This breeding...!?

A friends D had the same grandsire on both sides... not the best put together animal, but he remained amazingly sound throughout his life considering.

I only have the dams side of Millie’s breeding- from memory there is Nebo Magic, Chancerie King flyer and Thorneyside The Boss in there.

There is a breeder of grey shetlands who is line breeding for grey. Their foals in the last few years go:

Brother x sister
Mother x son
Father x daughter
Father x daughter x grand daughter

I did look into them as I am wanting a grey colt but I won't touch them with a 50million foot barge pole now I have seen how closely related they all are just so they all stay grey.

Grey is very limited in shetlands but not exclusive to that line.

Dave has a few repeats too.

I've just looked at my WelshD - he has Nebo Black Magic in his 5th line (so his great, great, great grand line) SIX times :O
I'm amazed that he is as sane as he is!

can I ask what you mean by your final line please? is this line ie NBM known for being not sane?

My boy is Welsh and Mathrafal turns up 7 times and Cahn Dafydd 6 times. Brenin Daffyd is his great grandsire on both sides and grandsire on 1. No nebo lines though!

Years ago I worked on an Arab stud and there were deformed foals as a result of line breeding.
I didn’t want to like your post as it not a nice situation, but there is an Arab stud near me my friend works at and some of the foals of the last few years have had seriously deformed heads ?

I had a Derwen Welsh D and most of those are very very closely bred. He had NBM twice in his lines and was a majorly loon but stunning to look at
I had a nutty Derwen horse too, I did love him though ?

That said my Welsh is probably as nutty as they come, and as above, no NBM at all ?

I don't think it's a co-incidence that Ds have a reputation for being quirky and most of them have NBM in their breeding somewhere! I was lucky, my old boy (NBM was his grandsire) was very excitable but didn't have the neurotic streak a lot of Welshies have. He had a lot of Llanarth blood though, they tend to be slightly less nutty.

Some of those extreme heads make you wonder how they can breathe at all.

I tried so hard to leave this but hey ho...

I own two Arabs and one has much more of a seahorse head than the other. The more seahorsey is the one who'd pedigree I linked to on here and as everyone can see he has some pretty serious halter bred Arabs in his pedigree. I've owned him from a yearling, I bought him from his breeder and have foal photos. He has no trouble breathing and has excellent teeth. If I wasn't such a crock he would have been an excellent endurance horse.

Now do I think that horses should be bred to have more extreme heads - no I do not. A simple fix would be to remove the 'best head' prize at halter shows around the world and replace with 'best legs'. Any Arab that isn't 'pretty' enough to be a World class show horse should be able to do a ridden or driving job instead. The breed should always retain the desert toughness that made it in the first place.

I personally don't do any of the clipping and oiling that makes their heads look more extreme as I think it looks awful. I'd be quite happy to see that banned Worldwide and have the horses presented more naturally (and calmly) like you see in the Crabbet classes over here.

You beat me to it with the derfomed head comment! I am not a fan of the sea horse heads that are seen in the show ring today, I love the crabbets they are proper riding horses and are in my opinion much more versatile.

I have a very typey Arab he does have a wave mouth but he breathes fine and has been a lovely riding horse for me, and yes leg confo is not always there strong point but there are still some great examples of Arabs out there.
