I was walking Charlie in hand today (still on box rest) and a couple turn up in a car, get out with 2 large dogs, proceed to walk them around the XC course, get back in the car and drive off! Its a XC course, not a public park!

Cheeky Buggers

We took Millie to a hunter trial last week (her first one). She had been round the course twice and as we got back to the trailer a man (complete stranger) with his daughter walked over and said 'I hate to be cheeky but would you mind if my daughter had a sit on your pony and you lead her round for a bit.' I was so shocked, I think they only 'choose' her as she was the smallest pony there.

I 'politely' said no although everyone I was with said for comedy reasons we should have let said child ride her, she doesn't like small, strange children and as she was bareback (saddle was whipped of as soon as she got back to box) I think child would have lasted 3 seconds before being sent into orbit

Reminds me of when our dog decided to do a squidgy poo in the long grass outside our field gate, so I was politely chatting to the dog saying how inconvenient it was for him to poo in the long bit as I cleared it up, when a man with a large labrador walked up and said 'Oh I wouldn't bother picking that up my dog always poos there and I never pick it up' To which I replied that actually as we have to strim the long grass in the verge and clear the ditch as it's our field it's not a very pleasant job when there's poo in it! Exit one embarrased gentlemen rapidly in direction of park and doggie poo bins!

I remember winter 2008 at my friend's yard that I used to work at, flooded due to all the rain we had causing the nearby ford to overflow. The lane leading up to her stables was flooded as was the paved yard.

I was busy trying to get stuff done in the yard ankle deep water when some idiot rambler and his moron wife came walking up the raised grass verge than runs along the lane and ends at the stables. The guy whips out his willy while I'm standing there and promptly takes a p*ss in the flood water beside the gate to the yard where I'm standing.

I was like "do you mind, I've got to walk in this" and they just looked at me and walked away!!!

Mum got delayed chatting to a neighbour whilst turning the horses out in the orchard the other day, and so she was still in the gateway when a car pulled up and a couple jumped out and bold as brass started filling bags with pilfered apples.

With much myrth the neighbour asked them why they were taking the apples and whether they any permission from the landowner- to which they replied that they had a catering function on but forgot to buy apples for the desert and that they 'didn't need permission because the landowner wouldn't notice them missing'

Sadly Mum wasn't bold enough to introduce herself

I took my 13.2 to an SJ comp many years back and after I had been placed in one of the classes a girl walked up and asked if she could take him in clear round

I was so

Constantly at shows we get people walking up and asking if their small child can sit on pony or stroke pony.......I feel like answering only if you dont mind her arm being bitten off but politeness somehow stops me......it really narks me though, people wandering around showground petting all the ponies....thats how diseases can get spread around surely
confused.gif

It was worse when we had the small shettie.....small pony=small kid magnet.....

I'm sure it happens quite often, and can't really see why people would object to be honest.

I would object if a dog popped up on the other side of the fence....as I was about to land on it

Possible, but not probable. I love to see people enjoying these spaces together. And as long as the dog is either on a lead or within the owners recall really see no problem.

When did we become a nation of old misery guts??
grin.gif

I keep my two in a National Trust Park in London so there are loads of dog-walkers and families walking past constantly. People always ask to stroke and ride the horses. I don't mind people stroking Zoom since she is so lovely and tolerant and the same with Monty...........apart from when he's eating!
blush.gif

He kicks when he has his grub and people constantly let their children come running over! It annoys the crap out of me
frown.gif
Also. I am very accomadation about people petting Zoom and let them hug and take photos of her, but when they ask to ride her I always say no for obvious reasons! I always say she is too naughty and fizzy to be ridden by children.........which is true! But people get really offended and huff at me
confused.gif

WTF?! They are MY horses, why do people think I should let every Tom, Dick and Harry jump on for a ride!

Too bad we don't still have black blister to hand for situations like this.

Charming......I dont see myself as a misery guts, and I have no objection to people walking their dogs and keeping them under control.........perhaps my view is coloured by the arsehole woman who refuses to keep her dog on a lead, and which doesn not return to her when called but prefers to leap out of the undergrowth or charge at me from accross a field......my daughter has fallen off her pony because of this and I've had a few near misses.....

.....not everybody behaves as you think they should, and to my mind a xc course is that...if I were to gallop along a designated 'dog-walking' course no doubt I'd have my wrist slapped.

I think you've got every right to feel cheesed off Poppymoo if this is your frequent experience of working in that particular area.

