Whats price did you pay for your horses?

Payed £200 for a 12.1 welsh x newforest gelding this april as a rising 3 year old unhandled when I went to see him the lady had to put rope round his neck till he stood still to let her put a headcollar on. now 7 months on I broke him in in been on 2 fun rides been to one show hacks out alone and in company, goes through heavy traffic, sheep, tractors, big lorries, horse boxes, nothing bothers him. £200 was a bargain for my little man. Although he's not so small anymore as he's currently stood at 13.1 :)

8k for my 4 year old as a 3 year old and 15k for my now 9 year old when she was a 3 year old.

Out of interest, what did you get for that amount of money?

I presume very talented and very well bred - what are they doing now?

Its nice to see all sorts of stories. I was always under the impression that anything under 2000 was going to have illness, lame, behaviour problems. All the horror story stuff but it looks like there are some genuiene people out there who yes sell their horse cheap but are honest about the animal. I think its harder to buy horse than to buy a car.

I'm currently looking for a horse and I just can't make up my mind!!

My new horse, a 17.1hh 13yo extremely well bred WB, I got for free. He was saved from being put to sleep (longish story but totally unecessary). Only had him a month but so far he's a really lovely gentleman on the ground and to ride so am very pleased with him (taking him to BSJA tomorrow so hopefully it goes well!). Would never normally take on an 'older' horse but the opportunity arose. I've been told he sold for £25k as a youngster so I assume he was destined for big things but due to no fault of his own, things didnt pan out. Really sad to look at him and think such a super horse was going to be killed.

Otherwise, I paid £2,500 for my grey (now retired due to injury :( ), who is a Luso x TB and was a green 5yo when I bought him. Turned into a little superstar for me so was worth every penny. My 2 retired very first ponies cost my parents £1k (probably quite a lot for 20 years ago) for my 13.2hh Highland x Welsh (was a 5yo) and £100 for his 3yo shetland companion at the time which I think was quite pricey too!

Most I've ever paid for a horse was £4,500 and he was the only one I shouldn't have bought...! Otherwise, bought quite a few project ponies for £500 so bargains to be had if you can be bothered to put the work in.

Why would you assume this? There are plenty of cheap genuine ones out there, i know of several off the top of my head. I guess it also depends where you are in the UK.

Paid £875 for my first pacer (didn't know she was a pacer at the time), 14'2hh black mare. Total nutjob, wonderful temperament on the ground, could do anything with her grooming wise (all the children used to practice plaiting on her at PC). Unpredictable and hotheaded when ridden, but a challenge all the same and when it was good it was really good!

Old man paid £2500 for Playmate, expecting her to be in foal and she wasn't so quite an expensive purchase, 15'1hh broodmare.

We bred Star so I guess she cost the £400 stud fee?!

Daisy has just cost us an arm and a leg (in my opinion) at £3200, currently standing about 14'2hh, yearling pacer, will hopefully race next year in all the big 2yo races.

The honest answer to the question would be: my sanity and my social life!

I have a very horsey friend who does it all by the book. So naturally any time the subject of me looking at a horse comes up she starts going on about what problems they could have, people who are dishonest and the whole thing.. bla bla bla its rather annoying really because she fails to mention a girl we know who has a lovely 16yr old that does anything and everything.

I can't wait to get trying out, I'm still saving but looking. ITS TOO TEMPTING TO LOOK! :D

Over the years I have paid
1,100 for a 14.2 12 yr old probably PBA mare - this is about 1992 - including tack - she had hardly been ridden because she was too hot for the child who owned her but she was bombproof in traffic - no idea of her history at all she had no competition record but passed 3 stage vetting (no one was brave enough to canter her!) she turned out to be perfect for me, did a bit of everything, was very trainable and a pleasure to ride - kept her till she died (of colic) but she was fit until that day and was still hacking out with gusto at 27.

Horse 2 - a 15.2 6 yr old grey gelding very well bred by the starrock stud - Lippi x anglo Arab. Got him for 3000 inc tack in about 2000. I thought this was a lot of money for him as I got him from someone who had only had him 4 months and who had become very scared of him, he had no competition record prior to that. We still have him in the family he is my father's ride now. He has also been a gem of a horse he was very trainable (the most intelligent horse i think I ever had) late to mature but a fab long distance and dressage horse (he jumped too but I never did much with him just small clear rounds for fun) with a lovely willing happy attitude. Now he carries my 75 year old father round Epping forest and has been worth every penny we ever spent on him. :)

Horse 3. I paid 2000 for a multiprize winning 15hh National Show Horse 6yr old mare about 4 yrs ago- also bought from someone who found her hard to handle. But she did have a great showing in hand record and a lovely kind sensitive nature. I had her for 6 months and enjoyed every moment of the time training her but sadly she developed very bad kissing spines (vet said she probably just 'grew into it' and became dangerous to ride and I decided not to go for invasive surgery for a horse that was upset by regular vets visits.

