‘good outlook’ be referring to? Temperament?

I think I’d interpret it as a generally good attitude in the ring , calm but showing well .

We had reserve best of breed at an open show last weekend, hilariously beating my friend's two times Crufts best of breed. The mane must have grown back in the interim.

I’ve been trying to keep a record of all the critiques I can find of him. He’s still quite young so they have varied over time
We had a RBOB at an open show a little while ago then a 4th in the RBOB stakes, I was gobsmacked
it was the first time we’d ever even beaten one other dog in the ring let alone many

Some critiques are laughable and can be cosigned to the bin, some are much more useful. I felt bad for my poor handler at Crufts this year who was mentioned in my lad's critque on terrier day "Lovely dog let down by handler" is a bit withering

I was always told you should be able to picture the dog from the critique. Some judges are just lazy with their sparse write ups .

I'm still waiting for critiques for our last few shows. The only I could find for a show we did in April shows him placing first and being a lovely old English Sheepdog.....he placed 4th and is a vallhund

Today's star of the day, with a massive "wow" factor, is a harmoniously constructed, striking Black & Gold female of excellent breed type. She possesses a super head and expression, with great reach of neck flowing into a strong, firm back and a well-laid croup of good length. Her front assembly is excellent, featuring a well-angled, long upper arm, strong bones, and correct feet and pasterns. She showcases excellent hindquarters with a correct turn of stifle and short, strong hocks, demonstrating sound movement coming and going. In motion, she displays a far-reaching gait, maintaining her shape and drive throughout the competition phases. This female could undoubtedly compete anywhere in the world, and it was my pleasure to award her the CC and Best of Breed. Congratulations to owner, handler and **** herself for a composed, assured performance in the group ring.
