well and truly pissed off - i hate relying on people

At 17, it seems to me you should be a little more flexible - I'm 22 and have been driving for 3 years and lucky enough to have had cars.
However, before I passed my test, I would rely on buses and walking - it was a mile and a half walk to the bus stop, bus to 2 miles away from the yard and I would do that journey twice (there and back) although someone would feed at night. I would get up at half 6 to get to the yard at half 8! My parents would give me lifts if I had my mums horses to do too.
As someone suggested, sit down with your stepdad and ASK him, what would be the easiest times, this might make him a bit more compliant with how the lifts are working.
Another idea is finding a cheap bike from somewhere.
I do understand how frustrating it must be - occasionally my parents would ring and tell me they were coming to pick me up (when I used to go to the yard after college) and I HAD to be ready at a certain time, regardless of what I had left to do!

Hmmm!! Thats not true really is it? and you know you only have to message me and depending which site I am working at, I can pick you up no problem as I drive right by your house (and if you are already there, I always give you a lift home, every time) . Try not to get yourself stressed, your guys are both very well looked after by you, and during the winter everybody has the blues at some point, about wishing we had more time, or more daylight etc.

oooh you just never know who is going to read what you have written on open forums :D There you go then, problem solved!
get on and pass your driving test and then you won't need to rely on anyone. good luck

I honestly think you are in a very lucky position to have two horses and lifts up at all.
17 is practically adult - if you cannot arrange getting a bike fixed, the future is not looking great!
Tips/dumps often have bikes, all ours are from there (apart from one I got given when someone felt sorry for me when the saw me on a tiny bike ;) My dad cycled to Barcelona on a bike he bought for £5!
And loads of guys would take a look at your current bike for you I am sure.

I have been cycling miles in the dark everyay and never had any accident, cycled on the snow last christmas when it had got packed down by cars, and sometimes walked to the yard. ( I do not of course reccomend cycling on snow but pony had to get his stocking somehow!) That's life and I can never get over how lucky I am to have ended up with my lovely ponies.
The cycling keeps me fit as well - I am the most unsporty person in my whole year, never been on any teams or anything, we had school xc today and I came 6th out of over 120, everyone was shocked! Have decided it was due to the cycling to the yard.

You also find if you bike to your yard you do not get as cold as you sort out your horses, the cycling gets you really warm :D

so lots of plusses there, all that needs to be done is to get started on living your own life .... :)
