What do you think of these hooves?

Sadly, my mare is worse than ever this morning. I'm going to try her in boots, but I think something serious is going on with her right front. Am phoning the vet today.

Good call about the vet. It sounds like there is something definitely going on. Bless her. I hope it can be sorted out for both of your sakes.

I think you need the feet imaging tbh - you need to know whats going on inside them else you're trying to fix it blind :(

Good luck xxx

Vet coming out at the end of the day as they are really busy. Sadly she has now developed pulses, so it's either active laminitis or an abscess. I am gutted if it's the former as she is off the grass totally and on a low sugar high fibre diet. I have a very bad feeling about this. Can't believe that only a week ago she was 'on fire' and feeling better to ride than all of the younger horses on the yard. :(

Oh no! x Poor girl! x Fingers crossed for you both! x

Stay positive and hopefully its an abscess from the first set of shoes, mad to think that we almost hope for an abscess when our horses come lame x

Such a beautiful girl x

Thank you. I think I will get the champagne out if it's an abscess. I Have been crying my eyes out because I know I might have to make a decision for her, but I don't know if I'm strong enough. I cannot begin to describe what this mare means to me. And you look at her and she has such a presence and character that I have never found in any other horse. Much as I love all of my animals, I have always been able to do that final act of kindness for them but it has never ever been as hard as this. :(

Sorry cant concerntrate after seeing the cute dog in the first picture :D
I know, I have two of them. They are like cuddly polarbears.

Not helpful i know!! x

Thank you. I will push for further tests. I have 2 months of insurance left so need to get it sorted soon. If she's sunk though, as the farrier suggested yesterday, it's the end of the line. :(

Sorry to read this Wagtail. Has either your vet or farrier found an abscess? Sometimes they can take a while to surface. I thought one of my horses had broken his front leg, wouldn't bare weight, move or do anything. He actually had an abscess. For any lame horse I always start at the foot and work up. 90% of the time it is generally in the foot and the farrier is my first port of call. Fingers crossed for you - she's a pretty mare.

Vet has been and is not sure. She thinks it probably is lami but she couldn't get a reaction with hoof testers, just like my farrier. She agrees she is too fat (my bad, I had taken my eye off the ball as she was getting so slim and fit being ridden, and then lost the shoe so not ridden). There is the possibility that it's all down to having so much hoof taken off for the imprints and then again for the metal shoes. But most likely low grade lami. She said not to panic. It's not very bad at the moment. To keep her in on two danilon a day and keep the hoof boots on her all day and night for a few days to see if things settle down. If not, do more xrays and test her again for IR (which she was negative for before). Cut down her feed more, leave her rug off whilst she's in (she only has a low chaer clip and the rest of her coat is really thick), and just hope!

Such a worrying time for you Wagtail, I am so very sorry it hasn't started to look better with the shoes coming off.

Lets hope the current plan of action can uncover what needs to be uncovered and that it is treatable.

Thank you _GG_. Even though I have not led my girl out this morning she looks much brighter in her face and seems more comfortable in her stable. So fingers crossed, she will start to improve with box rest. Because she did not have any pulses previous to yesterday morning I had been turning her out, which was probably the wrong thing to do with hindsight.

I've been following this thread but never comment as I have nothing of any intelligence to add :o but I just wanted to say that I have my fingers crossed that it all works out :)

Thank you. I am feeling a lot more optimistic today. I just led her out for a minute and she is loads better than yesterday, in fact much better than she was the first day the shoes went on. She is actually starting to take some half decent strides. I knew by her face she was feeling better before leading her out though. I know this mare so well. So fingers crossed! :)

Sadly my mare is worse today. She has lost weight over the past three days (10 kilos according to the weight tape), but I need to shift a further 40 kilos from her. :( I have ordered the various recommended hoof supplements and Kevin Bacon hoof oil to try. But I am feeling very disheartened today. I have also started her on some acp. I now know it must be laminitis and not hoof soreness. Will arrange more xrays this week and take it from there.

My sister who's a bare foot trimmer has offered to have her at her yard (in exchange for me having her mare that need schooling). She has offered to rehab her and I know she is very good and has saved a couple of others from PTS. Problem is it's a 5 hour journey by trailer, and I know my mare would stress like mad away from me and her familiar surroundings. Plus I can't bear to be parted from her, especially at this time! What if things went badly wrong and my sister had to cope with her being PTS there? I have said I will keep her here, and try to get some more weight off her. She's not fat (you can see her ribs) but she has a bit of a crest and some fat pads. See how she goes and if not getting anywhere in a few weeks send her to my sister.

I'm so sorry that she's gone downhill a bit. :(

If it is laminitis, I hope that you are able to nip it in the bud and that she improves quickly. I wouldn't move her as you don't want her to get stress induced laminitis too.

The bit about the fat pads and crest/ribs makes me wonder about cushings :o

Can you get your sister to come and see you for a weekend and give you a really thorough grounding in what you can do with your facilities and to take look at the foot balance?

Sure you could offer her a meal out or something in recompense? :p

Id skip the kevin bacon oil, pretty sure you sister will say the same, pointless and can cause fungal infections.

If you want to feel like you're doing something id be more tempted by anti inflammatory herbs

No, I know she would stress. When I first bought her, she was manic for months. Then when I moved yards she was the same. The last move here she was fine, but she was moving with her pal and by then she trusted me completely. I've just been and put styrofoam pads in her boots. She looked really grateful, bless her. :)

Yes, she does have cushings but was tested in august and it's under control with prascend. My lovely sister is coming here for a few days very soon and she's going to have a proper look at her and see if there's anything she can do. :)

I dont know much about cushings wagtail, but what I do know is that a lot of hte time 'well controlled' cushings can get that bit worse in autumn due to seasonal hormone changes. Maybe its worth getting another blood test incase you need to increase medication a bit?
