Social life getting in the way of some of it!

Arena hire tmrw to practice a test with Bertie at the venue. We don’t have a full 20x40 school so it’s hard to practice properly at the yard. Have a friend coming to help and read the test. She’s doing a lot of dressage writing so hopefully will have some good tips. I’ve also realised I haven’t looked at the test for ages!

Hack Saturday then visiting friends for a birthday.

Had a pole/jump session on Bertie this week. That was, ahem, entertaining!! First time my regular ins has seen us jump. She knows me really well and seems to have a really good handle on Bertie too. We both started off a bit tense, then I decided not to ride at all, so that was all a bit meh, but then pulled it together, rode him properly without bracing and getting stiff, and it was so much nicer. She said we both had a smile on our faces when we managed to work together ?. I find it much easier to ride a full course. I struggle with doing poles or start/stop jumping ?‍♀️ but our school isn’t big enough to do much. Will do more course hire soon.

It looks like the fields might open this weekend. Really hoping they do so the horses can have turnout on grass. Crossing my fingers that the fields are ready and YO says it's a go. A lot of downed trees had to be removed and fenced mended. It's just so much easier when they're on the field all day.

Otherwise, just schooling, maybe a hack.

Our trainer's daughter competed Maddie at Hunters yesterday. She's taking her out for me at elementary a few times, just to give her a bit more ring practice. It's a slight step down from competing her 17.1 stallion at Hickstead Premier League last week, but she's a lovely girl, and she, along with her mum who is also a good friend, has been so supportive, especially when I hit a really big confidence crisis last year, and a smaller but still significant one earlier this year. She felt Maddie was much improved in the contact after our mini boot camp at AMD last week, so at least I felt I had contributed something towards the day. A couple of mistakes in the first test, but lovely comments from the judge. The second test was a ’clear round’, with no changes added by Maddie who finds them great fun.

We have a lesson on Saturday and I am aiming to work on our first novice test together which we have coming up in a couple of week's time. Sunday will be fairly quiet, Monday we have long arena hire at a local venue, then Tuesday a long awaited clinic with Sara- Jane Lanning at Merrist Wood. I usually see her a few times a year, but all sorts of things mean it's been around 10 months, so I am hoping her beady eyes will give us lots of new stuff to work on.

Hope everyone has a good weekend whatever you are up to!

Dressage on Sunday. Focus just now is on getting some ring experience and trying to get the softness and contact we can get at home. I see wee improvements every time out so I think we just need to get out more. Horse may complain to his union though as this is his second comp this month (and I‘m aiming for at least 2 a month all summer). Poor boy.

Started well, Topaz is home ??? nearly two weeks at the vets and one surgery later!

She’s demanding she be let out to the field immediately here. Luckily the vets have said she can go out as long as it’s dry, so she’s had a few hours out with the others.

If anyone is interested this is what they removed out of what we assumed was a puncture wound as it was tiny ?.

A total of four pieces of wood were removed in the end, toilet roll for size comparison ????‍♀️

I bet! Bet you are v glad you took her in to get it sorted ?

It was one of those what to do moments.

She was super lame with a tiny cut, no reaction to hoof testers, but reactive to the cut. Emergency vet out, antibiotics started immediately and then into the clinic the day after when she was a little bit more comfortable.

No improvement after a few days, so X-rays which were clear but a scan showed a ‘speck’ ???‍♀️. Root about understanding sedation didn’t yield anything, so after more poulticing and more days of pus and another scan, surgery was the only option!

Very relieved it all went well at her age and hopefully we’re all on the mend now ??

I finally got my saddle issue sorted! Almost 2 weeks off work, missed camp, but so worth it as Baby Horse is going very much better in the new saddle.

Only done a couple of hacks so far, but he is really striding out and lifting at the wither. Almost can't believe my luck!

Nothing actually planned as I had my plans come crashing down when it was apparent that the saddle I used had tightened up. But, having a happy horse is ace!

May box out somewhere for a good hack with some cantering about and maybe a little pop.

Good luck to all those competing.

Ooh! Ooh! Ooh! I get to join in with this one!

The new boy is heading out to his first show in many years. I'm not sure I will ever forgive him for what he did to my poor GrayMo but it will be nice to get out with something other than a youngster or funny coloured one!

I need to dig out the Welsh Cobs inhand bridle and steal the full size back of the noseband off of it ?? the throatlash is also full size ?? the lycra suit only just fits as well ??

Good luck to everyone out competing or training. Peglo, what a pretty horse! HufflyPuffly, I hope Topaz continues on her recovery, can't believe the size of the wood pieces! I haven't posted for a while as i've been away but walking up loads of hills on Exmoor has definitely improved my fitness, which is really heartening as i thought I'd peaked at a lower level than I'd really wanted! Anyway, although it's taken over a year I'm feeling a lot more like myself. I changed back to the snaffle bridle for todays session on Mr D as I was finding the double difficult to manage with the damaged tendons in my left hand and I am so glad I did. He went really nicely and I felt I had a much more consistent contact. We've starting introducing half pass and so far so good. OH has got a new battery for the lorry and I'm intending to give it a good clean, get the brakes sorted as they have got a bit stuck on and as soon as it has had it's MOT it's going up for sale. I have done nothing about selling anything else from Rose's equipment but at least it's a start! Have a lovely weekend and I hope the weather is kind.

Well hello, long time no write!

Glad to see you all enjoying the warmer weather (this coming from the apparent depths of Downunder Mud because it just. won't. stop. raining.). I've just spent the last 3 weeks in Germany visiting relatives and having a "holiday". Rode multiple horses every day (thank goodness for lovely German horsey friends who lend me whoever needs exercising!) and enjoyed the beautiful spring colours, sounds and weather! My lot had a holiday in the mean time, which has unfortunately lead to mud fever in two of the three due to the extreme wet. Sooo slowly getting back into riding the ponio and aggressively treating the various ailed legs on the young one in the hope of getting back on her next week.

My lovely Haflinger was replaced with a somewhat Yak-like creature when I came home, so the other day it all came off! Well, most of it. She lives out 24/7 so I left her legs on to provide some protection from whatever the hell this weather is.

clip.JPG

My very first clip doing it myself and she is very impressed, as you can see.

I have entered a dressage competition next weekend but I don't think we'll be ready. I think I may just give it a miss and quietly plug away at bringing her back into work. Hopefully the weather is nice tomorrow so we can review some of our lateral work :)

Have a great weekend all!

Solo pootling Fri and Sat, then doing mounted orienteering for the 1st time ever, run by RC on Sunday, could be interesting!
Huffly, hope scans go ok tomorrow ?
Good luck to those competing and whatever you are doing, have a good time.
To add, as will be before next weekend thread, went nuts last night and entered evening stressage on Weds, have only done one intro back at end of winter, so thought we ought to do an intro and a 1st attempt at a prelim.
B might head scratch as we usually go jumping there ?
Hey ho, after this mornings bright and bouncy hack, I'm thinking I've not done the right thing ?
