I'm having a bit of an issue with some posts that have been on here recently. People seem to think that the more time and money you spend on your horse the better horse person you are!

I'm talking about posts that insinuate people are a bit rubbish if they:

Don't look after their horse themselves 24/7 (NB - OP always works HOURS but manages to fit it in)

Don't ride everyday and compete/hunt (NB - as above)

Don't spend hundreds of pounds on the latest rugs/tack/boots/feed

Just a few examples....question is - if horse and owner are happy, then what is it anyone else's business??

I'm sure you know the kind of post I'm on about - they normally start "I can't believe half the people on my yard, they......."

Live and let live people!!

I agree, if a horse is happy and healthy who gives a sh!t what you do or dont do with it, or how much you spend on it or if you or someone else turns it out in the morning.

*shock horror*

my pony languished in its field for days on end....

and often I used leadropes made from plaited baler twine...

rugs? never had any? feed? huh?

my poor neglected pony

But I love my horses and they are feed warm and happy and dont care where there rugs came from!! or what im wearing. People are soooooooo materialistic

Well, I'm obviously a cr@p owner then. OK they're on DIY, but I get the kids to see to them in the mornings, I muck them out at some stage during the day and bring them in late afternoon, their rugs come from either ebay or the local tack shops mega sale, they are only ridden once or twice during the week and at weekends if the weathers OK. Guess what, the ponies seem very happy with their lot... Oh, and I'm so bad and neglectful, they only get shod every 7 weeks which must make me a really bad owner. Shoeing interval was decided by the farrier by the way.

I know the sort you mean by the way, I used to work with a woman like her, whe was always popping out of the office to go and faff with her horse's stable at the yard round the corner from the office. By the way she never actually rode the horse, God only knows what she used to do, there's only so much bed fluffing anyone can get up to. Still she was the boss so it was her prerogative I suppose.

Don't worry, I manage on my 20 yr old massive GP saddle that was my dads hand me down when he packed in riding!

bale twine is the most amazing tool!!! It can fix everything!! Someone had forgotten their curb hunting the other day - so they made one out of bail twine!

And haynets made from baler twine, tis very easy to make one.
And fillet strings made from baler twine.

I do think the horsey world have a habit of sticking their noses into other peoples lives.

What posts? And anyway, who cares? Leave them to it and you get on with doing your best for your horses.

I tried that with my share horse once - he gave me a very disapproving look!

My grandfather has held his trousers up with baler twine for the past 30 decades.....not the same pair, I hasten to add. He really is at the cutting edge of agricultural haute couture, a sartorial inspiration.

I think the problem is anthropomorphism....people think 'I'd hate to be out in the rain, so my horse must hate it too' or whatever. I try to do what makes my horses happy and contented, but what suits me too...
If you asked a horse what it wanted, I think it would list herd company, freedom to be outside and behave normally, lots of forage...and freedom from pain and distress...
I don't think they'd list the latest rugs, being shut in a stable, or kept in a field on their own...
But maybe I'm wrong.

My father, I suspect, is of the same school of innovative high fashion. Have you seen the T shirts with only one sleeve? You'll be impressed to know that fashion originated with my father, when cows ate the sleeve from his coat, left carelessly over the fence...he wore it for years and his genius has now been copied.

I don't care - I find just it irritating that so many horsey people like to push their ideals onto everyone else!

A bit like when people knock on my door trying to make he change religion!

But has he used the same bit of baler twine for 30 years or does he use different colours depending on what's "in" this season?

[ QUOTE ]
I think they would also tell us that they didn't fancy being ridden today either
smile.gif

Not necessarily. I shout 'walkies?' to my youngsters (just after I've fed them and put piles of hay and haylage for them) and they line up at the gate to work.