Horse 4 - I had on loan - a 14.2 PBA palomino - so I paid nothing for him. I think he was advertised for 3,000 but I thought this was a lot for a horse who was fairly green on the flat and flat out didn't jump. when I said he was a lot of money I was offered him on loan and took that offer. He was very nice and did eventually get round to jumping.

Horse 5. A colored middle weight 15hh mare of unknown breeding 7yr old - green but kind. Done a bit of showing. I have only had her 3 weeks so hard to know how she will turn out, but so far all good - totally excellent in traffic, hacks alone very trainable on the flat. Very headshy but getting better (must have been hit at some point). I paid 2,750 for her including tack (Though saddle I got with her had broken tree and bridle was cobbled together from the junk they had on the tack room floor and only half fitted - so its all been replaced) I think this was a lot of money for the mare to be honest - but if she is as nice as she seems and we get along and she is fun to school, good in traffic and willing and kind as she seems to be then she will be worth every penny.

Horse 6 - 17.2 TB gelding - hunted and raced, had been pin fired - I paid 2,000 without tack - even the vet who vetted him said I was paying a lot for him and could get similar cheaper (he is my Husband's horse) - he did turn out to have some issues - he was a head shaker and was in very poor condition and spent the first 6 months we had him more lame than sound - despite passing a vetting. BUT he is also a lovely personality who is nice to handle - even for titchy little me, he is genuine in traffic hacks alone and in company - is forward but not crazy. Knows enough to do a bit in the school, is safe enough I don't worry about my Husband but lively enough to command my Husbands respect and bring out the best in him as a rider. SO again though pricy for a horse with issues he now healthy, sound and providing us with lots of riding fun!

A horsey work colleague asked me what I wanted to pay when I was looking for a horse recently and told me I would only get crap for less than 4,000 - but actually I have never even looked at anything over 3,000. I think one persons crap is another person's treasure. But then I am not very competitive so I don't need good breeding or great potential. All of my horses have had the scope to jump a 2,6 course, do a novice / elementary dressage test, hack out nicely and have fun on to win rosettes at local shows and That's as much as I want and is easy I think to get at that kind of price....

so OP have fun looking!!!

Out of interest, what did you get for that amount of money?

I presume very talented and very well bred - what are they doing now?

The 9 year old is very tallented, jumps over 1.50 with ease! She isnt the easiest ride nor the most confident horse so has competed up to fox. I am jumping lower stuff now and putting her in foal next year. She is by Harlequin Du Carel and out of davitt star. She came over from ireland

The 4 year old is by Lord Z and out of a mare called alecia d'or (sp?) by pik solo

He moves lovely and very scopey. I started him out and hes had a break. He is starting work next week ready for blue chip quals. I am for fox + with him. I got him from belgium

I buy them young so you can never know exactly what you are going to get bar breeding and potential at the time. They are always unbroken or just sat on a couple of times

Toffee= Free, she was on full loan to me and her owner gave up horses so said shes yours :)

Samba= £850 at market with colt at foot. Sold colt for £300ish. 2 years of hard work I have a nice pony. Probably shouldn't have bought her but I wanted a project and my god was she, there was a reason she was in that market. Don't regret it though.

For my old boy I paid £2500 8 years ago when he was 11. Best £2.5K I have ever spent and we have had loads of fun. At 19 he is still good fun, sound and very, very happy.

For Mini TX's mare I paid £12,000 as a just 6 year old who had been red and produced by an excellent producer of young horses and ridden to PN level by a 4* rider, with some very good results and not overcooked either. I have no regrets and she has taken my daughter to the PC Nationals a few times, Novice eventing, and will hopefully go Intermediate and 1* next year. A lot of dosh yes, but a lovely, lovely mare.

