What is THAT?

The microcob got into some crab apples yesterday and has the squits this morning - so I know exactly which pile of poo is hers clearing the field. Chucked this in the barrow to see dead worms. Her FEC was clear 4 weeks ago 😢
At least you now know there’s an issue, so that’s a bonus, but same issue probably also applies to the others if they’ve been grazing together.
Hefty dose of Eqvalan Duo should get a result! Far wider safety margins than stuff like moxidectin, don’t underdose.

Maybe crab apples are an effective anthelmintic - you should publish your discovery and market it as an alternative to ivermectin resistant worms
Looking at what is coming out of her its been very effective! Although I have just been shopping for drugs for all 3.

Annoying though. It's a closed herd and poo picked daily so my vets have them all as low risk. I did think her coat was looking a bit rough but put it down to winter woollies coming through.

I just got one of those too! We have bought wormer. She was wormed and then clear, but this land was grazed by others just before us so 🤷‍♀️. Wormer is cheap at least!

When I bought this place 4 years ago nothing had been wormed. The feral and oldie that were here (both PTS since) were riddled - so I think the and may have a wormy legacy.
Fascinating about crab apples though. Natural autumn wormer maybe?

Looks like roundworm. Amazing the crab apples induced a clearing! My horses are not keen on inhaling the crab apples….the deer pick them all up eventually.

Worms don’t lay eggs constantly so likely why they get missed on FEC. Too many testimonials of clear FEC and worm burdens proves the worms have egg-laying cycles.
The old almanacs always said to worm on full or new moons as the worms are more active. Maybe FEC samples should be taken then too? I’ve not experimented with these timing to know if there’s any truth to it.

My vet says eggs can persist for years and years and years.

And interestingly, that now people worm less (which is generally good) she sees some really funky stuff that never occurred much before. Worms in eyes, people! And obviously things like pinworms that the tests do not pick up, many cases where the eggs hatch in the post so never get counted etc.

Yes, aggregation within the droppings and aggregation in time as worms have egg laying cycles /different times of day. Hence my previous posts suggesting 24h worth of poo and a cement mixer for accuracy 😅
I remember that post! I try to take samples from a variety of piles but its a tiny pot so its only ever going to be a tiny sample.

Just shoved a tube into the hooligan who was horrified and doesnt think NAF blueberry treats are adequate compensation. His right hind hasn't been 100% over the past couple of weeks and it used to play up when he had tapeworm so perhaps he's got a burden too.

Planning how to capture his small friend who has got wind the blueberry treats aren't because her human is feeling nice!

For an actual answer, horse on my yard tested neg on FEC, got scoped for suspected ulcers and had a belly absolutely chock full of encysted worms. I love an FEC but they're not perfect.
Interesting, I didn’t know you could visually see encysted worms on a scope!

Oh my I’m a div .. I zoomed in as I thought you’d circled the offending critter.
🤣🤣 hadn't realised the offending critter was being a circle!

Anyway she's been dosed now and isn't talking to me. She's also ignoring crab apples so perhaps made the connection guzzling little bitter apples made her tummy hurt. I have spotted nibbling her at the conkers which fell and I know they are poisonous in large amounts, but I wonder if something is anti parasitic in them.

Shop said roundworm btw.
