I am treating horse (not me

) to a nice new saddlecloth as I am sick of having 100 cheap and nasty ones and not one nice one.

I am looking for 2 one in black and one in white and i want fleece types.

But what kind looks best. Saddlecloths, numnahs or half pads?
Which one actually works best to keep horse comfy I suppose is the question to ask?
I like the look of the half pads but do they not effect the fit of the saddle, and will horsey not get uncomfy under a saddle with no cloth underneath the bottom half?

So which do you use and why

Have had a few Griffin Nuumeds over the years that last brilliantly and are lovely quality. I use their numnahs. Don't really get on with half pads as you need a separate cloth under or over and I can't cope with the faffing about!

I use nuumed half wool numnahs. I have numnahs rather than saddlecloths because my horse gets really hot under saddlecloths in the summer (and if I'm jumping with a short whip, I tend to whack the cloth instead of the horse!!

Those lemieux ones do look lovely but the times I have seen them in the flesh, some of them had odd lumpy bits in the wool... They didn't seem to be finished to a totally reliable standard

(though I expect if you got a duff one you could probably exchange it). I also have a Mattes platinum half pad which is just so lovely and soft, but rather £££!

The thicker the saddlecloth/numnah/fleecey bit the least likely your saddle will fit and cause it to become narrow and in the long term could cause you problems! That's if your saddle fits correctly in the first place

I use nu-meds high wither range as it fits the saddle better and they also do a lot of different types and colours!

Nothing, or a sheet of grippy stuff.

Numnahs and saddle cloths tend to rub my mare, especially when shes changing coat. I do use her studbook one when we go competing though.

I have griffin nuumed saddle shaped for competing and a square pad for everyday, they are fab last ages and dont bring my sensitive TB up in bumps in his saddle area, he also has a half pad inbetween to make him extra cosy and not cause any soreness!!!

where do you all get your nuumed pads from then?

I cant seem to see them anywhere on the usual suspects (ride away, robinsons, ec)

Another vote for these numnahs - only bought one because a) it was a touch smaller than your average pony size and no1 Little Grey Welshie only has a 14" saddle, most other (cheaper) numnahs are HUGE under it, and b) it was purple which is daughter's current favourite colour. Also it has velcro-on straps which is handy if you forget to thread it through.
It's used in preference to the other 2 we have (they rarely get a look in) and still looks brand new after best part of 6-9 months, was only reflecting on this yesterday when I hung it on the line (washed after each use), so I think well worth the extra cost.

ETA ours came from our local tack shop, Jodhs Galore in Henley

Nuumed for me too

Whatever you put under your saddle, thick or thin, will affect the fitting, so it's best to use as little as possible and make sure the saddle is fitted with it underneath. The sheepskin halfpads do my head in

it's just fashion and no good to the horse

LeMieux half pad and saddle cloth combos they have cut outs to allow for the cloths to properly fit together so they don't slip and you can have a couple of the cloths which stops you needing to clean the sheepskin too often.

In summer we use a special pad which reduces heat can't remember the name (will look when I go down to the yard this evening). I thought it was a gimmick when my OH bought but it really works and is fantastic for warm days.

Since I work for Morpheus you might not be surprised to hear that I use their numnahs

lol. Not, I hasten to add, that its a struggle having yummy numnahs on tap

Although actually mine tend to be the ones where there is a fault in the fabric or we have a colour that we are discontinuing. Got one which has different coloured wool trim at the front than on the back as we were checking out a pattern and just made it out of odds and ends. Looks very odd. Sort of a piebald wooly numnah

Do you think it will catch on?

Nu-umed high wither numnahs or saddle pads and nuumed high wither woollen half pad.

The half pad is used on advice of my saddle fitter, physio and chiropractor, as my hoss has numerous back problems (not from saddles, but needs as much protection as possible).

I found my Nuumed sheepskin saddlecloth on Ebay
It was brand new with tags, still in packaging for £25 and we love it! Tawnys chiropractor highly recommends them too and uses them on her horses FAB FAB FAB!

I only use high wither saddlecloths as anything else I find slips down and puts pressure on my mare's withers. I occasionally use a numnah as the back of the saddlecloth rubs when her coat is changing too.

I have recently bought 2 high wither ones from Roma - you can get them on robinsons and rideaway, they are quite cheap and a very nice fit on a high withered horse.
