The neighbours dog has just killed my cat.

The same dog years ago ran after another of our cats, and then a few weeks later ran into our field and chased my foal. The neighbours apologised and said they would sort him out. Its all been quiet now for a good few years. But tonight theyve knocked on the door to tell me whats happened.

I went into our bottom field and found poor Ronnie.

We got him and his brother Reggie from the RSPCA ( after being rescued from a hoader) after losing our Bob to old age.

I cant wait for another 'accident' . Who do i report this to ?

sorry if not grammatically correct, just too upset to make sernse

Oh Asha,
I’m so sorry, that’s really horrid.
Was their dog out of control and on your land?

yes, there dog was being walked in farmers field opposite, it then got under the wire and through the ditch to get to him. He was in our field with the foals

I suppose it's good of them to tell you, but I would be beyond words mad about that and so upset.

I hope Reggie is OK on his own.

I don't know what you can do to safeguard your foals, you must be so worried about them.

😢

If I’m honest, I’m not sure any authority would actually do anything significant about it other than perhaps pay a visit to the neighbours.

I think I’d be angling (given this is a repeat occurrence) for your neighbours to tornado fence your entire boundary- they would have to be very sorry to stump up that amount though

I'm so sorry what a terrible thing to happen.

It might be worth thinking about what is the ideal outcome you'd like and what would be the best way to get that. The fact the neighbours have owned up to it and told you makes it hopeful they'd be willing to do something and the fact they'd done something that worked for a couple of years is possibly also hopeful? Just be careful that if you report them to the police you do have to live next to them still.

You can report them to the dog warden at the council and also the police. My dog injured my neighbours cat. It was in my garden, so I don’t think I was technically responsible, but I still paid the vet bill as I was mortified.

If they are letting their dog trespass into your land they really should face consequences.

Our local dog warden told us that they can't/ won't deal with dogs in stock fields and to call the police. Sadly I doubt any of them will respond adequately to the death of your cat. The neighbours are absolute *(insert your own word) and should never have allowed the dog off the lead after the first offence.

Reggie still has Burt ( Bobs brother ) , but i imagine hes going to be terribly upset when Ronnie doesnt come home. They are such good friends.

Particularly worried about my foals now as ive just weaned the last one, so currently no bossy grown uo mare in with them, just a 2 & 3 year old.

That's awful and really shocking. I'm so sorry to read this about your Ronnie and I'm not surprised you are so distressed.

I'm not sure what else to suggest beyond report to the dog warden and/or police.

I'm so sorry, also they haven't used to bloody collar properly, surely it should be for training recall, not to be relied on to stop an attack.

I’m so very sorry to hear this, what a horrid thing to happen.

The only good thing is that the neighbours did at least come round to tell you what had happened.

Strike hard while the neighbours are still feeling guilty (that might not last), report it to the police, inform the neighbours of that, and insist that that they fully and properly fence their property so that their dog cannot escape again. No ifs or buts or them wittering on about shock collars.

I’m so sorry, this is awful. Definite report to the police and let them know you’ve done so. I’d also be telling them you have a gun and if you catch it in your livestock fields, you won’t hesitate to use it. They need to keep it muzzled and on a lead, given it isn’t the first time it’s been out of control. *ankers.

How awful. Suggest they buy a bloody leash. I have cats in my garden and whilst annoying, I'd be horrified if someone else's pet got hurt, so on a lead they stay.

I also agree police or dog warden.
