At least you now know there’s an issue, so that’s a bonus, but same issue probably also applies to the others if they’ve been grazing together. The microcob got into some crab apples yesterday and has the squits this morning - so I know exactly which pile of poo is hers clearing the field. Chucked this in the barrow to see dead worms. Her FEC was clear 4 weeks ago![]()
She's negative equisal and I think that's more reliable than the FEC. I've just looked at pinworm online and I think too chunky.Pinworm or tapeworm I think
FEC doesn't test for those. Equisal test checks for tapeworm.
That's what Google thinks too.Its a roundworm, also called ascarids - a young mare that moved onto my old yard came with them
ThisMaybe crab apples are an effective anthelmintic - you should publish your discovery and market it as an alternative to ivermectin resistant worms
my teen daughter was mucking out her box and screamed when she saw them! some of them were about 8 inches long! That's what Google thinks too.
Or a rice noodle![]()

Looking at what is coming out of her its been very effective! Although I have just been shopping for drugs for all 3.Maybe crab apples are an effective anthelmintic - you should publish your discovery and market it as an alternative to ivermectin resistant worms
When I bought this place 4 years ago nothing had been wormed. The feral and oldie that were here (both PTS since) were riddled - so I think the and may have a wormy legacy.I just got one of those too! We have bought wormer. She was wormed and then clear, but this land was grazed by others just before us so. Wormer is cheap at least!
My vet says eggs can persist for years and years and years. When I bought this place 4 years ago nothing had been wormed. The feral and oldie that were here (both PTS since) were riddled - so I think the and may have a wormy legacy.
Fascinating about crab apples though. Natural autumn wormer maybe?
I remember that post! I try to take samples from a variety of piles but its a tiny pot so its only ever going to be a tiny sample.Yes, aggregation within the droppings and aggregation in time as worms have egg laying cycles /different times of day. Hence my previous posts suggesting 24h worth of poo and a cement mixer for accuracy![]()
Wow that is interesting.Farmer friend of ours told us they used to give pigs crab apples to worm them![]()
Not just you! I did the same!Oh my I’m a div .. I zoomed in as I thought you’d circled the offending critter.
Interesting, I didn’t know you could visually see encysted worms on a scope! For an actual answer, horse on my yard tested neg on FEC, got scoped for suspected ulcers and had a belly absolutely chock full of encysted worms. I love an FEC but they're not perfect.
