There are often questions asking for info on what trailer & vehicle set up is good so I thought a thread that allows members to list their set up and rate it overall out of 10 (10 being excellent) might help.

Perhaps some pics of the set up if poss (blanked out number plates)

Perhaps posting what horses/ponies are being carried in the trailer might also help

The more info the better on the trailer and especially the vehicle as there are many different variations of each vehicle

For anyone with specific questions on the licence & weight legality of their set up then please post those in the HHO TRAILER TOWING CLINIC thank you :)

Defender td5 and Ifor 510. Usually just 1 x 16.3 hh but no problem with 2 horses. Tows 3.5 ton.
Does the job, love it but no luxuries if that's what your after. Had a fourtrak previously and it wasn't as good at towing and I was a little worried at big hills etc but it got us to or destination. It was rather old! Defender is Amazing workhorse designed for the job.

Vauxhall Frontera 2.2 turbo and a 505 ifor that carries my mare on her own without partition as she falls over. It has carried two 15.2s without a problem.

I love my Frontera, it pulls effortlessly and it has had a different trailer with a heavy load on and it dosent complain at all.

Im going to be so upset when it dies, which will be in the next few years
:'(.

Defender 90 Tdi tows with ease :) Takes our rice (I cant remember the model :o) with one or two horses and the horse and all his stuff to uni and back without a struggle. Has also towed an Ifor 510 and an Ifor 505 with 2 horses without trouble. Seen one pull and artic out of a muddy gate way before :D.

The trailer is nothing fancy but does the job and has a solid partition so can put all ponys stuff the other side when moving to uni and back (tied down) and gives him a nice smooth ride.

LWB Trooper and a Wessex Olympian with one or two big hunters, both fab - the Wessex gives a much smoother ride than my old Ifor and is slightly bigger too and the trooper is great - lots of room and tows easily - the radio is a bit rubbish since we broke the aerial though  :p

ets it's a 3.1 LWB Isuzu Trooper 53 plate and the trailer is about 6 months old.

110 Defender 2010 commercial model - five seats, huge space in back for my stuff and where there are no windows unlike the station wagon, bit more secure and out of sight. I have also put on a roof rack for taking my camping stuff when staying away at shows. Diesel 2.4 engine so lots of pull and not too bad on fuel. Being a Defender, don't have to worry about mud etc inside which I would with a Discovery as it easily cleans out.

Trailer is the Bateson Deuville which takes our 16.3 clydesdale and 14.3 gypsy cob very comfortably. The Bateson is really easy to move by hand and gives the horses a good ride.

I give it 10 out of 10 as very stable, easy to drive and I love my landys. The new Defender is like driving a car, the old Series IIIs I used to have were a bit more effort.

Forgot - 10/10 for defender and 7/10 for dihatsu fourtrak. I think scorings will also depend on what people have towed with at other times to compare? Or they msy have nothing to compare against?

Not sure of the scoring really, butwe have a Daihatsu 4trak -commercial version (L reg too, and still works like a trooper) so has no back seats, towing an ifor 506.

Love the 506, but now looking for a more luxurious towing vehicle as my dad also has a citroen picasso and needs something that combines the space and seating of that, with towing capacity, plus the ability to fold the seats down totally flat so he can put his bikes in the back (he won't use a rack, they are far too precious...!)

I have an 05 Kia Sorento automatic which tows my Ifor Williams 510, i tow a 16.2 tank like gelding & a 15 dainty mare.

I really rate the Kia would score it 10/10, effortless towing, comfy drive with lots of extras.

The Ifor 510 is solid & sturdy & great on show days with just the gelding in, i take out the partitions & put in my breast & breech bar which then allows for loads of room inside to tack up / shelter from the rain etc, 9/10

Jeep grand Cherokee 4lyr petrol can tow 3500kgs

Wessex Olympian takes two 17.2hh all galvanised steel and padded partitions

I rate them both an 8 only cause jeep is thirsty and in an ideal world I'd have my horse travel backwards or herringbone

I used to tow with an P reg Defender but now tow with an 04 Nissan Patrol. 3.0l Diesel. Auto.

Trailer is HB505 to take one 15.3 horse. I do not honestly think the 505 can take 2 16.2's as it says it can!! Well, they would be squeezed in like a pair of sardines! It could take two 15hh'ers.

Rating: 9/10 loses a point for wide turning circle - but I guess they all have that being a LWB. Can't really fault it any other way. Fuel consumption average for a proper 4x4, comfortable to tow etc.