I like a challenge, so i get the ones nobody else wants! lol, but in the process i dont spend hardly any money, just time, patience, common sense, a no nonsense attitude, oh and a bit of swearing thrown in when i get clobbered lol :D

My mare i had on loan and had major trust issues and was very nervous when i first knew her. It started off as a loan then a permanent loan then she was gifted to me and i owned her until she passed.
she was a 14.3hh 12 year old cob

My TB was free, he bucked, kicked, bit, reared, napped and was a general pig in every aspect. Hes now my reasonably well behaved showjumper
15.3hh, TB (raced till he was 9/10) and i got him when he was 11

My pony was £1, uncatchable for three years, had a lot of trust issues, incredibly headshy and was great at chucking people off and throwing herself on the floor. good job i love her ;)

could i ask a huge favour :D if there is anyone who knows a bit about pricing horses would it be possible if i could pm you with details of my horse and ask for a rough estimation of her value? i have been asked to sell her but have no idea what she is worth it would be very much appreciated!!!

I think I got a bargain paid £25k for an unbroken 7yo. Very talented and will hopefully do PN one day.

Mine was: £800-
14.2hh Highland
Knew nothing and was trained from scratch! Now out doing small SJ comps every weekend, hacks alone/in company, goes anywhere/does anything and is a very safe little pony.

Mine was: £250 (including delivery) -
14.2hh New Forest
Did nothing, including lead so a completely, blank slate but my baby girl.

Previous owner payed £6,500 then she came to me 9 years later for about half that Because I bought her in her mid teens. Bargain for me as I got a very sound, (touch wood) talented, proven horse who has/is teaching me me so much:D I couldn't

Typo im hoping??

This thread is giving me hope that I can one day get back to show jumping without spending all my money!!

My 14hh then 8yo mare was 3k, looking back now she was a bargain! Was a bit crazy but had done a lot and was the most genuine pony you could find!

15hh 12 yo dales cross mare, beautiful and jet black:) had only been a hacking horse and now she does everything!! i paid £2000 about 8 month ago for her, best money i ever spent;)

£800
4 year old Welsh Bay 13.2 (now 14hh and 5)
Only ever hacked out before i got her
Very genuine and kind pony
Came with nothing but a bridle

21 year old £1300 12 years ago

At the same time got our old pony who we lost two years ago £1200

Both with tack but from dealer so really didn't fit.

Idiot pony £3000 with tack after loaning him for a year for my brother. He wasn't worth it in terms of been there done that but in what he gave my brother who has a neuro condition he was worth every penny.

The WB £1100, yes expensive for a project but she has come along well.

The racer £600 loan fee from the TRC and if we ever can't afford him he goes back.

The little pony we were given.

£1000 in 2003 for a ID x TB filly foal, still with us now and my dream horse and will show, jump and do workers.

£1000 for tb mare 10 yrs old when purchased, sold as a potential broodmare and needing very experienced rider, couldnt stand still, jogged and ran everywhere with rider on, ended up doing BSJA with my sister and now is a happy hack on the buckle end. Beautiful mare.

£150 for a 2 yr old tb filly, by Kings Theatre now backed and broken and working really really well, am told she will make an excellent show hack but the plan is to event her. She is a bag though when she wants to be she can be pretty nasty.

Love them all.

As a child we paid £680 for a 7 year old blagdon cob, best pony ever, had to sell him when we went to uni, did everything, sold for £1500.

£5 and a packet of Malborough Lights ;)

My gorgeous 17hh olenburg ramiro (sire) and weltmeyer (dam) lines reason being she had negative roatation of the pedal bone and they wanted shot of her. little did they know she'd be the superstar she is today - With a decent farrier and brilliant vets i havent had a days lame with her and she is comfortabily schooling to novice level and jumping up to 1m without issues.

Handy was £900, he was a 13 yr old ex racer, hadn't been retrained properly and was 'dangerous!' No mileage in terms of competition, he'd been turned out for a few months. Didn't come with anything (except passport, headcollar and leadrope.).

5k for unregistered 4 year old connemara, he is the most perfect pony and hes 8 now, wouldnt part with him for anything, best money ive ever spent!
:D

Bought a 7yr Dutch WB gelding for £7000 from one dealer didn't get on with it so swapped with a 10yr old Belgian WB gelding from another dealer.

Absolutely adored him from the day I got him, great to box, catch, shoe, tie-up no real vices, easy to handle, lovable and cheeky, well bred (Major de la Cour), gorgeous looking, talented, has done a bit of everything and worth every penny to me. Has since had an SI injury but we manage that and he is the apple of my eye. Totally worth every penny :)
