Hi all, last week benny was a pillark and semi impaled (well more of a gash with a slight puncture) himself on something! Being a baby, unused to pain and a poof, he went berserk when I tried to hibiscrub it so I hosed it off and puffed it with wound powder and made sure he had fly repellent on. I did this for 2 more days, by which time the wound had healed over, I checked it today and upon pressing it a moderate amount of puss oozed out  he was really good and let me 'milk' it out, I then re-hosed, re-fly sprayed and got out the spare sachets of antibiotics that I have (well within date) and gave him a dose with his tea. I want to poultice tomorrow, but what do you think, I don't have bran on stash (neither does anyone at the yard) and I don't have any ready brought ones (I have everything but in my vet box!!!!) Any gem home made recipes from you lot or should i just go and buy one, I will poultice and then add some antibacterial cream.

Before anyone asks it is not on a joint than god and it is draining down, I am quite positive it will be ok without vet visit, since I have a full course of antibiotics and he is vaccinated against Tetanus, I just want some poulticing suggestions please, and vibes for my poof baby boy :D:D

Well i always buy animalintex but if you want a home remedy i know you can make a bread poultice although i havnt tried it.

cheers TF, I'm not overly worried about WHAT I use, just that TBH i have been really lucky in the fact that I truly can't remember the last time I ever had to poultice, never in the last 10 years with ebony, so probably not for at least 16yrs!!!!! I think in the depths of my garage in what used to be my old vet box I may have some animalintex, does anyone know if it has a shelf life, I wouldn't have thought so???!!!

If he were mine Id leave off the poultice and dont let it scab over quite yet, try and clean the wound as often as possible to ensure that the wound heals from the inside out. Even if its just cleaning with cotton wool and water if he still thinks the Hibiscrub really hurts but he may be over the initial sensitivity of it now but on the other hand you also dont want to clean too much and clean all of the new flesh out. Good luck!

Dont think animalintex would have a shelf life, cant say iv looked to be honest. Id wash th wound of with salt water and if clean then think about poulticing, where is the wound, is it in an easy enough place to poultice?
Hope it heals well.

Fair point, the majority of it has scabbed leaving a bit that must have burst about .25cm or less of a diameter where it is draining, the initial injury is about 1inch across :(, you are right perhaps since the flesh is not raw he will not be sensitive now, but would it not be better to poultice the wound to ensure that all the yuck is out first, then continue with just cleaning?

I sure as hell do not want anything to get trapped inside!

Easy enough to poultice, it is on the inside of the front leg half way up the radius bone, I have bandages and/ or vet wrap etc so should be a sinch. Please understand I am not by any means a novice, but he is my baby and I am a tad overreactive, plus I am quite lucky in that generally, my babies don't get hurt!

I would poultice with animalintex. I've unfortunately had too much experience of poulticing and find the other ones crap in comparison.

Damn, why didn't I think of pads when I was struggling to find nappies small enough for my donkey. Thanks for that for future reference bb.

Ets nappies small enough to use as a poultice, I wasn't trying to keep the donkey tidy round the place :D

Animalintex for me. I've seen people use nappies but, based on some of what I've seen, they can draw a wound too strongly & encourage proud flesh. Animalintex secured with vetwrap every time.

Grated Soap and Sugar and a drop or two of hot water. Mix together add the water to a soft paste apply to wound and cover.

PLease don't use Hibiscrub on open wouonds, that is not what it is for - it is to sterilise surgeons hands prior to surgery. Does not work well on broken skin

Make up some saline and store in sterilised drinks bottle. Boil water, allow to cool and add 1 teaspoon salt to one pint of water. Flush wounds with this - far kinder and cleans safely.

Strong disinfectants can damage the skin and prevent it from healing properly.

Active Manuka honey is great for healing wounds, slather on thickly and leave.