Jeep Cherokee 2.8 CRD Sport Automatic and an Ifor Williams 510 - usually with one 17.1 Dutch Warmblood in it but quite often with either a 15h Welsh or another 16.2 Hannoverian.
Jeep will tow 3500kgs - but pulls effortlessly and with it being automatic in my opinion it makes for a smoother ride for the horses. Only had it since October but so much better than the 6.6 ton lorry financially, so for me 10/10

I have a Range Rover Sport - Brilliant towing car. Can't tell you have anything on the back. Tow 16.1 Heavy Friesian and 16.3 WB. I'd give it a 10 for comfort, but 8 for diesel/cost value. Thankfully we have the warranty on it, and when it runs out we always get the extended (that extra £700 a year is worth every penny!) They do often go wrong, but I live with that.

My trailer is a 2004 wessex clubman, i love the style and all the little extra's. I think they give a lovely smooth ride aswell. I personally want the bigger Olympic version now as my mare is too cosy in there, however, I still rate it a 10 because I love the make.

I tow my 16'1 suffolk x in an ifor 403 with my OH's merc c180 saloon car.

For my purposes its a 10/10, no extra expense to run the trailer and I haven't had to buy a towing car. Just have to keep OH's car nice and clean when I use it.

Now sold but I had and highly rate bateson ascots would say 10/10 if you wanted a simple 2 horse trailer , the best trailer would be an american style goose neck, safer and bigger than a bumper pull I would have one tomorow and sell the lorry, aparenty equitrek are working on one , if they get it right it will revolutionise horse transport.....

Toyota Landcruiser Colorado and an Iffor Williams 510.

The Toyota is FANTASTIC, tows really well, comfortable on long motorway journeys, loads of space for feed, shavings dogs etc and has the extra seats in the boot so can take 7 people.

IW 510 easy to tow, very light and loads of room for big horses.
I have used it for both ponies and big horses and its great.

I would give them a 10 out of 10. :D

Ford Ranger and Ifor Williams 505 with 14.2 and 15hh in it ( combined weight of horses is around 1000kg!)
10/10 for towing however manoeuvring is not the easiest as Ranger has a rubbish turning circle!

Another one here with a Kia Sorento, anf a Ifor 505... tows great.. 10 out of 10

Used to tow with a mercedes Vito, same trailer, again 10 out of 10

And have used a Dodge Ram (huge pick up) worst thing Ive towed with.. 3/10

I tow an iwt 505 with a ford maverick, have had 2 Shetlands in there up to 2 16.2's and it's been brilliant would rate it 10/10.

I love the trailer as the doors are nice and easy to open/close it's light and airy, and the car is comfortable and has been very reliable. Is for a 4wd fairly economical and lovely to drive.

Trailer a IF 510 used mainly for going hunting ( have lorry for the rest )
Great trailers I have had three work horse although the new ones look very smart. Mark 9 out of 10 loses the mark for the jockey door you can't shut or open from the inside and the lack of a lower place than the horse tie point to tie the hay net and the head guard which I hate and never use.
Also have an equitrek carriage treks three axles huge trailer not had it long or used it for the horse yet not sure the horse area is thought though but tows well for a monster. But does not look as though it will take the work the IW does.
So mark a qualified 7 out of 10.
I tow with a defender 90 TD5 amazing vehicle tows out of anything works hard been very reliable I had from new(12years) a star worth every penny I spent.
9.5 out of ten losses the .5. For it slow to heat up heater and it's ride quality the door that drop and let in cold wind and rain.
And a Range Rover 4.2 supercharged very thirsty but not much difference between cost towing to driving due to the lower towing speed amazing car to drive a long way so my choice for long journeys fabulously comfortable easy to drive but you have to watch your speed as its power makes it easier to go to fast and petrols don't slow so well verses diesels when you take your foot off. Mark 8.5 out of 10 for towing 9.5 for driving losses the . 5 for the MPG.

Thanks for the replies and please keep them coming

There are lots of 4x4 vehicles mentioned but does anyone have cars or perhaps vans that they tow with?

I tow my Indespension Monarch with a Hyundai Terracan. Works well for me :)

I like the car, really easy to drive and I love my trailer. I'll give it a 9/10 as in an ideal world it would all be a bit posher!

Just got a Kia Sorento (04) XS, which is super comfortable, specifically for the job of towing my Bateson Ascot. Love both it and the trailer (I really rate the Boston barn doors on the back and the ease of use), plus I get about 35 mpg combined out of the Kia, so not too thirsty. I can now confidently tow both my 16.2hhs and don't feel worried in the slightest - the Kia tows brilliantly and smoothly. 10/10 for both.
