When it rains, it pours

She is most likely allowed to leave tomorrow!! I’m trying not to be too excited because we all know horses can throw a spanner in the works, but I’m so relieved. I’ve spoken to the relevant people and she is going back to the rehab yard and they’re changing her onto soft chip

Arabi will eat all his hay and every scrap of clean straw given the chance 🤣

Hence why he never has a straw bed.
Old Horse, who has massive hay nets when he comes in from 0730-1530 on good grazing and has two big chaff/balancer/grass nuts/linseed feeds a day, still furtles through his deep straw bed. When I raised this with YO, she said he was prospecting for corn.
So far (fingers, toes, hooves and paws crossed), he's been OK.

Alot of horses are fine to eat straw I've bedded a few of mine on it in the past with no trouble, it's just with Arabi he would eat most of his bed every night as well as ad lib hay 😂

She has been discharged and had a lovely bit of time on grass and then had a sloppy mash. IMG_1772.jpeg
Annoyingly she didn’t travel back well and has apparently done a bit of damage to the woman’s box. Don’t know how had it is yet but hopefully won’t be too expensive - this mare has already cost me so much the last few months.

Thank you everyone for your messages and support over the last few days. I honestly really appreciate it ❤️

Well that was unhelpful of her. I hope she stops presenting you with bills soon!
.

Just FYI, I had a horse who had regular colics and a vet at Leahurst vet hospital who treated him advised me to provide water in a bucket not one of those auto drinkers. Some horses drink more from a bucket and it can lessen the risk of impaction.

🤞 she can finish her rehab without a further incident.
Bon dunks his hay, so even if he has an auto drinker I like to do him a bucket too

Since mine had compaction colic I always try and provide a bucket of water on the yard at night even though they have a large self filling trough...

Oh yes, definitely. Something I’m going to speak to the rehab yard about today. I’m obviously happy to lend them her water bucket from home. I’m just feeling very guilty about being an annoying client (anxiety is a tricky beast)!

I had a cry last night about all the bills she’s given me over the last few months. Still got my excess to pay on the kissing spine diagnosis and just dreading this week’s livery bill as fully expecting added costs for transporting to and from the vets and the damage to the box. I also need to buy another repeat prescription and more regumate. Please, Nova, no more bills 🥲

Try not to think about that. It absolutely never makes sense 😂. I’m pleased she’s on the mend. Hopefully that’s it for the stress now.

iI you've got a decent credit rating, would getting a 0% credit card and paying it all off over a year or so soften the blow?
Without getting too much into my financials, I already have a credit card that I balance transferred for 0% for 2 years but it’s only 0% on purchases until April. Not sure whether opening another 0% purchase credit card would be a good idea? Considering my mum was an accountant, I’m not very good with this kind of thing!

Would you otherwise be paying more interest on a loan / overdraft or earning more interest on savings? If so, it's worth considering IF you can afford to repay it all before the 0% runs out AND you trust yourself not to spend on it. Or could you transfer it to your existing card? Some only let you do it when you open the account, some will let you add to it.

No more news since this morning and they close their phone lines at 12 on Saturdays and I didn’t want to clog up the emergency line. I guess no news is good news but I genuinely feel sick thinking about it.

I’ll talk to the vet about what they think is best but I do agree with you, Michen, that the rehab is better equipped.

I am also stressing about how expensive this is all going to be. An emergency call out for our last colic episode cost £280 and that was just a sedative and pain killer and off he went. I am really hoping that my insurance will pay for this, but she has “gastric ulcers and related conditions” as an exclusion. I know impaction colic isn’t related to ulcers (which she doesn’t even have!) but I also know insurance companies will do all they can to not pay out. I also know that the cost of all this should be the last thing on my mind but I currently have an unpaid vet bill and at least 3 more weeks at rehab livery to pay for!
Mine had "gastric ulcers and related conditions" excluded on the insurance but they did pay out for impaction colic so hopefully it will be the same for you.

Thank you for letting me know!!

I’ll have a look at my balance transfer and see if it will allow me to add to it. I’ll have to do some research into the best/cheapest option. I’d not even thought about considering a small loan.

Sending hugs.. I know it’s overwhelming. Positive thoughts that a year from now you’ll be enjoying her and it’ll also seem a distant memory. Someone said to me when I was drowning under Boggle bills, you can make more money but not another Bog. It helped me to think of it that way :)

This is a very good way to look at it. As much as she’s made me cry the past few months, she’s my main priority. Thank you - I hope Bog is doing okay. I haven’t checked in to your thread recently.

Surely the transporter is insured for this kind of thing?
