When would you expect livery yards to reopen

Thanks for all the replies, it's been interesting to hear other points of view.

I'm still no further on from before. We don't live in England so still don't have any idea on when lockdown will be reduced.

I spoke to my yard owner and he said that does not agree with the reduction in lockdown and that this just means that the NHS can cope with more people, rather than life being safer. I know he does not want me to come to the yard, and he isn't giving me an idea of when will be ok.

I've got an appointment tomorrow morning to look round another yard. It has amazing facilities, but is twice the price.

My current yard owner is a friend but I can't go on not knowing what the plan is. He seems happy to just leave things the way they are and is kind of making me feel like the selfish one for wanting to see the horses. To be honest now if he offered to lift some restrictions I'm not actually sure I would feel welcome, more like I'm in the way. It will be hard to leave though if that is what I decide to do.

I would guess that they are enjoying having the place to themselves without any liveries coming in each day, there really is no justification for such a small yard, similar to mine, with owners who are not in the high risk group, stopping you going in each day to exercise, yourself and your horse, as long as you can access observing distancing guidelines, have a place to wash hands and can keep your things away from theirs I think they are taking liberties charging you for livery and refusing you access, you may not be in England but the rest of the UK does allow riding/ exercise/ animal care.

Currently your.paying to have a horse but have no access or input that makes it expensive add to that you don't feel welcomed so what's the point in staying?

Ive opened our yard to social distancing again. We’ve only a small yard anyway. (we weren’t closed, just doing slots)

It all makes me feel a bit nervous. Our local area has one of the highest current rates and they think it’s because certain communities haven’t isolated as well (large families and households and lots still working). I can’t help thinking we will go backwards. Somerford would be the last place I’d go. I’ve seen hundreds of people on Facebook arranging to go!

OP, I’m sorry to say this, but if I were you I’d be moving. Sounds like your current livery owner won’t really change. Horses are expensive, and not feeling welcome will impact on your enjoyment. Good luck whatever you do.

It’s nerve wracking though. This is my first day of having no time slots at my yard and one livery is already forgetting to put gloves on or keep social distancing. Not deliberately, but because she’s chatty and gets carried away!

Gloves are not that helpful unless you change them a lot and if you touch your face with gloves on then it makes no difference.

And just tell her to back off, remember you are outside as well so droplets dissipate

What the BHS say is very important to accredited coaches and those who would like to have lessons with an accredited coach.

It is also important to those on approved yards. Plus many smaller yards will look to the BHS for guidance in difficult times.

The BHS is not a legislator, they can only comment on government legislation. There is a massive public misunderstanding of the power the BHS and other trade bodies actually have (or more like don’t have).

Business and premise owners must be led by and adhere to government issued statements and legislation. Trade bodies will certainly have useful comment and guidance, but they do not write law.
