£150 - I think there are some people who are lucky/ have a good eye with this sort of thing, and you were lucky with the ring you found

I was. 7 pretty big diamonds in a gold signet ring. I seem to be programmed to spot patterns in things and I saw the circle trodden into the mud as I was opening a gate. I did hand it in but it wasn't claimed.

The tie pin is very roughly made. It's either very old, or very amateur. It's great fun to speculate which!

Well this is interesting. This popped into my news feed. The mounting of the stones is exactly this colour and quality.

Tee hee, this gets more fun ...

"At first glance, it is difficult to tell the difference between a cubic zirconia stone and a diamond. However, cubic zirconia is generally less brilliant and reflective than a natural diamond. Under natural light, CZs give off rainbow light dispersions, while diamonds give off white light."
https://www.brilliantearth.com/en-g...t glance, it is,diamonds give off white light.

I have taken it outside and the stones are showing pure white and very brilliant. There also appears to be tiny differences in their size when I put them under a magnifying glass.

I'll be taking it to the jeweller who valued my ring and reset the stones into a new one for me either tomorrow or early next week.

There was a thing on the Antiques Roadshow on Sunday about telling the difference between diamonds and CZ. Diamonds will have very sharp neat edges where the facets meet. CZ will be more rounded. You need one of those magnifying scopes to see that though.
