I rescued a mare nearly 2 years ago, she was 3 at the time ( previously trotted unbroken at 6 months by gypsies) , i was told she would be a lovely mare who was cooperative and a 'quick learner' was told but not shown that she would happily have a saddle on her back and was an angel to lunge. when i got her to the new yard she would not lunge or anything. now two years on i am trying to break her in and start schooling it started badly as she would fly kick and refuse to move. we went back to basics but she started to get more and more stubborn, when i now try and ride her she rears, bucks, fly kicks, rolls and bronks with the slightest squeeze i do not physically touch her with the whip when i ride as she gets more and more agitated even the sound of the whip makes her rear ( i have tried riding with and without) she has been gastroscoped, she has had nerve blocks, spinal xrays, xrays on all 4 legs and a bone scan all coming back clear, really running out of ideas. has anyone got any tips or new ideas of what i could try with her?

Without knowing you, it sounds like your pretty inexperienced with the breaking-in process? I would suggest you go to a recommended professional and start her from scratch.

I have broken in quite a few horses quite successfully and have had 2 'professional' riders try with her with no sucess.

Did the professional riders you used have any suggestions as to why she behaved that way?
Could be psychological due to abuse she received as a foal but she used to move forward nicely, my initial post i agree isnt written very well and my knowledge does come across as limited but i assure you it is not. The professionals weren't sure about how to overcome psychological issues but i am not sure how psychological the issues could be seen as she used to move forward nicely?

Would she lead off another horse.

She will follow another horse round happily copying everything they do, but i don't like her doing this as she does not actually listen to me at all any aids i give she ignores and just naps and follows. tried this once or twice but thought it is only teaching her bad manors and she is not actually listening to my aids which is what i need her to do

Wow you must have spent thouands checking this horse out!! How does she work on the lunge or long lines?

Hmm, maybe if she did move forward nicely to begin with then something may have triggered it? I think some horses just don't like whips, so I wouldn't force the issue of that. But when you squeeze she starts to misbehave? Can you ride her on the lunge and practice walking and halting keeping you legs on her at all times, de-sensitising her to it a little bit?

Yeah i'm not sure what though, yeah i know she doesnt like the whip so i dont want to focus on that as an issue. Yes any aid from a tiny squeeze causes her to misbehave, i have been riding her on the lunge and she behaves so much better and she will walk and trot and is alot better its just when there is nobody on the ground, and i dont always have somebody around to lunge her whilst i ride

Hi,

This sounds really tricky, and if you can take a video of this happening and post it, I think people would be able to help out with more.
