I'm too fat. :o I'm a size 22-24, and there's no way any riding school would let me sit on any of their horses. I had a really bad year last year, lots of stress and ate far too much junk.

So this year, I'm going to be working on shifting some of the lard, and getting fitter. I really need to stop snacking so much. (Saying that, today I've been good.)

Anyone else looking to lose some weight this year? What are your exercise plans? I'm a bit limited to what I can do because I have a bad ankle, but I'm going to be aiming for a 15-20 min walk every day for a month, then gradually build up to give my ankle time to adjust. I also have a exercise bike that I'm going to be using.

Sorry, kinda random, whiny post but I was watching some vids of a friend riding and it just hit me hard.

You'll get there! There's nothing like an incentive! Just take it step by step. I've got loads to lose this year. I can't go on growing the way I am! I was thinking of doing Weight watchers online. Some are doing another online diet at the moment (can't remember its name). Good luck!

Don't have an exercise plan as such, but just try and generally move more... so less car, more walking..eg at lunchtime at least 20min brisk walk rather than a sit at my desk, i think walking can be rather under valued.. and planning what is on the menu, rather than day to day shopping, this time of year I like to think of veg soup/broth as being healthy... And less wine!!
Any ideas on how to keep this going would be good though? I think that's the toughest bit... keeping the commitment going.

Come and join our diet club in soap box hun. There are loads and loads of us trying to shift the pounds this year, including me :)

Exercise bike sounds like a good idea. Then you can still watch telly at the same time. I wish I had space for one.

I'm sure you'll get there as you have a goal in mind.

My downfall is the OH lol.... he likes big portions.. he does have a physical job so it doesnt affect him much... for example if we have a pizza he will have a whole 1 to himself so i then have to buy 2 so i get some lol

the supermarkets dont really do nice small pizzas and i have a thing about clearing my plate and because i always put more on it then what i should it goes straight to the belly... will be using a smaller plate so i cant fit as much on there and cutting the wine out also.

I really hope i dont patronise here as so dont want to but hun get in there walk them miles get on a horse and feel the magic of what you have achieved - take every day at a time allow your self some rewards but keep your thoughts of riding in your head - stick photos every where of horses BUT always love you the person you are and hey so so many things you can do with horses whilst losing your weight - look for rescue homes that would love people to help them on day to day - doesnt have to be horses - dogs homes , wildlife sactuaries anything GET IN THERE GIRL and hey keep us up to date :) xxx

I would love to ride again, but I am too busy mucking out the 4 stables, going to feed the other 4 that live out, running the kids around oh and working a very busy job which I am on my feet the whole time. Would love to fit in going to the gym ( I do love it) but I would need another day in the week.

I should be stick thin, I too am a size 22 24 and weigh 17.12 stone, my goal this year is to ride my horse.

if you find away too lose weight please let me know, I only have the time to have one meal a day and I can not eat anymore, I cant eat fat, I have no gall bladder and dont have the time to visit the toliet around thirty times a day if I eat fat.

good luck

see im a size 18 and 17 stone but my riding schools weight limit is 15 stone but they dont mind as i can ride and they just put me on the over 16hh horses but i ride my 16 hand horse everyday well 6 out of 7 and she is fine so i dont no what you weigh but maybe contact your stables and they might help. also riding helps you loose weight ive lost a stone in the last 6 month because i now ride every day not twice a week. (please dont make any hurtful comment about my weight im working on it sensibly and slowly and my horse is find and much happier with me then where she was).

Madeline (sorry so so spelt wrong) good for you - so many "fit ppl" cause thier horses probs from bad position so hey get in there and ride muck out and be around horses - better than any gym . Just do it and yeah ok im a size 8(at best) who struggles to keep weight on (6 st aint good) and look alive so maybe opposite but understand :) just go for it :)

You miss my point I have 8 horses/ponies, I should be so thin with all the stuff I do with them, but I am not ( please no comments I know what I do and can not eat )
My horse is only 14.3, but he is a weight carrier, just because you are big does not mean you can not ride. I have never been thin and never will, I have to live with what I have. If I am fit and healthy then that is what counts.

oo i realise how mine comment could be read wrong but i meant it to be in referance to the original comment and i was suggesting she could try riding sooner then she might think and i quoted you to show how she could be 15 stone but a size 22 or 17 stone and a size 18.

i know how you feel to. when i was at collage last year i mucked out and rode all day and i still only managed to loose a tiny bit of weight. :)

too far from me then. Thats a shame.

My Percheron mare would take you easy and I'm gonna be starting her very soon.

