I don't think she'll have a foal, I think she'll give birth to a bale of hay!

PMSL I think you could be right I can see her giving birth with her head in the hay

Misst, believe me she isn't in labour yet, ours do a bit more walking first, start sweating then lie down. Once the waters are broken, which is not always as dramatic as you expect then it is all over in about 20 mins. Will have to see how Kossette does it!

when she goes in labour she will be very very restless. almost look colicky. pooring the ground. you will see a white sack hanging out which the foal is in. but that is a while after she starts getting restless. she will eventually lie down to push but you might see the foals front feet hanging out before she lies down.

Oh - see I said I didn't know!!

I would love to witness a birth live though - do you think she will have it tonight or am I waiting around pointlessly again.

theses are the signs to look for in 1st stage labour
The outward signs are, restlessness, sweating of the flanks, as the uterine contractions become more severe, the mare may become very nervous, pacing, walking fence linesor stalls , looking at her flanks, kicking at her abdomen, she may paw the ground, may even get up and down several times to help position the foal.
The end of the first stage is marked by rupture of the allantoic membrane and a sudden release of allantoic fluid. A process that helps lubricate the birth canal. This usually occurs 1-4 hours after the onset of the first stage
delivery of the foal is characterised by very strong contractions of the abdominal and uterine muscles. During this period the mare usually positions herself on her side with her legs fully extended to facilitate voluntary straining that aids her expulsion efforts. She may get up and down several times to help position the foal or may even move around with the foals head and legs protruding

on the website it has a gallery of last years foals being born. so you could watch one of them from last year. there is loads on there

I had to chuckle reading her little "fact file".....
"Kossette is a well built mare, being more substantial than the other 3 trakenhers"
No wonder having seen the way she can eat!

grumpiness does accure throughout pregnacy so i would not go on that but as she enters the 1ststage of labour , the mare usually wants to be left alone if you get what im saying but any of the syptoms on my list above are a very good syptom of labour
