The two lovely GD's on our yard are the YO's companions and the yard guard dogs. They live at the yard, and are always under close supervision.
They are excellent guard dogs, eternally watchful, responsive and very loud!
One of them accidentally knocked me flat by standing up to give me a Great Dane hug - forelegs on shoulders, lean in - and then enthusiastically licked my face! The YO had to come and rescue me! Since both GDs are as tall as me - 5'9" - they go into their day quarters stable when I'm at the yard.

When you have a Dane puppy you really have to give thought to what happens when they're fully grown. We decided that for their own health and the safety of visitors and people we meet that standing on his back legs wasn't acceptable, but he's a standard pet and the only guard dog function is the very loud bass-y bark from inside the house. He has done it, from memory, once - one Christmas he decided champagne smelled really interesting and did a proper "levade" to try and get to the glass my step father was holding. It was hilarious and I do have a photo somewhere.