I'm in Hampshire by the way, so if you are ever in the area, let me know.

Thank everyone. I'm not planning on taking lessons just yet. Wouldn't be fair on anyone- the instructor, the horse or myself.

If I can get down to a size 16/18 in a reasonable amount of time, then I'll start thinking about lessons. :)

Thank you so much for your very kind offer. :) I'm sometimes down that way. Might just take you up on it some day. :)

Well done on this attitude - I know it sounds horrible but seeing really heavy people riding - no matter what the horse - makes me cringe. People might be really happy with their size and otherwise healthy but it isn't fair to make a horse carry huge amounts of weight, it can't be good for them. And it's good to see someone doing something about it for the sake of the horse.

Anyway, I'm signed up to the diet thread too so best of luck!

:D Well, knowing my luck, I'd fall off, break something and put the paramedic's backs out when they came to take me to the hospital. :)

I'm signing up to the diet thread now too. Don't have any scales, so will have to go by inches until I can get a set. :)

I was lucky that when I was at my biggest (15 stone, size 22-24) there was a horse (lovely Bob, 16hh 2 ID) that could take me and I had regular lessons. I lost about a stone, but then I got my loan horse.

Having the loan was the incentive to lose it and get fit (also a change of medication, so can't take all the credit) - and over the summer I rode almost every day. I have lost 4 1/2 stone and I'm now a 10 (bottom half - top will always be 14!! ;) ). Mainly, it was simply eating less. Cut right down on the carbs and no snacks, booze, sweeties etc.

Just got to keep it off now! :D

Well done you. :D

Snacking is my biggest problem- I'd rather graze than sit down and eat a meal... but it's so easy not to realize just how much you are eating like that.

This may be of interest to those who have weight problems of any sort. I lost two stones two years ago, purely by accident and it was not a good thing. 5' 6" and size 8 is not good (well not on me anyway!) I have struggled to put the weight back on ,but have found the reason, I am allergic to alliums  I also have a friend who was morbidly obese and had a range of other health problems, she has been found to have a number of food intolerances, she has lost over 6 stones in 2 years and is still loosing weight. She is also aiming to loose weight to ride, which she says helps her to maintain the diet which she has to to avoid the foods she is intolerant of. It may be worth thinking about as it can make such a big difference. The first things she cut out were wheat and dairy, this began the weight loss and led her to go to an allergy centre, where the rest of her intolerances were diagnosed.
Good luck, which ever weight problem you have :)

Walking is great exercise and a good way to loose weight...especially if you have some hilly areas. My OH lost 2 stone in no time by cutting his portion sizes back and walking 3 times a day.

You sound EXACTLY like me. I will PM you I have a very rare condition in humans which most horsey people will know about called cushings. Its a problem with your cortisol levels and causes you to literally gain weight every time you eat, then shifting it is nigh on impossible. If you are being serious about this then please please go to your doctor its the best thing you can ever do - get reffered to a specialist - I think I will go on embarrasing bodies to try to get the condition more well known as well. Other symptoms are irregular times of the month, funny strech marks (more than just from being fat and lengthways down your sides), a hump on the back of the neck and more but you dont need other symptoms. Seriously its usually a small tumor on your pituitary gland or your adrenal gland which they can remove and treat and your life will return to normal and you loose all the weight, or if you are on steroid drugs for a prolonged period of time (prescribed or not oral or intramuscular) it can cause it, very rarley tumors or other anomalies in the body in the lungs etc can cause it too - doctors will dismiss you and you need to push but if you are being truthful you know its not right that you are that big and keep pushing!! Good luck and sorry for the essay, just something im a bit passionate about at the moment :)

I'm having the same issue. Not happy at the mo and not going to get back on my boy until i have lost a stone and a half. I want to lose at least another stone there after and some more eventually.

I'm upping my exercise; walking and dance games :) and cutting out snacks, chocs etc. Going to limit myself to 1200 calories but not going to include fruit, veg and milk in tea and coffee in that.

good luck x

Just popping in as ive been on a huge diet since having my youngest son. I managed to double my weight going from 6 stone to 12 stone (only 5ft 3) and afteR having him I only lost a stone! I was gutted and thought it would come off easily like last time....anyway I'm rambling.
I bought a davina exercise DVD and do that twice a week and not have carbs after lunchtime, snacks also are just fruit. And I have a naughty day on sundays. I found it really hard also as I cook big meals for hubby and the boys and not eating it was torture!
I'm now nine stone and been doing this for 4months so seems to be working!
Good luck!
