Well I thought I would do a little update on my girly after all the well wishes I had after my gutted thread. :)

Eowyn is doing fine in most regards, she now out in the schooling area as I did section some of it off for her and leave Kia in the rest but he kept tormenting her and she was trying to jump out. So I made the space smaller and electrified it and made the tape higher ie the top of the poles (big leccy poles) and he blooming jumped over it to get to her then chased her through the fence wrapping her in it  So he is going to his aunty suzis to spend a few weeks with dezi until her leg heals and she wil just have to make do with ponies on either side of her for a bit.

The leg in itself seems to be healing nicely and quickly is due another bandage change so I have added the pics I took of the last bandage change later then more pics later.

She's not really lame despite only getting one bute a day so fingers crossed her injury heals as well and as soundly as the other one did.

Well pics of the leg

The gunk (non smelly but very goey) :o

I have made the decision after seeing all this gunk to take the bandage off and continue to treat with the cream until day after tomorrow when the cream and the antiB's are due to cease then i plan to let it dry out.

Main reasons are the skin is beginning to crinkle and look stressed and the hair is beginning to fall out and this is what happened before her bandage bow and the skin all dying along the front and back of her cannon and I DONT want to go through this again as Vet said that this is what caused the cellulitus and abcess as all the skin died and infection sets in over a larger surface area.

So here is leg treated and creamed :)

Her bum rubs I have been treating with baby oil and these have come up a treat so once the last scabs have been massaged off with the oil and dont grow back i will slather it in cornucrescine to get the hair to come back.

What do people think of the wound in general???

:)

Ok thanks for the opinions, Im not a troll so you dont need to look but not type lol altho if i was I would probably get more replies :D

Should have said the beast of Bodmin cut her leg LOL :D

what kind of cream is it? my youngster got a cracker from electric wire last year and i used engemycin spray instead of cream and it was brill. think hers was more surface by looks of it tho. picture i have isnt too clear right enuf. hardly noticable now. shame she still kicks thru fences!

Errrrr so glad I don't have to do this I'm no good with guts and gore but I have to say its not looking bad considering the state it was in when she did it!

Flamazine cream with silver sulfide :)

That looks awful! Poor girl. Are you managing to keep the flies out with all that cream? Just interested as my boy cut all round his mouth recently (nothing like what you've gone through there) and I put a thick layer of Sudocream on it and it seemed to keep the flies off and I was concerned it wouldn't!

That looks like its healing quite well - apart from the gunk. What is that stuff ??

I think taking the bandages off is a good call - air getting to wounds always helps them to heal. Its not the same thing - but my horse broke his leg 6 months ago and had terrible pressure sores due to his bandages / splint. The vets had to take all his bandages / support off as they were that bad (which was scarey!) but it did mean that the actual wounds healed quite quickly once air could get to them. One was infected, so keep an eye on that, but antibiotics sorted that out.

Given what a mess it was last week (?) I think that looks really very good indeed. She obviously has very good healing powers.

vet gave me that initilly cos thot yearling would kick my head in with spray but decided to risk it since she trusts me more and it dried it up much more than cream. her top wound is no longer noticable and the bottom (the drain) has a little bit of scarring. i bet ure having fun trawling ebay for boxes of vetwrap!! :)

Hmm might have a look at this spray :)

I think I am done with bandages and as soon as the cream runs out I think i will try spray plaster or something but I did manage to get 12 vet wrap for a tenner including delivery lol!!! Thats stashed for another time (fingers crossed it was a pointless purchase :)).

Her wound the last time was totally different and included bone injury etc so i cant really compare to this one but I dont think there was as much gunk :o

I remember your original post, looks like it is healing really well Hoping it keeps going in the right direction my boy cut his hind leg open badly last September our vets put him on a clinical trial for a new gel designed to be used without bandaging the results have been amazing if you would like any details pm me as you never know you might be able to get on a trail or it might be a treatment avaiable by now.

Alot of people are saying that it will dry/heal better with the bandage off but the vets recommended it bandaged for the next ten days, why dont they recommend air???

Thanks everyone can anyone see anything glaringly wrong apart from the possible fly issues??? :)

Hope it all heals well, just a word of warning about spray plaster - its very 'stingy' so it would really hurt on such an open wound.

Be really careful the leg doesn't blow up without the bandaging to keep the swelling down. That can stretch the wound and encourage it going proud.

You could use a tubigrip taped higher up to the leg with something like melolin or gelnet over the wound with gamgee if there are problems with pressure sores.

I'd personally be wary of leaving if off at this stage.

Good luck with whatever you do!

If it were me, I wouldnt be ready to take the bandages just yet. Although I am a fan of letting fresh air to wounds. I would put less cream on, just to stop it being so moist.

I wouldnt recommend spray plaster. In horses, i think it only serves to trap in infection. Its good for minor scrapes though.

Good luck!

Hmmmm so if I put less cream on it should dry up quicker??? Anyone recommend anything to keep flies out until it scabs??

She is turned out to try to prevent swelling (smallish space as to encorage walking but nothing faster) Is there a secific way of bandageing that anyone knows about to try to prevent bandage bow???

Sorry for all the questions but there are alot of people here with different ideas so might as well utilise them :D Always willing to learn ;) :)

Hi

its good it is moist and draining. Years ago we use to dry wounds up but they learnt that you need moisture for the cells to regenerate themselves in the base layer(ie healing from inside out) We also use to wipe away the gunge with quite strong disinfectants but we were actually removing all the white cells etc/fibrin mesh that was trying to heal it up. We use to have clean gleaming wounds, that took longer to heal, if they ever did!We also got stopped from using spray plaster as well, it can be a pain if you want to put a barrier cream on and agree it does sting as well. It is drying and can crack as well...

Twice a day I would gently clean around the edge of the wound just to remove any gunk that had slid down the rest of the leg(with saline solution and guaze(cotton wool leaves fibres) I had betadine spray(flamzine is v good too usually used for burns) and would spray twice a day..it can make the gunk look bluey tinge) I then did use sudocreme purely as a barrier to stop the flies but did also start using petroleum jelly at the edges as well.

You could get a syringe and gently use a warm saline solution to flush the wound if its really tender and clean the gunk(just dont wipe it off too much).

It looks like it is healing well, if you think its getting infected take the horses temperature but I think it looks better & healing than when you showed us the pics before. Much better.

When it is healed a bit more there is a cream called betnovate that does something magical to help the healing and prevent scarring. Ok, actually it's not magical but it's pretty good and when my horse sliced her leg open a couple of years ago her old breeder told me to ask for that, I did and although the wound scarred the scar is nothing compared to how huge the cut was (10 inches by four inches on her thigh and it's just left a thin line). The only thing is I can't remember exactly when you're supposed to start putting it on. I think we did the bandaging for the full length of time the vet recommended then after a couple of days started betnovate twice a day.
