Ive brought a pony, i knew he was fat but hes is badly lame & overweight, reason for buying as hes very safe, experiences with un safe ponies & knowing this one is the reason we brought, A friend of mine is bringing him to mine end of this week, He does have a nick on his inside leg but nothing sersoius,

My plan is to split my field, i cannot split it anymore & feed him nothing, problem is my grass is extremly rich & with the summer the sugar coming out is not good!

Excercise him loads lunging & country walks ??????
Never used a grazing muzzle before but dont want him to get grumpy with kids because he has one on ie kickiing

My other struggles to keep his weight on so need to try sort something

Prevoius owner said has never managed to get weight off but he has never had lami hes a sec A x shetland

Depending on the cause of the lameness, you may have to make him a smaller pen, or put a muzzle on him because it could be even though you've halved your field it could still be too much for him, and probably get a vet out to him too, if he has even mild laminitis you will need their help, and your farrier's help too. Good luck!

A curly coat is only one sign of cushings. Many horses have it and don't have a curly coat. How do they know it is not laminitis? Has the vet been. If it is not laminitis what is the lameness?

My computer insists on changing cushings to cushiness!

you cannot excersise a lame pony.

I am another one that votes vet check asap, if he has laminitis and you put him on rich grass/do not get it treated properly it could kill him

The prev owner said he dont have lami & isit cushings the main sign is the coat is curly & does not shed normally? If so he has shred normally

Of course they are going to say it doesn't have laminitis or cushings, they are asking you to pay money for a lame, unfit pony they will possibly cost you in vets fees to get sound, if they told you it had either condition, or might have you probably would not be buying it.
I would want a vet before collection and money changing hands, it may have serious laminitis with possible rotation if very lame and more than likely cushings which will mean ongoing treatment to keep under control.

Sorry but I wouldn't trust the word of an owner who's selling a badly lame pony without thorough investigation into the problem. Your taking a big risk but if already committed you need to prepare yourself for worst case and the care involved with treating laminitis.

Even if not laminitis, if he's badly lame you won't be able to exercise him so will need to consider all options for weight loss, you may also need restrict movement until he's sound so will need a stable/very small paddock

hmm, if this is a serious post maybe you need to ask the seller a few more questions about this pony's lameness.
How lame is he? Have you got a stable and some hay? Maybe take him off the grass for a few days and see if his lameness improves

get vet check before you take the pony if it has not arrived.

if it is a severe case of lami then friday may be too late for the pony anyway and if it does have lami then I would suggest with the vet wether you should take the pony on. my advice would be to walk away and i am sure the vet will say the same.

even if it is not lami you need to know what you are getting yourself into with the pony before you take it on

Why have you brought a lame pony?

as others have said, if Lami, then Friday will/could be too late.

You wont get vet, you wont muzzle, you wont 'reduce food', so what advice exactly ARE you expecting here?
To be honest, the only advice I would give, is to get your money back NOW :)

(aside comment to others, half term started?)

Why would you want to buy a lame pony without knowing whats causing the lameness, I would want a vet to look at the pony before agreeing to buy it, the owner is going to say its not laminitis she wants you to buy it.

I am sorry if I come across as being blunt but why are you buying a lame pony off an unscrupulous seller. Poor pony :(

Sorry but why you buying this pony? To me sounds like a walking vet bill due to neglect. Yes neglect as it is cruel to allow a horse to become so overweight

Normally i would of walked away but i know this pony & he has always been the same, i didnt explin correctly he has always been overweight but not seen him in a while & he is now lame, I brought him because i know the owner & i know this pony & know he is safe which is a main thing for my children,
Ive never had a lame pony so thats why im asking advice, i will get onto my vet in the morning

I never said i wont get a vet, i never said i wont get a muzzle & i never said i will reduce food????

he might be lovely but a lame pony isn't much use to your kids? ......Especially if no one actually knows why.. apparently he is lame because he is fat but it isn't lami... Not aware of fatness causing any specific lameneses..

Well if he's overweight and lame my alarm bells would be ringing. Worrying thing is how long been like this could be leading to pedal bone rotation if lami
