This is a great idea for the winter, The Hay Hutch

It is a good idea but the problem for me I think would be that the horses/ponies won't eat so close together in some cases. I think Belle would chase the ponies off in which case, we would need 2 (and then are looking at £200). Then maybe Cookie would chase Cosmo off as well... then we would need 3. :p

I do like the idea though!

Bought one last year. Large one between 3 horses which are out 24/7 (will be 4 this year), holds 2 small bales of hay and fill up once every 1/2 days, some waste but no where near as much as if feeding on the floor. No more struggling with hay nets Love mine!!!

I have one and it doesn't work when you have a dominant feeder who won't let the others near the thing! I find tractor tyres work just as well and are a lot cheaper - free, in fact.

I have 4 of the medium sized ones, bought this size as they are easier to move around and can then give 3 horses 2 hutches to avoid any of them being chased off the hay. They have been worth evert penny, I can't stand seeing expensive hay being trampled into the muddy ground, nor do I expect my horses to eat out of mud. Another advantage is that I can put hay out at night ready for turning out the next morning and so save precious time before work.

I can see that it would be OK for one or two horses, but it would be as much good as a chocolate fireguard for me, unless I had 3 or 4 in a paddock. My horses, the mares in particular don't do sharing nicely.

I do like the fact that they are mobile. I wonder though, how they would hold up to really cold temperatures, would they shatter if kicked?
Also I don't like the top, in -25C the last thing I want to be doing is fighting with a frozen on lid in a blizzard, not for me, but I know that lots of people are very pleased with them.

I just use these, they hold a 750lb round bale just fine with plenty of room for mares to bicker and move around.

If I got feeders then I'd splash out on these:

I won't have metal feeders. I have seen two particularly horrendous leg wounds on foals just this summer caused by ring feeders, tombstone style, supposedly horse safe - but then, despite all care and thought, I don't think anything is 100% horse safe is it?

In principal I think they look a great idea, and having a lid saves hay being blown away in high winds, but I would like to know how they cope in extremes of temp, or even if they are affected by being left out in strong sun for a long time, as this can weaken plastic as well as the cold.

Oh no dont like them at all, the holes dont look big enough for their heads to gets into. Knowing my lot i would have three horses with scars all over the faces. I think the ideas people have used on here are much better than these and i bet alot cheaper !!

They are not suppose to put their head into the holes!! they work like a tissue box i.e. when the horse pulls some hay out, it pulls some more out for the next mouthful. Also the plastic is said to be the same they use on motorway barriers and able to withstand extremes of temperature - I suppose time will tell if that is true.

I have a medium which has 3 access holes and I use it for my 2. It holds approx a small bale.

Love it:D Almost no waste at all. There is enough room for 2 horses to feed and share without argy bargy. Easy to move. Easy to fill. Keeps the hay dry and in one place. My two can access every scrap of hay - the bottom fills with the chaffy bits and all the good stuff stays on top.

So far no injuries and I will not say it is impossible, but I cannot see anywhere they can injure themselves or get stuck. And it is holding up really well to the elements.

Recommended:D

I also have 2 of the medium sized ones and think they are great! I got mine last year and they held up to gale force winds and minus 13 degrees no problem. I have 5 horses which incs 2 foals and they all share fine. Great things in my opinion!

I can't see how the horse can get all the hay out of it? Surely there will always be some left in the bottom.
Don't like tombstone metal feeders.
The other big plastic one looks good.
Ther tractor tyre idea is just a little bit of genius :D

I'm looking for something similar for my stable, but can't afford a hutch :( and haven't got anywhere to attach a haybar easily :(
Might try the tyre idea though!! Thanks!!! :D

The bottom of it quickly fills with seeds and chaffy bits and the good hay sits on top. Believe me mine get every scrap.

They do not blow around due to the wide base and the fact that they are quite heavy.

I am not on commission and have no axe to grind:) but would honestly say they are brilliant and I love mine. My friend feeds her 2 the same amount of hay loose on the ground and it takes my 2 much much longer to eat theirs so it last well too.

I have two large ones in the barn with 6 horses for the winter. They are brilliant. They have saved me a huge amount of wasted hay and haylage and they really do eact it all. i can get away with filling them every other day and it makes them eat a little more slowly, thus less chance of overeating or choking!

I have a medim one and hummed and hawwed due to my highland being a dominant so and so. She chases the little one away and then a minute or so later, she has herself positioned where she wants and then Fidley gets in. They shared without too much grumbling and I have very little wastage.
My yard had these last year and they all coped brilliantly with the weather etc.

The only both I have with it, is the screw on lid. The give you a nut and wing so that if your horse is able to get the top off, you can get it so they can't. Trying to get this on in the middle of winter is a no-no to me so the lid is off most nights but it does the job I require - no haynets needed and no wastage.

Tilly nudges the lid with her nose until it's at the right angle and then her hoof comes up and bats the lid off :/

I think that Samba and my boyfriends cob would just get peeved with it and kick the s&*t out of it to be honest. They dont have the patience. They do with the snak ball thing they have, she jumps on it.

The idea is that they cant get their heads in in case they get stuck. I've seen them in action first hand as I live by where they make them. They are very good, dont break easily at all.

Can recommend them