But I do think that on the whole we horse riders make far too much fuss about what others are doing, rather than just accepting that we can all happily rub along together.

Actually- I think horse riders in general are extremely restricted to where we can ride without people complaining....so to my mind a XC course...for horses......should be just that
confused.gif

If you think about it many roads are too busy to safely hack on, pavements are a no-no, as are public spaces such as parks and footie pitches......the woods where I ride are filled with dog-walkers, bike-riders and off-road motorbikes......I dont think its too much to ask for somewhere that is supposed to be for horse-riding be kept for that, without having to watch out for people who really are not supposed to be there......

We get dog walkers on our XC course. As long as the dogs are under control then we're more than happy to have them there, it's lovely to see happy dogs and puppies bounding about, and the people always stop for a chat. I bumped into a bloke who had the same rare breed of dog that we did, which was really lovely.

As I say, they don't go on if there is a competition, stay out the way when there are lessons, and keep dogs under control. Most liveries bring their dogs to the yard, keep them in the car whilst mucking out then take the dogs for a walk round the field.

Nah, she just opens a thread uses a daily-mail (or Sun, I have yet to work out which is of preferred taste) o-matic, posts and then leaves. The post could be about dogs on XC courses or dead goldfish, the response is always the same.

Here, this is what I think (s)he uses:

As I say, it might be more sun, as the posts have less actual (if misinformed) points, and more just irrelevant bizarre points, which makes me think Sun.

Not horsey, but related.

I had something similar when I was racing cars. A driver who had crashed in the clubmans race I was in, also wished to race in a National round at the same track on the same day. He came up to me and said' your car looked to be going well in that last race, do you mind if I use it in the National race?"
shocked.gif

I was (almost) lost for words, but declined his kind offer of 'petrol money'. He persisted until I got a bit miffed and reminded him of his performance in the less demanding clubmans race 'no need to get nasty' was his departing shot.

Whilst nobody has ever asked to ride K (I suspect it is because he is quite big), I actively encourage people to stroke or pat him. I like to think it is good horsey PR as so many people seem to think we are all stuck up snobs.

Can't imagine why that might be...

have had several people ask to put their small children on SWA (11.2 sec A) and get really nasty when i politly say no & explain that he has BIG ISSUES and will without doubt buck their little one to pluto and back. one blokes response was "hold him tighter then but my daughter wants to sit on him so let her" respose was almost polite and did invlove the details of local riding school (eventually

I agree with you on that one. When I am hacking I will always stop and let the children stroke the horses if they want, or just to have a polite conversation with walkers that I am passing.

When I said that the child couldn't ride Millie I did say to her that she was welcome to give her a pat, I just had to warn her to stay away from her teeth and her hind legs which I think put her off slightly

Me too...just in case you were all thinking I was a miserable so-and so.....I remember what it was like to want a pony and not have one

...I am just very cautious with the young one because he has been known to nip when its all a bit much for him....

...I say thankyou to the dog-walkers that keep their dogs under control, I chat to the kids on their bikes and the ones up trees that I only notice at last minute

I get it on the beach when I take the pony alongside my horse - with my kid on board. People asking how much for their kid to ride the pony and gettign iffy when I tell them the insurance just does not allow for that. It's a very good excuse.

However I do make exceptions for little ones with learning disabilities - but the big lad is tied to the box first so I can give them and the pony 100% attention. My kids have grown out of so many hats I always have a spare or three in the box. And my pony is 500% reliable and really knows his job. he does the school fair every year with his gig and gives hundreds of kids rides.

But it is a slippery slope - if you give one a go...

What pees me off though is people stopping a tthe side of the road and feeding the horses - despite a sign up. They are almost always very well intentioned, but I do need to know what my horse has eaten.

I never let anyone apart from my family ride my orse - but one day in the woods we came across a lady and her partner - the lady had gone down a rabbit hole when joggin and her ankle was huge, blue and purple and very sore indeed. Her partner and I helped her up onto my horse and I walked her down to the car park - soem 4 miles away. She was delighted becuase she had never been on a horse before and had no idea they were just so nice!

I have never had anyone ask to ride my horse, but I guess he isn't a pony so I suspect that would be why. Have had a few people at work ask and I just laugh and say "well, if you'd like to end up in Wiltshire...!" that usually puts them off!

I remember being that little girl that always wanted to pat or stroke someones horse, I so desperately wanted one of my own! I also think, you never know, I might inspire the next great eventer!!
