My chap has a blanket clip with a heavyweight stable rug on for when hes in and a medium weight stable rug with lightweight-mw turnout rug on underneath for when hes out.

Do think hes a bit over rugged already, think he has a couple of 'too warm' hours but won't get cold when temperatures drop overnight.

When is it summer?

None, nothing clipped, two in four out.

If it's warm enough for me to sit outside at 9pm with no coat on then it's too warm for them to be rugged

If you want an honest opinion then Id say yes you are over rugging just a tad! Im on dartmoor and despite it being raining, the temp is still about 12 today so my arab is out naked as was she last night too. I might put a lw on her every now and again because Im paranoid about rain scald.

None during the day including my full clipped Sec A, but he was clipped when he was sweltering in the warm days we had in September so has already got a good covering again.

At night - Connie x ISH has medium weight stable rug (but only because he doesn't have anything between that and a summer sheet, sec A has light weight stable rug and Arab x native pony who is always warm has a thin waffle type summer sheet/cooler rug. All were about right when I saw them first thing and it is quite cold (6 degrees at 8am)/damp here today. None of them seemed to notice when I turned them out naked - they are all head down and eating. :)

Ours are unclipped and naked still. Its still very mild during the day and not that cold at night...if you put too much on now what will you do when it actually gets cold?! Having said that I do not know your horse and they all have different needs.

Both out. One unrugged. Other is a wuss in the cold, & grows a long, but fine coat offering little warmth, she's wearing a lw overnight.

Nothing at the moment! Neither of them are clipped and they are enjoying being fluffy :) When it rains/is colder they both wear no fills but when it gets colder they can have warmer rugs on.

I think you are over rugging a bit, just go with what he's telling you - if he's too hot, take it off/put a lighter weight on, if he's too cold, add more :)

He had his second clip on Sunday so i think i put the thicker ones on as i felt a bit bad shaving his fur off!! He has a bald neck and face! might put him into a mw stable rug for night then and a fleece under his turnout rug x
He's prone to losing weight too so dont want him to get cold!!

DOD - Where do you live? Sit outside at 9pm and not have a coat?!!? I had a coat on at 4.30pm last night!! Brrrr!! Think i need to fatten up as i always feel the cold - even inside!! x

Mine are unclipped atm and have got no fill turnouts on in field and lightweights in stable.

They wont have mediums on until they are clipped next week/this weekend.

I'll be keeping my heavyweights for when it drops again

North Cambs - and you're right I do have some padding of my own. Last night my husband, who is by no means of the imagination fat, was outside with me at 9 with no coat!

Nothing yet unless it's pouring and I want to ride. New horse will prob have a lw turnout as she has been used to that. If I'd got her earlier I prob wouldn't have her rugged at all yet. Been very warm here last few day. Cool at night but dry.

Nothing. He is unclipped and is a welsh d so doesn't need anything. We are starting to bring them in at night just to save the waterlogged fields after all that rain, but he doesn't wear anything at night either. If its continual rain then he may have a lightweight turnout on but other than thet he's rarely cold.

Brrr thats mad!! x My mum is a skinny bean and she doesnt feel the cold either but i hate it! Think i was born to live somewhere exotic lol x

The girl in the stable next to me has a unclipped tb with two mw stable rugs on already.

Is there a way of telling if your horse is too hot/cold officially? Feeling him under his rugs he feels fine but everything alive feels warm to me cuz im always sooo cold!! haha....official ways of testing without touching? Termometer up his bum? lol x

Out 24/7, low chaser clip, no fill rug just to keep him dry and clean so I can ride. He really doesn't need a rug, but he gets so filthy and wet, don't have time to wait for him to dry off so I can get him clean enough to tack up. :)

My unclipped TB is out 24/7 wearing a rainsheet if grotty or nothing if nice. He'll be blanket clipped tomorrow and will hopefully be warm enough in a MW.

The others are all unclipped and unrugged. Will only start rugging when they are clipped.

Mine hasn't been clipped yet and is wearing a lightweight with no fill during the day and a light/middleweight stable rug when he's in overnight. He's getting really woolly now but I don't really want to put a heavier rug on until he's been clipped, probably a trace in a few weeks.

My TB is in a rain coat no filling and starting to get wooly on his neck.
He hates the rain and shivers without a rain coat on.
My rule of thumb is at 15degrees then no rug. So I do take his rain coat of midday for a few hours for him to roll and scratch!
He has the run of the yard or his stable at night and he has his rain coat on at night.
I will clip bib and belly in November and put him in med weight.

Mr D is out in a no fill rain sheet today. He is turned out in a paddock on top of a hill with very little shelter.

He has been stabled at night since Sunday and is unrugged in his stable.

The ones that live out are still naked and will be for about another month I'd expect. Stabled horses not yet clipped so they are just in summer sheets at night. I can't bear it when owners over-rug. Horses shouldn't feel hot to the touch under their rugs. Usually when I hear "he's cold" it's total nonsense!

It will all depend on where you live and the individual horses, OP, but using HW rugs already does seem a bit extreme to me.

Our two ISHers are both blanket clipped and the tough mare is just in a LW to keep her clean and dry, my wussy boy on the other hand requires more rugging than any other horse I've ever owned  and he is generally in a MW/200gm at the mo, switching to a lighter one in the day if it's mild.

The other two mares are naked and fluffy, oh and v muddy (both greys).

I just don't understand what people are going to put on if people already have their horses in hws and/or more than one rug!! Its not even lower than 2 on a night time yet here....

Buds is nude in the day and a v lw at night just to keep the real chill off as we are having morning fog atm, by 9 its lovely bright sunshine so gets it off, he isn't yet clipped though/

In all honestly (and i'm not being sarky I want to know) if your horses are in hw rugs in 10+ temps now just because they are clipped what are they going to wear when its snowing and doesn't get above freezing all day?
Surely there is only so many rugs a horse can where before it is frankly uncomfortable!

My two are now in at night with no rugs on, and out in the day with no fills on - mainly because they're in a clay mud field and its a nightmare to get off! I don't want to clip them for at least another fortnight as I hate having to keep doing it and adding rugs - I'd rather the hair grow properly first. Last night the wind was blowing off the moors into the stables and the horses weren't remotely bothered rugless. They're both very good doers though, and never need heavyweights for more than a week or two in Jan/Feb after their second clips if its cold.

Unclipped at mo so out in either a 100g when really horrible or naked. Lightweight stable or fleece depending on temperature at night. Will move into medium weights when clipped in a few weeks x
