Hi all
I have a 3yo Tb x Bavarian filly, and I need to find something else to feed her. I changed her feed at the beginning of September, after I posted this thread about her:

http://www.horseandhound.co.uk/forums/sh...&PHPSESSID=

She's now on HF GrazeOn, HF Allen and Page Sugar and Cereal Intolerance Mix, but hates it, and isn't looking so good on it either (not underweight, just dull). She also gets about 1/4 scoop of Speedibeet.
So feed suggestions, please?

I have to say I find mine have always sparkle on Barley rings, sugar beat and for extra fizz some rolled oats.

I don't go for mixes, I do use HiFi to bulk up the feed a little but no much.

I would be wary of the Barley rings, they can send some horses loopy and alot of horses have an intolerance to barely. My mare being one of them. Personally I would go for a chop, and add some oil for calories and condition..

Looking at the nutritional values of what you're feeding her you could change to Alfa A Oil and D&H unmollassed sugarbeet. You get the same protein levels as her current diet with oils added. The sugarbeet is just flaked sugar-extracted beet so not over processed.

This is what my tbx sec D is on and she looks fab and is very glossy and correct weight. seems to taste good too I think.

What about Spillers Response slow release cubes...no cereals- just fibre and oil, with some chaff and speedibeet.....mine are fed that - varying amounts...they are a nice weight, nice and shiny with plenty of energy but not demented...i dont feed cereals ever, I just dont like them...its a bit like feeding kids blue smarties or diabetics sugarcubes IMO, too much of a 'sugar rush'.....

Is it just the sugar and cereal intolerance mix that she dislikes? If so, could you cut that out and up the amounts of Graze On and Speedibeet? If you are feeding the mix for the vitamin and mineral content then you could add a vit/min supplement. Are there any other specific ingredients that you are trying to avoid, as well as cereals? Has she ever shown signs of reacting to oil at all?

PF/Orange Empire - The Allen & Page stuff she doesn't like seems to be alfalfa and pulses, so I'm reluctant to buy more alfalfa for her (plus my old mare hates alfalfa, so it's easier for me to avoid it, and try to feed them the same if possible).

Poppymoo - That sounds promising; she has liked Spillers feeds in the past, I'll investigate.

Bounty - what is D & H ERS short for? And how much are the Topspec cubes? She could do with a vit/min supplement, but I don't know which ones aren't cereal based.

TGM - yes, she hates the A & P mix (well I have to persuade her to eat it

). She has never had oil. She seems fine with the sugar beet, and GrazeOn, and likes them.

TGM recommended the Spillers slow release cubes to me on here....and I have to say they seem really good, been really pleased with the results so far and thats only after a couple of weeks

Are they completely cereal free? I have tried looking at the Spillers website, but can't see ingredients listed anywhere? (I could just be dim, of course

[/ QUOTE ] Alfafa is a little bitter, so if a horse is a bit fussy they may dislike it.

what is D & H ERS short for?

[/ QUOTE ] Dodson & Horrell ERS Pellets (designed for horses with equine rhabdomyolysis syndrome, so cereal free)

[/ QUOTE ] If she was mine then I would be cutting the mix and upping the amounts of GrazeOn and Speedibeet to make up for it. I might consider adding a little oil of some sort if she still seems a bit 'dull'. I would tend to stick to straight single ingredient feeds at this point, rather than looking at mixes and cubes, just because there are so many ingredients in the mixes and cubes it will be difficult to pinpoint if she is allergic to any of them. However, if you decide her problem is solely linked to cereals, then it is definitely worth looking at the cereal-free compound feeds suggested above.

I would up the Graze On and Speedi Beet (as she seems to like them and they aren't upsetting her system), but I would try her on NAF Pink Powder. Everything I have fed it to has really bloomed and it would ensure she got her vit & mins, plus it is PINK!!!

TGM - I may give her some linseed oil as I already have a bottle. I feel she could do with vits/mins or similar, but she is in slightly better than good condition weight wise.
Poppymoo - I'm glad it's not just me!

Sparklyone - Is NAF pink powder not cereal based, then?

I'll will have to double check the ingredients (won't be till Monday though as on shift till then, so not up the yard). Sparks does fab on it though and she's intollerant to loads of things!!!

O.K. just googled the ingredients -

Wheatfeed, Orange Peel, Saccharomyces cerevisiae (live strain-1026), Copper Sulphate, Sodium Chloride, Calcium Iodate, Manganous Oxide, Di-Calcium Phosphate, Magnesium Oxide, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Pryidoxine, Cobalamin.

Hmmm guess the Wheatfeed may rule it out for you, but hasn't affected Sparks.

Devil, you're good!
I'm not sure about the wheatfeed...I have narrowed down her range of allergens to the Equivite Vit/Min supplement she was on (wheatfeed based, I think?), her D & H Leisure mix, or biting flies.
She has been so much better since I changed her feed...but then, there are fewer flies too.
I am confused.

i would feed http://www.primeroequine.com/ fabulous stuff mine are all on it, they are showjumpers and dressage horses, brood mares and stallions, all have good weight, energy, condition and have brilliant healthy coats that my vet is always commenting on. Also i dont have a fizzy horse anymore NO naughty boys or spritly youngsters, just happy horses
grin.gif

also you could try http://www.simplesystem.co.uk/ also very good, i feed this as well when i need extra go or extra fat (not that i do!!) but their stuff is yummy.

i feed 1 round scoop of Primero twice daily (even to my big boy) and when they need alot of energy they get a bucket of soaked Grass's, alfa and Unmallased beet pulp from simple systems.

if you need any help you can PM me as im very happy to advise - i have done months/years research in this kind of feeding

I have a lumpy bumpy horse that sounds the same as yours, I spoke to Simple Systems and they recommended trying green tea in the feed as it is supposed to be a natural antihistamine. So now he has Chamomile tea before shows to calm him and will being having green tea for his bumps - I am going to try him on it next week.

He also says he wants a copy of The Times and a pot of Earl Grey for breakfast......

I would be feeding her
alfa a oil (or if she won't eat it then hifi senior even though she is 3 it's higher calorie that hi fi original),
with full fat soya (or equi-jewel or outshine but they're more expensive).
with speedi-beet (as much as she will eat!)
and a complete vit and min supplement (eg NAF general purpose)

plus as much hay/ haylage as she will eat.

my sisters horse is reallyy fussy and doesn't like nuts or cubes or mixes with lots of pellets in, but he'll eat this like there's no tomorrow. and if i don't mix it properly he'll eat all the full fat soya first!

PM me if you want more info.

what do you want to feed her fow weight/ condition etc. does she have lammi or anything like that how big is she what does she do?

[/ QUOTE ]

She's 15.3hh or thereabouts.
She does nothing at the moment, except dispense chav attitude (she's only 3yo).
I want to feed her for maintenance, but it has to be cereal free, and she appears to hate alfalfa.
She has erythema multiforme (an allergy to protein, most likely, although the vets aren't sure).
She's not thin
