The alternative to keeping in 24/7 is not 'standing in mud'.

Agree with this. The gateway to my paddock is a disaster, but they have plenty of dry ground, hay provided on a large area of concrete, and a shelter with bedding. Turning out does not need to mean that you leave them standing in a quagmire.

We never have deep mud always have grass to nibble on as try very hard to not overgraze. Still on foggage for now but when it runs out will get well spread about hay/haylage. worst patch is where the track goes through a gate for some reason they go round the gate post like barrel racers go round barrels a very tight circle
