What dog should my friend get?

A border terrier is a great suggestion though I would always recommend an Irish terrier; lovely, fun family dogs but possibly a bit TOO lively for a young child to cope with. They are great fun though...! Whippet - yes!! Staffies are divine, lovely family dogs too.
 
I LOVE staffies. I see they've been mentioned a lot here. There's something about their wiggly bodies and big happy heads.

I know one Irish terrier he is hilarious, if he was a person I imagine him to be an acerbic aul lad propping up a bar somewhere.
 
I don't know anything about scotties except they're adorable. I've a real soft spot for some terrier types I would have considered one myself had I not had my piggies. I hope she goes for one of those 😂

My Irish is a total clown as well as being a really sociable, sweet lad. But yes, the old stereotype of putting 2 coir mats together, stuffing them with batteries and then plugging into the mains is probably about right. :) I hope I always have one.

I must admit - I really love whippets, and seriously considered one two years ago - but when I visited several breeders I found them a bit like this. I’ll continue to admire them for their many positive attributes though and perhaps one day. I think they’re one of the best looking breeds


Miniature poodle or Tibetan terrier would get my vote in this instance I think. Cairns are worth looking into, always very interactive and merry dogs.

I had a whippet as a child, she used to come to sleepovers at friends houses and join in all our games. My daughter has a whippet , who admittedly is a bit of a drama queen if the temperatures drop a bit, but she loves children and will go and seek them out wherever she is. They are very easy dogs in my experience.
 
I'm another going with Whippet
I visted my old history teacher last week and he opted for a Whippet as his first ever dog
He is the most amazing, adorable , beautiful dog and I could have taken him home in an instant. Also concidering he was bought as a 10 week old pup to somebody with little experience, at nearly a year old, he is a lovely mix of good manners and natural young energy. I loved everything about him
 
Whippet and schnauzer are tipping it at the minute. Very different dogs but there's things to like about each. She's going to arrange to meet some of each and then start researching breeders. Thanks everyone for your input it's a very interesting threads and lots I never would have thought of that seem like they'll do the job!
 
I honestly don't know @Clodagh I haven't researched them, just showed her the responses here. Hopefully she'll do a lot of research and decide wisely. Will tell her to look at what they're prone to.

Only ever known one and it was the owner‘s first dog. She was a ditherer and when we went out together, she was pretty horrified at me being very firm with hers, even tho she’d asked for direction with him.

Calcium oxalate urolithiasis, genetically predisposed.

This type of urinary stone can cause life-threatening obstruction of the urinary tract and often needs to be removed through surgery or other techniques. You could be forgiven for thinking that this is a picture of a whippet playing tug.

The reality is much more sinister. The collie has become increasingly concerned for the whippet's wellbeing, what with his constantly depressed expressions. She has taken it upon herself to remove anything dangerous from him. This includes things like knives, over the counter medications, or indeed toys which could work as a noose.

You don't see many of them these days. I assume though that friend could locate a breeder online. Everyone seems to have gone for Westies instead
 
There’s a bloke I sometimes see in the woods who has one. He clocked my ‘I’m only talking to my horse today’ sweatshirt and we had a chat, he has several horses. I’ve only ever known 2 scotties, the other belongs to my sil’s dad. I wonder if they’d be tricky to source.
